Which mods should I add?

Post » Tue May 03, 2011 2:05 am

I've never played Oblivion before, so I'd like to know which mods would make the experience twice as epic as I imagine it'll be. I bought the GOTY Edition, so any mods dependent on the expansions are okay to suggest. I like to play beast type characters, but I'm not too fond of the Khajiit and I would never willingly play a Half-Orc, so some race mods would be great. Having said that, feel free to suggest anything else that you enjoy and think makes the game even more awesome.

Your best bet is probably going to be browsing mods by category at http://tesnexus.com/. Find a few mods you like and start the learning process of how to install them properly. Read the stickied threads at the top of the main forum page here, and see if you can get two or three mods working correctly. Just that much will probably take some time. But getting the first few mods installed correctly and working correctly is going to save you headaches.

Once you've done that, play the game for a while and see what you like and what you don't like. Then, conversations about which mods are to your taste will be more fruitful.

Cheers.

Well, naturally I'm going to take advantage of this remark and just tell you everything I did starting out.

Start by checking out the http://www.gamesas.com/?showtopic=1010109&hl= to get a good idea of what's available. If you feel overwhelmed, be glad. That just shows how many options there really are for pretty much anything you're looking for.

After you drown in the wave of mods that seems to never end, I highly suggest to just playing the original game for a while and making a list of everything you don't like about the game. This can be graphics, the interface, interactions with NPCs and creatures, combat, magic, etc.

Once you categorize your modding desires, either go back to the list of lists or post your interests here. That way others can give you a friendly nudge in the right direction.

If you'd rather be spoon-fed a specific list of mods you should get that will definitely be compatible, you might enjoy reading my blog, which is the second link in my signature. I update it regularly as I add more to my game.

Hopefully I helped, and feel free to ask if we can help you with anything more specific!

Race Balancing project has about 4-5 new beast type races to choose from that are all lore correct and well integrated into the game.

Mods that "fix" areas of oblivion I think are very bad on vanilla version:
I'll just tell which ones I use but there's more choice

leveling system:

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=14065

Interface aka UI

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10763

female body.

can't link, but register on nexus, and search for HGEC

Ok, so I've been playing awhile now and found I quite like that HGEC body mod, I also found a race mod I liked, Tabaxi, so damn cute. Anyway, I'd like to have different hair and better looking faces, if someone could point me in the right direction there, that'd be awesome. The only two I found didn't really work out for me, even though I followed everything exactly. And maybe some clothing for the A-Cup HGEC body? That's all I really need help with anymore. The hair and faces is mostly for the NPCs, it's weird being a catgirl and so much better looking than the humans, as the Tabaxi mod came with several custom hair options and an adorable face. Whether or not the hair and faces are usable by the PC doesn't really matter much to me, I just want less ugly NPCs.

For HGEC I would suggest you check out "EVE HGEC Eyecandy Variants Expansion" as that gives you both the body types and the clothing/Armor to go with it - all kinds of sizes.
Perhaps add a Body texture mod on top of that. Such as "High Rez Skin Textures for HGEC" (Another one we can't link to on this forum.)

Try http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=21104. It adds a lot (so a good bet for starting out) including hair and eye additions. Added to NPCs as well, with the right included esp files.

I'm not sure I'm understanding the EVE file. Does it actually add new clothing or just conform the current clothing already in the game to make sense with A-Cup briasts? That'd certainly be nice, as the only way you can tell she's an A-Cup is she wanders around naked. Could work I guess if I ever wanted to roleplay a nudist.

Edit: Ok, I started up a new game to test, it still looks like she's a B-cup when wearing clothes, and the hairs, well, none of those worked...I'm confused. -.- Also, now every time I hit done after creating a character, the game crashes. >.> I also just realized that EVE mod is for people who actually like large briasts, I am not one of those people.C and E are too large for me. I want A and nothing else.

It replaces the clothing and armour that comes with the game to HGEC versions.
Without this, putting on any clothing effectively undoes the changes to the body. Clothing in fact replaces the body graphics for the area they cover.
So, for instance; selecting your chosen body type will change all the clothing to be of the same shape, so she still looks like an A-cup no matter what she is wearing.

Oh that's right, Eve only covers a limited set of the HGEC body types. Perhaps you should just search for HGEC on TESNExus, and see what you can find....Ah try http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=33086

As for your crashing; Don't know, perhaps a load order issue or something.

Well, as it turns out, it was Cobl crashing me. I changed up the load order to go in multiple ways, but it didn't make any difference, I always crashed and the hairstyles never worked. I even loaded my Tabaxi game and checked on the NPCs, but none of them looked any different. That A-cup mod you linked me to there I already had, I just assumed EVE was better, so I uninstalled the A-Cup mode, installed EVE, noticed nothing better, and had already re-installed the A-Cup mod. I just want new clothes, not necessarily changes to the vanilla clothes to suit A-Cup, as I already have that, I want custom clothing that looks good with A-Cup, if those even exist, since almost everyone prefers large briasts. Hairstyles that work and don't crash me to the desktop would also be a plus, alongside the ability to make better looking Imperials, Bretons, Redguards, etc.

