Who actually uses maces?

Post » Fri Jan 03, 2014 12:39 pm

After seeing a lot of polls and reading i have always gotten the impression that the minority use maces.

So my question is do you use maces a lot? why do you like about it and what do you dislike about it?

I have always been a sword guy myself but lately have beginning to enjoy bashing skulls inn with the maces as they actually are pretty cool

There's just something really personal about sinking a sword into an enemies gullet. So I usually use swords.

However, I want to try using a mace on my next sword and board character. 'Twill be an Orc no doubt. Smashing and crushing skulls ftw. Plus, there is a certain unique mace that you can get at level 1. ;)

True about the sword part but it is also very satisfying crushing the skull of a person you really dislike. Like a certain guy in whiterun.

I feel getting beaten to death by a mace must be way more painfull than getting stabbed by a sword

My Orc barbarian uses a spiked steel mace when things get too close/cramped for his 2-handed sword. It's fun to use and looks wicked hanging off his belt when I'm using my greatsword.

My Orc uses a mace. It just fits his style. He will also use a war axe and dual wield them. I had a Nord 1H with shield that also used a mace. Shield bash, mace to the face. The one thing I rarely use anymore is a sword. I don't know why. My thief uses them, but I haven't loaded him up since last summer. I guess my mage does considering that he'll conjure a sword every now and then.

Oh gods yes! Ever tried a Warhammer? Even more brutal. Especially when you get the perk that allows you to decapitate(!!) enemies.

Decapitation? With a Warhammer? Yes please!

Regardless, I will be trying out Maces very soon!

I have never used a mace in combat but I do use the Mace Of Molag Bal to hit Serana's ass.

Lol

On an oddly related note, I like to use mace's enchanted with fire to bludgeon undead. It's my preferred method of taking out undead things. I save swords for my human opponents.

Going against the thread here, in a way, but I'll give it a go anyway.

I very rarely use maces, and that is augmented by me favoring the 2-handed weapons in general. They just feel too slow and sluggish to me, which is rather strange to me, as I tend to prefer the warhammers among the 2-handed weapons. Among the one-handed weapons I mostly use swords, and sometimes axes. Which is also a little strange to me, since swords are my least favorite weapons in two-handed.

I think the reason for this is that I have very different expectations from the weapons and play very differently with them. Two-handed weapons are made to hit slower, harder and preferably when out of the range of a one-handed weapons and the warhammer, while slow, works very well to this i my experience. One-handed weapons, on the other hand, either has to be faster(dual wield) or supported by the defense of a shield to be utilized at its full potential*, bar from a weapon/spell combo. The one-handed axe and sword does this well, but the mace feels like it makes me unable to use my shield or other weapon with good effect, turning me off the weapon.

*Not trying to reason like a power-gamer here, trying to establish my character as greatly powerful or anything like that.

I've thought about this same thing. I'm not sure I would ever use maces. If I ever did with any race, it'd only be Orcs and even then, I'd be more tempted to use warhammers or battleaxes before I'd use maces. I just think maces seem a little boring.

They many funny sounds when you hit people with them. I intentionally give them a higher upgrade when smithing, so it make more of a difference. In all honesty i think swords/axes/maces should have varying levels of stagger power.

Also there's somthing oddly satisfying about dual wielding two stahlrim maces, one with thunder, and one with frost.

I think one of my favorite maces is the nordic mace though.

Also, i can't believe there is no paladinish mace in the game. Beth you guys are such trolls! No silver mace OR dawnguard mace.

as i play a cleric and crusader as 2 of my characters, i use maces quite a lot actually. I think part of it is that whenever anyone thinks of knight in shining armor, the black knight, or a mercenary (also called sellSWORDS), they think of a sword. The only generic RPG class that really uses maces are D&D style clerics and sometimes Paladins (who also wield swords in a lot of games) and that is about.

Decapitating enemies with a mace is strange yet satisfying.

To be fair if you use a Daedric mace it is not as strange with how it looks.

Out of interest, what are the skills and race you use for a cleric? Sounds fun.

I always interpreted the "Crusader" as a class more suited for a two-handed weapon than a mace. It is perhaps not as neatly divided in Morrowind, where they do get block as a skill, but in Oblivion they are highly weapon, strength and mobility focused, without any supporting defensive skills to their armor and healing magic.

Besides my 'Sauron's Mace' that I made (Ebony with Fear/Fire enchantment) never. Don't like the look of any maces besides Ebony. Same for battleaxes, actually. When I'm at the stage of the game where Ebony's more common, I switch out the sword for a nice Ebony Battleaxe. :D

well, my race is bosmer for my main cleric, cause of a habit i picked up and any race will do depending on role-play obvoiusly. As for others, I use Restoration, Destruction (Fire only), illusion (mostly the calm series), and alteration along side, either robes with light armor boots and gauntlets, but full heavy armor is more D&D style. I also use a mace and shield (light if first set up, heavy if obviously all heavy)

It is a fun, and rewarding and allows for some neat RP.

The Oblivion classes, are IMO, not indicitive of how the classes are like in TES lore. Oblivion Battle-mage did not have heavy armor as a major, but they still wear heavy armor and the spellsword went from light armor to heavy armor in the switch.

Made a character recently, Mace and Crossbow. Like the Dawnguard, but not really of Dawnguard. [just activated the quest to get their gear and run off, hahahaa]

And not every mace is the Daedric one. I'm not saying anything is wrong with it, as I don't care whether it makes sense or not. It's just hilariously fun.

Not if you dual wield them and have the proper perks, my Orc berserker dual wields 2 maces of Molag Bal and it's epic badassery on a level that no other weapon can touch. I also have a female Orc who uses a mace with a shield which complement each other beautifully as the stagger from the shield bash balances the slow swing speed or simply blocking then countering with the mace works well....this is how I recently got into the sword n board style.

Is it me or do maces just feel right in an Orcs hand?
