Which would be better?

Post » Mon May 02, 2011 3:20 am

With the announcement of Skyrim, I decided to finally give Morriwind a try. My two options are buy the xbox version and use my 360 or buy the pc version and use a non-gaming computer, which also happens to be a laptop. My first choice would be pc, for mods, but I don't know if the computer will be an issue. If i get the pc version i'll use steam, but I don't know where to get an xbox version. Any advice would be appreciated.

Well if you buy the Xbox version play it on the original Xbox because Xbox 360 takes forever to load the game. You would probably have to buy it online I doubt many stores carry Morrowind for Xbox anymore. But I recommend the PC version. Its an old game so I'm sure it would run fine on a nongaming computer. So if possible go for the PC version, there is a lot more you can do with the PC version and it is all around more fun. Good luck and have fun in Morrowind.

I say PC, it is an older game, so it should run pretty smoothly on your laptop. And it is easier to find, Best Buy still sells it.

As for the vanilla game, the laptop should be more than adequate.

If you intend to add all sorts of hi-res textures and replacers, graphics extenders, or extra NPCs and creatures on the PC version, your frame rate could drop to unplayable levels. At one point, my 6 or 7 year old system would go from "fine" to about 1 frame per second or less during combat (against a group of MCA-added opponents), and just walking around Sadrith Mora was a problem for some reason; other areas were fine and ran smoothly. You can't really fight at 1 FPS, because the opponent may not even be where you're striking anymore. It's even worse when a guard suddenly steps between you and the adversary, and you find that you hit the guard before you even saw him. I had to uninstall a couple of mods to make it playable again, at least until I upgraded the system with a new motherboard and processor.

Then again, if you use the Xbox, you can't run ANY mods, so I'd still suggest the PC version.

Framerate really does depend on what mods you intend to use. The vast majority of them won't pose a huge FPS problem though, even on older computers - you should be able to play most mods just fine. It's a matter of just adding the mods you want slowly and testing them to make sure that they run okay and don't cause an unacceptable slowdown, even for those with more high-spec computers.

Also, I'm not sure how well Steam and mods get along - you might want to run a google search on that. I'm afraid I can't offer any advice, because I've never used Steam myself.

Most importantly, have fun with Morrowind. It truly is an amazing game. It's nearly eight years since I first got it, and I'm still addicted :)