So right now all I have is HGEC, A-Cup clothing and armor, custom race fix, and the tabaxi race. I rid myself of Cobl and it's desire to crash me.

Edit: To answer Phoenix, which I totally forgot to do, because I'm a dumb blonde :P I only hope he looks at this, or someone else decides to take a stab at it.

Have you played Oblivion already? Yes.
What sort of things interest you? Hunting. When I got out of the sewers I had a bow and arrow on me, saw some deer a few feet away, decided, what the hell, and took my best shot. They were a good 20 feet away and I nailed 'em both in one shot, so I then decided since I was a pretty good shot, I'd roleplay a hunter for the first time. So anything that'd be good for hunters. Clothing would interest me as well, I can't find any clothing mods with more than one outfit in them. -.-; Did find a nice cape/cloak mod though.
What type of Character do you usually play? (good/evil, theif/mage, roleplayer/random-no-story-hack-and-slasher?) I'm a roleplayer.
Are there specific types of mods you think would interest you? (Quests, graphic mods, gameplay mods, overhauls, etc.) I would LOVE to see more NPCs travelling the roads. You know how depressing it is to go for a horse ride through the country side and only see a single guard also on his horse? What's up with that?
When did you leave? Oh, never, I just started pretty much. I won't be leaving for a long time.
What did you not like about Oblivion? What did Oblivion not have or need more of? Hm, I pretty much answered this already in the what would interest me section.
Male or female character? Female, always.

The part of Cobl that has the hairs and races is basically a stripped down version of Race balancing Project. Amoung the races is the tabaxi race which goes by the name "Ohmes-raht". So if you mostly just wanted COBL for that you could get RBP instead.... I should note that it does make some balance changes as well, but I personally prefer them over the vanilla balance or lack there of (ie: races being largely cosmetic and any race could easily be something they're not supposed to be, oreven a master of all trades.)

Well MMM would give you a lot of additionally creatures to go after; it also has a crafting system included. Crafty bits has a crafting system... Theres a Druid mod by pimpskinny or something likethat which is pretty decent. Shadow Ranger might be a good mod to try. has some new armor/clothing, bows, etc. if I recall correctly. Some of the individual clothing/armor mods are pretty good if you're just looking for a outfit for your character to wear all the time. Go to the list of lists and find the "levelled list" one if you want a bunch of items added to the level lists... there's a lot listed there.

There's several mods like crowded roads, A certain mod by Kuertee (NPCs Travel, or Enemies Travel... I think) that makes the random enemy NPCs actually wander a bit, tamriel travellers adds a bunch of travelling merchants, Black horse courier expanded I think adds more black horse couriers.... Personally I'm a people person and I don't really like those mods because usually the NPCs added have nothing unique to say/no personality and it bothers me because then they feel like cardboard cut out props to me.

Well, since you didn't respond to what I said the first time, I suppose I'll try to help you again.

If you're going to be a hunter-type character, there's about three things you probably want to look at before anything else:

First, check out http://www.gamesas.com/?showtopic=1053088&hl=. It may seem like a lot, but it's really not, and his descriptions make it pretty easy to know whether it's the kind of thing you're going to be interested in or not. I know for a fact that there's at least a couple mods that add travelers to the roads, and if not direct links, whatever he mentions should allow you to google and find it pretty easily.

Second, PLEASE take a look at http://matthewkaine.blogspot.com/. I may seem like I'm just trying to get views or whatever, but it really is a good up-to-date resource for everything I would personally recommend. In terms of hunting and roleplay, check out the discussions/videos for Creatures Alive (makes the wilderness feel a lot more alive and potentially dangerous), Tamriel NPCs Revamped (gives people better looking faces to suit their personalities, classes, and races), Alive Waters (adds a large amount of new fish varieties to kill for ingredients), and Enhanced Economy (includes an option to adjust the prices of hides to be more valuable).

Third, check out http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1174032-do-these-kinds-of-mods-exist/ that dealt with hunter related elements. It mainly covers camping, crafting, and eating-related mods.

And I would give you a couple links to hunter-related clothing, but if you're sticking with A-Cup, there's very little I can do for you. A-Cup tends not to be well-supported. You actually might prefer Robert's Female, which by default has a smaller briast size. I personally prefer it over HGEC because it's a ton better at eliminating body seams. Just my two septims. Hope I was more useful to you this time.

That Shadow Ranger mod looks and sounds awesome, in the process of downloading it now. I'll take a look at the travelling NPC mods you listed.

Hm, I would use a different body but the Tabaxi mod says I need to use HGEC, so I can't really do that without causing problems I'm assuming. I suppose I can upgrade to B, that's also an acceptable size to me, so if those clothing mods fit a B-Cup, I'll take them. Enhanced Economy sounds good to me though, so does Creatures Alive, I'll look into both of those. Edit 2: You know, I read even more on that list and ended up taking just about everything there was. I especially love that blind lock picking, makes it about as difficult as it'd be in real life, at least, for me, I can't pick locks, nor do I really care to know how. All about the immersion. I appreciate the help. ^^

Edit: Ok, I've upgraded to B-Cup, fire away with those clothing mods. :P

Return to IV - Oblivion
