Which merchant has the most caps?

Got plenty of stuff to sell. Which merchant has the most caps, and where? Don't feel like waiting 3-4 days for merchants to restock their stuff.

I couldn't really tell you. Fallout 3 isn't like Oblivion where each merchant has their own amount of money -- the amount they have depends on how much they buy and sell... but I assume you already know that.

I always recall Chief Gustavo of Tenpenny Tower having a fair amount of caps to spare, so try him. He probably has the biggest ammo supply, too, for you to stock up on.

I don't know how much you know about the game or merchants so I'm going to tell you a lot assuming you know less since your question is pretty basic.

If you invest in the caravaners they will have a lot more caps on hand. So ya, it costs you money to make money, but it's nice. The only other thing I can recommend is to sell to everyone with caps. Make the rounds to everyone in the RC Marketplace, go out to Tenpenny Tower and sell to everyone there, go to see Tulip in Underworld and if Sydney is in business sell to her as well, etc.

If you don't know about investing in the caravaners here's a link to the wiki article which talks about investing with Uncle Roe:

http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Merchant_empire

You go to Canterbury Commons and talk to Uncle Roe and can give him 200 and then 500 caps per caravaner and then they carry more caps and can repair your stuff to a higher level. There's a chart on the wiki page that tells you what their caps go up to and their repair skills, etc based on what you invest.

The big problem with this is that the caravaners can die. To help prevent this I only trade with them in Rivet City. They only get attacked if you are in the cell with them. They have routes and if you follow them around then they are more susceptible. Arefu is especially dangerous for them. I also, if I ran in to them out in the Wastes would fast travel away from them. It's also not a bad idea to RPP better equipment onto them. I would put lower DR stuff on them as early in the game as I could get it and PA when I could get hold of that. Only stuff in good repair so they were well protected.

Invest fully in the trade caravans, that'll boost them up to having 500-1200 caps when you see them.

:vaultboy: you need to upgrade the traveling merchants and i see someone explained how to do that, but also you need to establish the merchants, rivet city has lots of merchants, there's the doctor, the hotel, the bar, flak n shrapnel, seagraves, bannonthe clothing guy, and a quick fix, thats 8 merchants in rivet city, tenpenny tower has plenty of wealthy merchants, they usually have 500 caps each, once you get sydney back to underworld after the stealing independance quest underworld has 2 good ammo merchants and the doctor. megaton has lots of merchants, they don't have a lot of caps but they do have some caps, there is a doctor there, moira brown, gob, the brass lantern and also leo stahl after you tell him you know he has a drug habit he will sell you drugs and he has some caps, you just have to make your rounds, but once you uppgrade the traveling merchants especially wolfgang and lucky hairt they each have thousands of caps, once you're leveled up also, they have close to 10,000 caps usually. there's more merchants even, you can upgrade the paradise falls guy who own lock n load, he has 4 or 5 hundred caps usually, plus the doctor there has a couple hundred caps, smiling jack at evergreen mills, the citadel has an ammo and weapon merchant, she usaually has 4 or 5 hundred caps, you just need to establish merchants.

:fallout:
the first 200 upgrades them a little bit, but if you fully upgrade them, their repair skill goes up even more and they will have a lot of caps all the time and more stuff. i upgrade all of them once i have enough caps. another thing about the traveling merchants, later on in the game they get killed easily, there is a few ways to minimize or prevent that completely, this is what i do, three main steps.

1 - this is the way that makes sure you always have them around, make a couple saves with wolfgang and lucky hairth in the save every so often, i usually do this at megaton or rovet city. check the locations every so often and if they don't show up, you need to reload the save with them in it, now this might seem like a hassle but it can be if you don't have recent saves with lucky or wolfgang in them, but the next two steps will make sure they stay alive.

