Which race best fits the lore...

Post » Mon Nov 15, 2010 4:21 am

I know this is probably beating a dead horse, so my apologies.

I'm gearing up to do the main quest and I'm getting my no cheat mods ready. Just enhancers and stuff like that.

My question is what race best fits the lore to be Neverine?

And while were on this subject, what class would you choose?

Sign?

Most curious to what you have to say, especially the ones who played it multiple times with different races.

Doubt this needs to be in the lore forum, but hey I'll try to answer anyway.

For the Nerevarine I think an obvious choice would probably be Dunmer, as you're heading to Morrowind and Nerevar was Chimer. But these are rather superficial reasons. It could be equally logical that you are Cyrodiilic; you come from the Imperial Prison.

Sign? For the Incarnate, perhaps the Warrior, again for the superficial reason Nerevar was a Warrior. For a class, maybe Knight.

But in reality, the Nerevarine is who you make it; ANY class, sign, or race is going to be perfect for the Nerevarine because his identity is objectively subjective.

Well, my main question is lore based, thats whats important to me. Thanks for you reply. -keith

[quote] you come from the Imperial Prison

So the only race locked in an Imperial prison is a Cyrodiilic?

No.

The fact you brought that fact up proves even more that ethnicity doesn't matter, in relation to a lore-correct Nerevarine. It's going to be lore-correct regardless.

Let's elaborate a bit

Lore-wise, dunmer is the logical option - if Azura has a hand in picking who's going to be Nerevarine, a dunmer would be the race of choice (dunmer aren't exactly fond of strangers)

being the more numerous race in Cyrodill, Imperials are probably the most numerous in it's jail too - and would probably make a more empire-minded Nerevarine. Which would suite the emperor and make it a 'better' candidate in the emperor's eye

But with prophecies being what they are - and the emperor is at least partly aware of that one, anyone fitting the bill is likely to get mustered up, not matter what races he belongs to.

Have you played all the way through Morrowind yet? If not, do not read the following, and just trust me that any race works equally well as the Incarnate.

Spoiler
The OUTLANDER incarnate, that is. The one thing the Nerevarine cannot be is Dunmer from Vvardenfell, and probably not Morrowind. I suppose he could be an expatriate; a Dunmer from Cheydinhal, for example. But he can just as easily be of any other race. The important thing is that he is born on a certain day to uncertain parents, anywhere but Morrowind, definitely anywhere but Vvardenfell.

Well I have played the main quest long ago on xbox if thats what you mean by *playing through MW*
Darn, now that I quoted you I can see. But i'm not quite sure what you mean by it. I know it doesn't
really matter what race plays the role but I just want to stay with the lore and the mostly *likely* race.

Thanks for your input.

They're all equally likely. The prophecy's constructed like that.

Dunmer makes the most sense to me seeing as Nerevar was the same race (well sorta) and even though he could be anything I think being reincarnated into the same race is the most poetic.

It would be ironic to have a Nord or one of the slave races (Argonian, Khajiit) be the savior of the Dunmer, but really whatever race you are will do; the point is that the prophecy Azura finagled points to you.

It should be pointed out that all of the failed incarnates were Dunmer.

To preserve the feel of the world, I also think that a Dunmer would be the most natural choice - of course, every Ashlander (esp. them) and civilized Dunmer assumes that the re-incarnation of Lord Nerevar will be a Dunmer. They would be, I assume, *very* surprised to see that their future leader and saviour is of another race - unfortunately, there's no dialogue for that case. Everyone just accepts that you're fitting their preconception about who the Nerevarine will be...
Mind you, it's not an argument that the Nerevarine should be Dunmer, lore-wise, but only that I think that a Dunmer Nerevarine fits better into the game.

Hmm...What really makes me laugh is an orc as the savior.

But as previusly stated, the prof specifficly states that the nerevarine must be an outlander, so its less likely that someone whose well versed in the profhicies will believe you if your dunmer.

On Vvardenfell, everyone not born on the island or raised elsewhere is an "outlander". Even Dunmer from the mainland.

Anyone could fit into the position, really, it was never specified what race the Nerevarine would be, and I don't think what race Nerevar was makes much difference. Any race could potentially be the Incarnate, but I think a Dunmer would be a bit more likely to accept to take up the task of fulfilling the prophecies, since the Nerevarine would supposedly drive outlanders from Morrowind, though that is not something you actually need to do in the game, you do not know that at first, and it seems a bit illogical that anyone of a race that is not Dunmer would try to fulfill such a prophecy, being as that would involve driving your own kind from Morrowind, though if you look at it that way, it wouldn't make much sense for ANYONE who can do it to try to actually try to fulfill the prophecy, since the Nerevarine must be an outlander, and even outland Dunmer probably would not want to drive all outlanders from Morrowind, since they themselves are outlanders. In the end though, Bethesda left the prophecy pretty open as to what race the Nerevarine can be, obviously done to make it work no matter what race you choose.

Ultimately, that aspect of the main quest never made much sense to me, the obvious advantages of having a native hero in your pocket aside, I'd think that even with the Emperor's orders, the Blades would at least question trying to fulfill prophecies that the natives claim will lead to the Empire being driven from the land.

On Vvardenfell, everyone not born on the island or raised elsewhere is an "outlander". Even Dunmer from the mainland.

Indeed, and as long as people could tell that you were not a native (which would probably show in your accent and ways, even if this is not reflected in the game.) the whole thing would not apply.

And besides, I recall the thing about the Nerevarine being an Outlander

It should be pointed out that all of the failed incarnates were Dunmer.

That's natural, since aside from you who were sent to Morrowind because the Emperor seems to believe you might be the Nerevarine, the only people who could really WANT to see the prophecy fulfilled are Dunmer, it has an obvious appeal to many Dunmer, especially Ashlanders, who would likely want nothing more than to drive out the foreign occupation and cast down the false gods of the Tribunal.

There's also the fact that they were FAILED incarnates, aside from getting killed while attempting to fulfill the prophecies, a good reason why they might fail is because they don't meet all the requirements, I'd hardly say that the races of people who couldn't fulfill the prophecies say much about who the one who can fulfill them will be.

Albides point in consideration, it's still cooler to play as Dunmer. Cuz it's Dunmerland.

Peakstar was found washed ashore; it appears that she was probably an outlander. As for the others, it is uncertain, but interestingly, all of the failed incarnates lived during either the Reman Empire or the Septim Empire.

Well that's stretching it a bit. Being washed ashore does in no way prove she was an outlander, or even increase the probability of it. She might as well have been on a fishing boat that keeled over, or one of those neat transport ships that take you all over Vvardenfell - provided they are not standing around waiting for the PC, which seems to be what they do most of the time.

I just realized from some dialog from the other characters when you query them about the Neverine they say the next one
will flush out the outlanders. Now wouldn't that be ironic to be Nerverine and to flush out the outlanders when you yourself
are one? I find that a bit strange indeed.

my next morrowind charicter will be a argonian (or a argonian-based mod race) purely to gloat at the prophecy. of course, i've made him out to be a jerk with a heart of gold in the first place...makes sense as something he would do.

Imo, it would probably be a Dunmer. But with the point of the the Incarnate being and Outlander, it would probably be an Imperial or Breton. On second thought, the fact of it being a Dunmer might also be a Dunmer who was born outside of Morrowind and was unfamiliar with facts about Morrowind until he was shipped there via the prison ship.
