Which games compete with Skyrim?

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 12:12 am

bethesda will be 2 for 3 for me if skyrim turns out good which im expecting from what im reading. oblivion was an above average game at best and i had to mod the hell out of it to make it playable. the game that will most likely beat it for me is either Deus Ex Human Resources (if, and i mean if, eidos montreal doesnt [censored] it up like they have done with other franchises) because Deus Ex is far and away my favorite RPG ever. STALKER 2 could be my new favorite game of all time if they doubled the size of STALKER CoP and fill in the world a little bit more and add back the underground areas that were super creepy from the original STALKER. that games isnt coming out until 2012 though to it wont impact sales.

also..........minecraft already has hundreds of trillions of people who have bought the beta already and are putting up with updates that break games and mods have to be constantly updated, but we still play it religiously............that speaks volumes about that game.

In fact if dark souls is realy 200% better than what i expect from it its going to be slightly better than what i expect of Skyrim. Demon's souls was an excelent game wich has the potential to build a franchise just as big as the elder scrolls and on top of that they decided to make dark even more for hardcoe gamers and to make it open world.

Dark souls looks pretty good but two things will keep me from it. It appears to be both 3rd person only and console exclusive.
I have my doubts about the openness of it's world as well. I have my eye on everything and though many hopefuls have come to pass since Morrowind, such as M&M, TW's and many others not one of them compares to a Bethesda open world. The only competition TES has is Fallout.

Main contender...Mass Effect 3. The Mass Effect series is absolutely brilliant and will most likely be the main contender for skyrim

Biased poll is biased.

Skyrim will be an okay game. I doubt it'll live up to Daggerfall and Morrowind, and comparing it with other genres is difficult - although generally, I'd say there would still be better games if you compared (entertaining) play time / total amount of fun.

Vega strike and fallout are the only games that have an open world like TES, outside of TES. (That I can recall)

So they don't really have any real competition, there aren't other games like TES.

Now my opinion on how Skyrim will be? I think i'll be disappointed, but that doesn't mean it won't be great (like oblivion, a disappointment, but still great)

Skyrim is the only game I'm really hyped about. Haven't got the newest DA yet because I'm not willing to pay that much, yet I'm waiting for the CE before I preorder Skyrim. My gaming has always been fairly limited, and I think I've come to the conclusion that I only really like open world RPGs, and there aren't many of those on the 360 that I know of, or am interested in.

I don't think Skyrim really has competition. It is my core game, it's what I play. There is nothing else like an Elder Scrolls title. That being said there are still a few games on my radar: Brink, Portal 2, SSX Deadly Decents, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Mass Effect 3, etc.

They will all be good, and well worth the money and investment of time. They'll be fun and enriching. But Elder Scrolls games will always have that extra bit of magic.

What is the point of a poll like this on a SKYRIM forum?

I storngly believe Dark Souls be will an equal with Skyrim, on the consoles obviously. I voted at the second option hence. I consider myself a TES fanatic even though Oblivion was the first game I ever played of TES and I didn't like Morrowind.
My rating of Skyrim, OB, DS and Dark Souls:

Oblivion: 94/100
Demon's Souls: 90/100
Skyrim: 96/100
Dark Souls: 92/100

The way I see it, the only ways Skyrim will not be the best game of 2011 are:

- It gets delayed 'till 2012
- Al Lowe remarkably gets back to the Leisure Suit Larry franchise and finally creates the sequel to Leisure Suit Larry 7: Love for Sail
- Planescape: Torment sequel ( )
- The second half of Skyrim's main quest will be going through dozens of mandatory ABSOLUTELY IDENTICAL dungeons, down to the last monster, which was fun the first three times, but after a while your very soul is getting emotionally abused by the level of sheer redundancy making you want to hit your head on the desk and punch the developers in the face. (Yeah, I'm talking about Oblivion). You soon start having nightmares in which you build a time machine so you can go back and stop that madness taking place, either by killing yourself in the past - no use killing yourself in the present, the level of profanity that exited your month is sure to bar you from any afterlife - or by stopping the creation of the entire series. Come to think of it, maybe that's why Planescape: Torment doesn't have a sequel. The one made was so bad that somebody escaped the space-time continuum in order to make it dispensary from TIME.
- Psychonauts sequel

I think that many games will seem like equals, but Skyrim will prove better in length due to the amazing replay-value it is sure to have. IMO at least.

Best RPG of the year would be a tussle with Mass Effect 3, can't say who wins untill we get info on Mass Effect.

Game of the year (This will probably be the order IMO)
(Winner) Portal 2
The Last Guardian
ESV Skyrim
L.A. Noire
Mass Effect 3
Deus Ex HR
Gears of War 3
Uncharted 3
Battlefield 3
Resistance 3
Call of Duty MW3
Batman AC

It's the year of the 3s

The only really good game I can see (IMO) this year would be if Ubisoft announce an Assassin's Creed 3. But Skyrim will still beat that easily.

love how people keep mentioning ME3..

ME1 was somewhat comparible to oblivion.

ME2 was a corridor shooter and nothing more.

so yeah... im a bit 'meh' when it comes to ME3.

Dragon Age 2 is designed for imbeciles and it's an insult to RPG fans, so it's out. Witcher 2 looks promising, but the first one wasn't exactly earth shattering, plus they still don't have a console publisher, so its sales will be much lower than Skyrim which is multiplatform. If BioWare doesn't mess up Mass Effect 3 like Dragon Age 2, I believe it will be the only RPG to compete with Skyrim in terms of sales and fan reaction. And maybe DX: Human Revolution.

As far as rpg games go there will be none better than Skyrim, not even close.

There will be other games that are going to be pretty epic too though. Like portal 2 (coming out in a few days ooh) and battlefield 3. Crysis 2 is a good game too i think, haven't played it yet cause i don't have a pc yet lol.

I see many folks here have not heard of The Witcher series

The Witcher 2 Assassins of Kings is Skyrim's competition this year.

Skyrim will also compete with Mass Effect 3

Fifa 12, LOL...

More serious... I just see one game compete somehow (Gameplay, UI, Fun, Combat style, Quests, Characters charisma, etc, will be key points...) with Skyrim (RPG, Open World, SP) :

The Witcher 2 Assassins of Kings (and if combat style is better than The Witcher 1)

But The Witcher is from a small European Studio and only for PC... So, will be a great game with small sales, unfortunately, because I love RPG's and the people who make them (btw, BGS, You have my eternal gratitude for all the fun hours I play TES I, II, III and IV)

TES will not be outdone by any of these games. the game i give the second most respect to would be mass effect. but TES wills till be better adn give u more freedom then mass effect and allkinds of different stories. it willhave dragons bliotch...nuff said. but on a 10 point grading scale. mass effect is like a 90... Skyrim will be the nerd student who got bonus points. skyrims a 105