2 - put tesla armor on the guards and give them gatling lasers and heavy incinerators, i also give heavy duty weapons to the merchants themselves, usually chinese assault rifles, or tri beam lasers, or plasma rifles, however don't give lucky armor or else his repair skill goes down a little bit, i just put the armor on the caravan guards

3 - this last tip is important and it works pretty good, avoid certain locations and areas that the caravan guards might be at because if you're in the same area or cell as them, they might get attacked by deathclaws or albino scorpions, here's a few of the locations i really try to avoid
:nerd:
near temple of the union
near canterbury commons
evergreen mills
arefu

those are prob 4 of the worst locations to be at often because the caravan is usually near those areas and those are areas with lots of enemies

safer areas to meet the caravan guards are
megaton
rivet city
agathas house

thats about it and if you do all that, you'll always have them around.
here is one more tip in case you do go to canterbury commons a lot and want to protect that town better, because it does come under attack a lot later in the game.
i give the mayor, and the machettes, the guy and gal who roam around the entrance of the town, all gatling lasers and heavy incinerators.
also i buy RL-3 from the robot guy and fire him and he goes to canterbury commons right where the caravan merchants are, and if you have broken steel RL-3 is indestructable pretty much so he might help oiut if an enemy comes into the town.

You mean give it to them and not sell it right? I think it's too late for Wolfgang.I haven't seen him in a long time.

Yes, if you sell it to them it goes into their "store" inventory, which is different from their personal inventory. It's a bit funny the way the code is written, because it's almost like the merchants don't have access to their own merchandise.

Anyway, to get them to actually wear the armor or use the weapons you have to pickpocket them, but instead of stealing from them you put the gear into their inventory. Just don't try to give them grenades...

I'd recommend going to Rivet City and walking around to the different merchants. You'll find the most merchants in one spot there. They're likely to have a lot of caps between them and if they run out buy ammo which you'll eventually need anyway.

Well, since this is also the "Cheats" forum, you can also increase the life expectancies of merchants by increasing their hit points. I generally dislike cheating, but I dislike losing the merchants even more. Go into the console and click the merchant/guard/brahmin (you'll see their info at the top of the screen), I believe the correct command is "setav health nnnn" where "nnnn" is the number of hit points. 5000 is a nice number...

If you already lost one and want him back, you can use the console to resurrect him. I only did that once, after finding Doc Hoff's body near Rivet City (by that super mutant camp near the Jefferson Memorial).

One reason I loot differently in Fallout 3 compared to Oblivion, is the way the merchants are set up. I use a Bag of Holding mod and take just about everything when I play Oblivion, because the vendors have a neverending supply of gold and I can sell it all; in Fallout 3, I take what I need - to use for whatever it can be useful for, or weightless items with value to sell - and leave the rest. Sometimes I'll come back for stuff later, but usually only because I have a need for something that was overabundant when I first got it.

If you wanna keep the merchants around, forget increasing their health; just make them essential and then, they *can't* die.

The easy way, is to click on each one in the console, type "gbo" to get their base object, and then type:

setessential 1
(replace with the actual base ID from the gbo command, for example, click the player and type gbo, you get 00000007, so you'd type setessential 7 1 to set the player as essential)

I've never tried investing in the Caravans, but I tend to sell most of my junk to the merchants of Tenpenny Tower. They all seem to have a good amount of caps.

I would say either Flak or the chick that runs the Resteraunt in Megaton. But, if you sold items to all the people in the Marketplace in Rivet City, you'll easily get around 1,000 Caps.

once you're leveled and you've invested in wolfgand and lucky hairth, they each will have over 10,000 caps, and my tips on how to not lose the caravan merchants is for console users, my method assures me of having the caravan merchants around, just avoiding areas they are at a lot, like near temple of the union or arefu etc will keep them from getting killed, the area in between temple of the union and canterbury commons not far from the freeway is a bad spot for losing the merchants, i've seen em get killed there lots of times, either by deathclaws, giant scorpions or the enclave, thats the worst spot i think, the traveling merchants are always traveling through there on their way to canterbury commons, also that spot at evergreen mills when you're leaving the area on the railroad tracks, thats a bad spot to be also, if i do decide to go to those spots to fight enemies, i make sure i have a couple saves with wolfgang and lucky hairith since those are my favorite merchants, that way just in case something happens to em i can just reload the save. the reason its so important for me not to lose them is lucky and wolfgang have the highest repair skill and i like using the gauss rifle and that needs a merhcnats to repair, for the most part, not counting alien epoxy.
