Considering it wouldnt be that hard for modern technology to hit it, and fallouts technology, whilst different, is probably at least equal to our own in that regard (whilst the computers dont have a GUI, they do have AI so the innards are more powerful which is what counts).... I'd say no insider job required.

You know the bomb in the middle of Megaton?, they hit the White House with the same type of bomb and then just mini nuked the rest of the DC area, but thats my theory on how they bombed the Capital Wastelands

I think they pretty much tac- nuked the white house, and then sent a much larger bomb to blow up the rest of DC.

It was a tactical hit I'm sure. On the East coast West-Tek was hit as well as Mariposa Base I think, two of the major targets in California alone.

I think Mariposa base was hit though. I can't remember off the top of my head. I know everyone survived though.

Mariposa Base was not hit, it was too new and too secret.

West-Tek suffered at least a direct hit but considering how the place is flattened a saturation attack was likely used to ensure nothing was left standing.

*idly wonders if Bethesda had to get the NSA to add a site exception to Echelon just to avoid all the crap hits it would generate just by talking about Fallout 3 and where it's set*

It's very unlikely the president would have been anywhere near the White House by that time. At the first hint of trouble the president would be either in Air Force One, or deep inside Cheyenne Mountain at NORAD headquarters. In fact Cheyenne Mountain is the location of Vault 0 in Fallout Tactics, where all the "best and brightest" were sent to survive the bombs. And yes some of you will say Tactics isn't canon, but Bethesda has incorporated it into Fallout 3 (Lyons talks about events in Chicago 30 years before, and the Enclave troops wear Tactics style power armor)..

In the real world, isnt his continuity of operations centre at or very close to camp david? (NORAD is a long way away to go....)

It does not matter, in Fallout the president moved to a secure location (likely the Oil Rig) months before the Great War.

No, in the real world the president would be airborne in AF1 so the enemy could not pinpoint his position. This would also give him more time to give the launch order if necessary..

Umm In FO3 You can go see the white house and its still standing so I doubt that the White house was hit directly with a nuclear bomb

I think, like many others, you have confused the Capital building with the white house. The white house is just a few remains of wall, a staircase, and a few nick nacks.

Does anyone else get the feeling that the mere fact that the White House isn't in its correct position directly related to govt. intervention? I mean, anyone with brains could piece together a rough map of current RL DC just based on what we have now, regardless of incorrect positions and the obvious buildings that shouldn't be there.

Well ... if you are talking about the White House building on the game there are a few errors, the world map icon is incorrect located but in the game world it is corrected located as its north of the Washington Monument (we can see it directly south), another error is Pennsylvania Avenue streets being incorrectly named, the 17th Street should actually be the 14th Street.

Also can only go to the east fence of the White House, we never get to see The Ellipse since rubble blocks the way.

Besides that ... its just a building, considering the Canadians burned it down its not really expected to survive.
