No matter how much I love playing with a ton of mods, I'd always recommend playing vanilla at least once, that way you'll work out which mods you'll find most useful

Yeah, I'm a mod munching monster, but I always play my first game vanilla to see what I want to mod.

Exactly. I quickly figured out that I wanted Darn's UI mod and Arwen's Realism Tweaks which I also used in FO3, but I'd never add all sorts of mods to the game before having played it at least for a bit.

I tend to start vanilla and then mod stuff out that annoys me immediately.

DarnUI was downloaded after around 3 minutes of my first playthrough, no way I'm going through the whole game with that UI. I modded a certain dog to look slightly less stupid, I got rid of Veronica's silly hat, stopped Lily from constantly yelling about how quiet she is, added the More Where That Came From music, fixed the distant gunfire bug, etc. That sort of thing can't wait for the second play.

Definitely steer clear of game mechanic changers the first time through though.

Thank you everybody for help,
I will pick only mods that will make game more fun and less annoying.

Just one more quick question if i will install : Community Bug Fix Compilation Patch,MTUI,Companion Sandbox Mode and radio stations. Will it somehow affect achievments on steam or hardcoe mod achievment?

Still on first play through. Using these:

# This file is used by Fallout NV to keep track of your downloaded content.
# Please do not modify this file.
ClassicPack.esm
DarNifiedUINV.esp
FalloutNV.esm
RadioNewVegas_Balancing.esp

What is your opinion on additonal perks, lvl cap raiser, perk every level, skill booster and mods like that? Should I install them during first playthrough?

Definitely not, fixes are fine, like the Free Radical perk is broken so you can mod that so that it works like it is supposed to, but don't add stuff that makes you more powerful, the game is far from challenging. Even at Very Hard/hardcoe it's pretty tame.

Perk every level just makes you unkillable, it's not in any way enjoyable unless you are just messing around to see what stuff does.

Ok, but if I would want to complete most of the game (most side quests) I assume I would hit lvl cap quicker than i would like. Which mods are ok that would raise the cap (in best case if enemies would level with me) and maybe some extra perks?

In general, I stick with fixes (community compilation bug patch) and UI fixes (Darn's).

Then I start adding in minor tweaks like randomization of unique loot or basic balance mods. But only after playing for at least a dozen or two dozen hours in the base game until you get a feel for how DT works in New Vegas. I save the more advanced mods for future plays.

(Particularly if you have a large screen and play on a large resolution), fix your UI. Use DARN or the other mod that I sadly forget that will make the font smaller and the game less annoying that way.

Look at the community compilation patch. You don't have to install the whole mod: so far, I haven't ran in to any bugs or annoyances with it so I'd say 'why not', but everyone's different. If you're spoiler phobic, I recommend just taking the whole thing... if you're not, then read up on the patches and mods included in it, and install what you feel you're need. Using Veronica? You'll want the fix for her leveling and for her quest. So on, so forth.

At that point, I'd start playing.

Then, add what you think you need. You mentioned perks and leveling- play first, and see how you're doing. Do you really, really, really want more perks? Then add the perk every level (although as said it does make the game much easier) and the various more perk packs. Do you find hardcoe too tame? Add a mod that ups the requirements. Are you annoyed with how guns work? Look at the various 'realism' mods for that. Want armor more worthwhile? Check Arwen's realism tweaks. Do you think you need MOAR FOLLOWERS? Grab a multi-follower mod. Find yourself leveling too fast? Then look at the cap removers, but only after giving it a spin.

You certainly don't have to complete your playthrough, or even play that long. After even an hour of play, you'll probably have an idea of what you want.

If you are worried about hitting level cap then use a mod that increases the amount of XP you need to level. However it kinda sounds a lot like your just fishing for justification for using "god mode" mods, if that's the case I'm not sure why you started the thread, almost everyone is going to tell you that you should play vanilla or make it harder on your first play through. Making it easier than it is already is just robbing yourself of any kind of challenge or satisfaction.

Well if I wanted to be God I wouldnt like to make enemies harder with each of my levels :) (as I mentioned before if its possible for enemies to scale to my level if I would raise lvl cap). But ok you convinced me I will only add more music and bug fixes.

As most everyone has said, 1st playthrough I always play vanilla.

With 1 exception.

DarnUI is a must IMHO, even for the 1st playthrough.
Vanilla UI is Horrible!

The rest of the mods go after the 1st playthrough though.

Agreed that first playthrough should be vanilla except for a few mods. And I feel compelled to give the incredible http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34902 mod some love. I know everyone loves DarNUI and that's great but MTUI is a much, much more vanilla UI that simply makes things way less annoying instead of radically altering things. So I recommend MTUI for a first playthrough.

I recommend playing the game in pure vanilla for an hour or so. Then add some mods. What I add are:

MTUI
Better Binoculars
Eyes-2_1
Community Bug Patch
Radio Vegas Extender with More Where that Came From (customized by me to remove some LQ and annoying songs)
NVMM to install mods
Hacked d3d9.dll of course...

And I might add URWLNV after playing 10 hours or so...then you can decide if you like the new bright look or not.

i honestly tried playing vanilla only on my first run. but with the game experience i had with a mod bursting FO3 i simply couldnt do it. i couldnt handle the ugly UI, the bullet sponge enemies, effortlessly having a lot of money, and generally not getting enough of a challenge from the game. among other mods, i blame my use of ART for it, really.

It got to the point where it bothered me too much that i simply cant go on playing till a more complete version of ART comes out. If Arwen comes back that is. :(

Ooh the man himself. If Brumbek says it, you can bank on it. I'm still a touch leery on that d3d9.dll though. I've read quite a bit about it, including the thread the original author posted in, but I'm still not convinced we know all that it does. I have half a notion that it's causing some performance loss in some interiors (I could very well be wrong though).
