So many choices..
I'm going to pick Polearms, even if it was in a tight struggle with flails.

Cheesecake. You throw it on the ground and people are like "zomg wtf cheescake ftw!" then while they're distracted by its sheer awesomeness you kill them.

I had a tough time picking between spears, crossbows, and throwing weapons. I ended up going with spears.

I want throwing spears!

Just kidding, plain old spears are good enough for me, I'm not that big a fan of throwing weapons unless they're grenades, honestly. I don't mind them as a desperate measure, but just throwing you're weapons when you could just as easily hit people with them just isn't my thing, I know it's cliche to ask for spears here, but let's face it, it just makes sense for spears to be in the game. I mean, there a pretty basic weapon that's been around for a long time throughout history, so why wouldn't they be in Skyrim. The other options on the other hand are not basic weapons, except maybe crossbows and throwing weapons, and things like flails would probably be hard to do, what with having a chain to simulate and all that. A spear on the other hand would be pretty easy to do, especially if they already have polearms, roughly the same mechanics could likely apply, there just needs to be more emphasis put on stabing than with other polearms.

yes, spears get the most publicity in these forums, probably because the were in morrowind.

Crossbows and throwing weapons were too, though, but I used spears in Morrowind, I rarely bothered with the other two.

true, but throwing weapons were so useless IMO. It was always better to have a bow/crossbow.

spears DO get the most attention in this forum though, and I think the reason it beats down flails in this poll is because flails weren't in morrowind, and morrowind is the fan favorite here.

i think if people looked at this poll objectively then flails and polearms would be closer. There's no way people want crossbows more than they would want a flail

EDIT: Crossbows are only doing so well in the poll because they were in Morrowind IMO

Maybe ppl just don't like flails...I don't like them and it has nothing to do with MW nostalgia.

You don't like them? i like all these weapons. not liking or liking flails doesn't have to do with MW nostalgia, but liking spears, throwing weapons, and crossbows does have to do with MW nostalgia

I'm happy with what we already know will be in, but if any of these were to be added, I'd definitely root for spears. A faux-medieval/fantasy setting just doesn't quite seem complete without them.

I plan to dual-wield axes, though, so I feel pretty safe. I mean, how could there not be single-handed axes?

Why do people want flails?
the single handed flail with the morningstar on the end is a Victorian invention and in most cases they made the flails out of Antique maces just to keep the house looking as gothic and old as possible, "fashion" if you will.

The only flails used in battle were more like polearm nunchuks and were used by the peasents to thresh the wheat, when levied into armies the peasents took the flails because they realised that it'll hurt if you got hit by one.

The only Battle Flail that I know of is of Gasconian backround and is a 6 foot tall metal clad copy of the farming model. It was used by a local knight in battle against the French and he got taken hostage by a sergeant, the end.

~Polearms unfortunatly cannot be implemented into TES without irritating me.
A Poleax is used differantly from a halberd
which in turn is differant from a Bill
which in turn is differant from a Voulge
which in turn is differant from a Swordstave
"""""""""""""" Glaive
"""""""""""""""Spear
get the picture guys?

I want (read: need) spears and I never played Morrowind. And no, other polearms will not cut it. Like someone mentioned, they're all used differently. I'm really not even sure how it can be claimed that it's too much work to animate and implement, unless BGS isn't too confident about the AI's ability to deal with them. I mean come on... Nords without spears? :poke:

I voted other. My magic based character would pefer to use wands, or staves.

If there were no magic, I would choose an axe, as it is a very versatile weapon/tool.

I would really have to see how the combat would work….

For instance, are we going to get a slightly more complex and interesting melee combat model? Or, will it just be simplistic lining up on the person and thrashing at him/her? The answer to this question is ALL ABOUT animations, collision detection, and different feels & uses for each type of weapon.

If you could USE a spear like a ‘spear’ then fine. If you could use a flail like something that is a heavy thing at the end of chain on a handle then fine. However, if not even the illusion of specialized animations and collision detection will be employed then I see no point.

Why do people want flails?

Skyrim is a brutal and unforgiving land. Nothing is more brutal then a crushing blunt weapon like a flail. It has more flair then a typical mace and it would be cool to see Bethesda be the first to do them right and well in a modern video game. Everyone says they would be too hard to do as an excuse to write them off... well can the same not be said for Dragons? And Bethesda didn't shy away from that challenge now did they? No they made the best damn dragons I've ever seen in a video game. I believe they could do the same with Flails.

As for spears. It's not that I don't want them in the game. As I do. Spear's probably make more sense as far as Norse warriors go. The úlfhéenar are sometimes described as Odin's special warriors, with the pelt from a wolf and a spear as distinguishing features.

I just think I would prefer to use a Flail because it's brutality and crushing force. I think a flail strike to the head or shield would cause more damage then a spear thrust. Also thinking about finishing move animations. Would it not be epic to see a spikey ball end of the flail thwack and stick into the head of your enemy? I can only begin to imagine the possibilities for kill animations/finishing moves that are a new feature in Skyrim.
