Which perks do YOU think are a waste?

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 1:28 pm

Always thought these were useful for new players on the FO3 forum...

What PERKS do you think are a waste of a perk or maybe just a convenience that you can easily live without?

Which perks are for jerks?

Personally, I'll nominate "hunters discipline" for archery, sure It'd be nice to get some extra arrows back but its not like keeping them stocked up is really an issue. Strictly a convenience perk.

You?

(PS, there's no bad perk if its the perk you want so no one get butt hurt about it.)

(PPS, this is meant as A PLAYER GUIDE, and NOT a place to complain)

All of lockpicking. All of speechcraft. Everything else has some roleplay use or does something at least.

I hate that I have to take Fists of Steel & Cushioned to get Conditioning from Heavy Armour. As a khajiit who doesn't jump off cliffs, the former two are useless to me but I -really- want the last.

Good one.

Even for a sneak thief, lock picking perks are pretty much just a convenience and won't help you slay a dragon.

You can still pick any lock without them.

Another vote for Lockpicking.

Its so boring as well though, its not even remotely thought out. Why would I spend a talent point making Novice Locks easier? Why? Are Novice locks ever hard for anyone? No. That perk shouldn't even exist, but its REQUIRED.

Quick Hands is repetitive with sneaking in general. If you're "hidden" you won't ever be caught.

Wax Key has no purpose. Its neat I guess, but are those keys useful in anyway at all? Its already unlocked, why do you need a key?

Golden Touch is fine, but it takes a 4 perk investment to get. This should have been the FIRST in this tree. Should have been 0/5 10/50% more gold.

Treasure Hunter is great too, but a 5 perk investment.

Unbreakable is bad, there is no shortage of lock picks, and breaking is one of the only good ways to skill up...

etc.

Experimenter, Master Trader (would be better if it wasn't the lvl100 perk), all of Lockpicking (Bethesda, when a skill has a minigame it makes the level almost completely pointless).

I have come to agree that lock-picking is entirely worthless since I picked an expert lock with three picks (broke two) with nineteen lock-picking skill. I also see speech as a useless considering the game throws money at you.

Any Apprentice, Adept, Expert and so on for all the casting perks, when your so limited on the amount of points you can spend it seems like you never want to get those perks and instead get the other ones like improved healing or fire damage, only novice is useful because its required to get any other perk in those trees.

Seriously, I don't even know why some skills have a perk tree. Lockpicking and Pickpocket could have been merged in a single Thievery skill. And Speec could have been completely removed.

most of the dual casting perks. For nominal gains in power the spells cost ridiculous amounts more than they did before. It is almost like you are taking a perk to make your spells worse.

All of lockpicking, all of speachcraft.

Wow. That seems crazy unless you assume exploiting Enchantment for 0 casting costs. Magicka management is incredibly important.

Heh, the perk is good for people who don't use magic often.

Like I have a character who only use Alteration magic so better effects are worth is since I don't need my magicka for anything else.

I don't know why they didn't do what they did with fallout 3 new vegas where you can't even attempt a master lock unless you have the appropriate amount of skill. Fallout 3 New Vegas had the same minigame but no one complained that the skill was useless.

Only Lock picking I would Say. Yea if you don't level it up you break like 5 billion picks on a Master lock, but you always have plenty enough to get in to what ever you want once you get settled in. And if your in the thieves guild and do what I do, and every time to go to sell something to your fence you buy ALL the picks they have. You almost feel like you have too many. :P

Lockpicking isn't that bad. I can't imagine playing without the "better loot" perk 'cause I'm scared I'd miss my chance at finding something that's worth it. I'd like to say pickpocketing, but that has the perk to increase carrying capacity by 100. So I'm going to say speechcraft--only things in there that are any good are more barter gold by 1500 and sell anything to any merchant, but I've already got like 150k and haven't needed those at all, so they're definitely not needed..

All of the damage and defense increasing ones.

Not that they in themselves are bad, but with leveled enemies, the result of them is you feel more like you're paying a perk to be allowed to CONTINUE using the weapon you've already been using, rather than picking a weapon to be amazing at. Just as an example, with the perk/skill system of Fallout New Vegas, I can be amazing in Unarmed but still competent enough to utilize guns or explosives when I need to. Here it feels like if I'm fighting an enemy where a bow would be better, it just doesn't freaking matter because my bow damage is soooooo pathetic compared to my axe damage. Perks should be a REWARD, but it feels more like a perk means all weapons lose 20% damage EXCEPT the one you choose.

Pickpocketing can be extremely useful. I've told this story once already on these forums, but I recently picked a black soul gem out of a ascendant necromancer's pocket, then killed him with a soultrap dagger and caught his soul in his own gem. You can also kill people in broad daylight in front of guards by planting poison on them, and NPCs often have unexpected goodies on them, sometimes really nice enchanted stuff.

However... Stealth past the first point. Point 1: 20% sneak bonus. Points 2-5: 5% bonus each. Seriously? One item makes up for those 4 perk points.

Edit: Experimenter: You'll eventually learn every effect of every ingredient anyway, then it's 3 perk points you'll never get back.

Critical charge: Good luck hitting anything with that. Waste of a perk to have, waste of stamina to use. Too easy to use accidentally.

what??? hunters disiplen is a must have if you ONLY use bows (like me) and want to use the highest arrows you can at the lowest level possible. only haveing 20 of them (or less sometimes) means you gotta have that perk. or just wait for the shop to re-spawn SEVRAL times to get another few.
