Which would you recommend?

Morrowind. The story is better, the side-quests are better, the world is more detailed and the characters more interesting. The only downside it the graphics. It's uglier to start out with, but there are a ton of graphics-upgrade mods that make it look good even for a modern game.

And in Morrowind there are many glitches.

Realy depends on what kind of "gamer" you are. For me graphics is nearly 50% of the game, i also like things like voice-dialog and fast-travel etc. Mostly because I play to releax, so i dont bother reading, watching horrible graphics etc. Neither would i like to spend a whole year to get to the other side of the map. But if your realy into story, lore & [censored] I can amagine Morrowind is much more fun. I loved Oblivion and realy looking forward to ES:V.

Since I can only guess the majorty of the people here is over avarege interested in story, lore, quest etc, I can see why Morrowind is mostly recomended.

Everyone has their own taste. Makes the world much less boring:)

Morrowind? Bad graphics?

Nah, but yeah. If you start off with Oblivion, I can see how it would be hard to get into Oblivion.

RP? Buy Morrowind. FPS? Get Oblivion. They cater to different tastes, so the players develop a hatred for the other "camp" that doesn't play the same style game as them.

Morrowind is harder to get into, with a high initial failure rate at EVERYTHING, hostile attitudes from almost all of the NPCs, and a whole bunch of stuff out there that's a bit too tough to handle at low level. It's got far more detail though, a steadily growing list of topics for conversation as you go, more types or skills, armor, weapons, and everything else, and you can even equip a robe over your armor, with clothing underneath, all at the same time. Getting around is a matter of paying for transportation from a Silt Strider caravaner, shipmaster, or teleportation Guild Guide, which all fit seamlessly into the world, but destinations are somewhat limited. Combat is "stylized", and not as "thrilling" as Oblivion's, but works very well from a "RP" point of view that it's the result which counts. Your stats determine how well you do at everything. The "artistic vision" is unique and different, if you can upgrade the outdated graphics that represent it. If you can, get the PC version for mods and graphics improvements, as well as bug fixes (it's not perfect, I'll freely admit).

Oblivion is far more "beautiful" and action based, and your abilities as a player trump the skills of the character in most cases. You CAN'T fail, the game won't allow you to even try anything that's one point above your current skill level, and you succeed 100% of the time at anything that's at or below. Fast Travel lets you go anywhere from almost anyplace at the click of your map, which is fine because the heavy-handed levelling and scaling means that everything is pretty much the same as everywhere else, and having to do all that repetitive stuff along the way by walking there would be boring. As an action game, OB is great, but much more "shallow" than Morrowind, with a curious absence of "consequences". The most popular OB mods (MMM, OOO) make the game play a bit more like Morrowind.

I finished both games, but got bored with OB by about 1/3 of the way through, and only did the rest of the Main Quest out of a sense of "I need to finish this thing" before going back to MW.

Definitely Morrowind. Just about everything is better except for the fighting/stealth/magic mechanics, which can feel clunky. But the world is far, far more developed. 10 factions to join instead of 4 in Oblivion - and those 10 factions have all kinds of tensions/alliances between each other while Oblivon's 4 exist in a sort of bubble.

Is it just me or does the Oblivion hate never go away?

*sigh*

I dont think that there is a simple hate of oblivion I think the more acurate thing to say is dissapointment they made a really good picture with great visuals but lets face it you just didnt feel as emerged in the world as you did with Morrowind. So my choice is obvious Morrowind

It's not that Oblivion's BAD, it's just so different in focus from the earlier games that it alienated a lot of the TES fans. DF and MW were very RP oriented, with character skill determining EVERYTHING. Oblivion plays more like a FPS, where your skill as a player is the main factor, and many skills are meaningless or relatively pointless to improve. The Oblivion fans who like it as an action game can't understand why the RP fans don't like it, and the RP fans feel cheated. If GM were to come out with next year's Corvette as an SUV, some people would love it, and other long-term Corvette owners would burn their car out of spite [especially if the purchase was based on previous experience or reputation]. Bethesda's changes were guaranteed to cause friction.
