Who are the "good guys" in the Mojave?

Post » Sun Dec 11, 2011 9:23 am

I intentionally did not include groups like Van Graffs, Bright Brotherhood, or the Casino factions. They're generally too small to do anything in the game, or in some cases, don't even survive until the end of the game.

The NCR is expanding and taking over every community it finds, which is very imperialistic. They also did the whole massacre at Bittersprings. There are a whole bunch of minor things as well that disillusioned me with the NCR, even though I helped create it in FO1 and 2.

Caesar's Legion is surprisingly less evil than I thought. Yes, Caesar is enslaving entire populations, but he's doing it with the intention of bringing civilization back to the wastelands. He also instills honor and loyalty in his legion, even though women are no more than property. Many modern countries went through painful growth as the Legion is going through, and Caesar knows this. For all its faults, the Legion has many redeeming qualities.

Mr House... what can I say about him.

The Brotherhood has always been extremely secretive and xenophobic. Yes, they're the heroes in FO1, 3, tactics, and BoS, but it seems like every game you deal mostly with splinter factions with radical ideas rather than the mainstream Brotherhood, as represented by the Head Paladin in FO:NV.

The Great Khans make drugs and sell it. They're criminals that have suffered a terrible tragedy and are being pushed around by the Legion and NCR. I felt sympathy for them after thinking they were no better than the Jackals and Vipers for a better part of the game. But still, I can't quite get behind them.

The Boomers are awesome, but instead of helping out the people of the Mojave, they shell them with howitzers and missile launchers. Yeah... no.

The State of Utobitha is supposed to be a haven for super mutants and nightkin, and they warn humans to stay away due to the radiation... but they shoot on sight.

The Powder Gangers were put through hell in a NCR correctional facility, but most of them probably deserved it.

The Crimson Caravan were harmless at first, until I unraveled their secret plans. A greedy corporation.

The Kings are amazingly funny, but honestly they seem like gangsters more than anything. The King himself is a decent guy I guess.

So in the end, for me, besides the Followers of the Apocalypse and Jacobstown, I couldn't find a single faction I actually believed in. Thus, I felt pretty amazing when I found out the last quest in the Yes Man series is called "No Gods, No Masters." If no one else has a worthy vision for the Mojave, I'll impose my own. What are your thoughts? Do you believe in a faction?

Mr House... what can I say about him.
That he's a great business man who is trying to keep The Strip as it was in the glory days. While the NCR and Caesar's Legion are threatening that dream. So he must get rid of them with the help of the Courier.

Where is the "none of the above" choice? Each has their good and bad points. None of them is supposed to be a clear good guy.

This is the 6th post on this topic I believe. :) Good things I guess keep coming back. To answer your question though, the answer is none. Frontier is disappearing were are honest folk going to get a little freedom? :)

Not much of a spoiler, really. You don't know which quest involves them, the history behind the specific characters, and the nature of their appearance. You just know that they are there, somewhere, somehow, in the wasteland.

The followers are pretty cool, and patrolling the Mojave almost makes you wish for a nuclear winter, so I chose NCR and FotA.

That's probably why I LOVE this game. You can pick up on a faction's good, dismiss their evil as necessary or accidents, and get behind them.

The thing about Caesar's Legion is that Caesar's vision of "peace" is the same as the Master's. On a tribal level, it makes sense, and on the whole, Caesar's plan would ultimately bring peace as long as Caesar's death didn't do the same thing that Gaius Julius' death did, in that it fractured the leadership.

As righteous as some of the NCR appear in the Mojave, the fact remains that they're effectively annexing territory and expanding in the same way Caesar's Legion is. I think one of the Remnants really hit the nail on the head when he said that the NCR was conquering with legislation, establishing themselves in a region and claiming that they have legal precedence over occupied land, then using their laws to restrict the actions of locals. In a way, it's even more insidious that Caesar's outright slaughter. With Caesar, you know he's a natural antagonist if you're just a regular farmer in the Mojave, but the NCR slips in and conquers silently, and before you know it, your Brahmin are getting taxed, and your land is now owned by the government.

As far as the Brotherhood goes, they're not good or bad, they're just simply cold. You can't call them selfish really either because their organization is defined by their creed of only the knowledgeable and responsible holding onto technology. If anything they're just belligerent and short sighted, although if I was in the Brotherhood, it would disturb me to know that people like the Van Graffs are selling powerful energy weapons to anyone with the money while the NCR was also sitting upon an orbital weapon. Those are the things the Brotherhood should purge; careless users and purveyors of advanced technology.

The Followers and Jacobstown are probably the only truly good factions.

As for Caesar's Legion, you have to remember that it was created from raiders and tribals. You can't really compare it to NCR. Not only has NCR been around for almost 100 years, it was created by former Vault Dwellers and formed from towns that had a lot of skilled and educated people. The Legion has only been around for 30 years and all of its members are illiterate hunter gatherers. Plus many of the towns that NCR traded with like Vault City and San Francisco are educated and technologically advanced. The Legion would likely go through major changes once it begins to assimilate technologically advanced settlements with educated populations.

I don't trust Followers. They must have some hidden agenda.

I find it annoying you can't really help all factions in their quests ..
For example, I would be happy to help the NCR / Caesar's Legion with their quests as long as they don't make you kill members of the other faction. After doing some quests in the forlorn hope camp (none making me kill CL troopers) the NCR suddenly think I want to fight on their side :( they should have made a dialogue option there which allows you to walk away from the conflict or something ..

There are no good guys. There's only me, getting what I want, and a pile of corpses from those who got in the way.

And somehow I've managed to become "Accepted" by both the NCR and Legion at the same time. So much the sweeter when I betray them both.

You can walk away at any time. Just stop doing their quests. There's four endgame quest arcs, and two of them don't have you taking either the NCR's or Legion's sides.

I guess the FOllowers of the Apocalypse, but they are too soft for combat, so I really wouldn't entrust the fate of the Mojave to them. Even Fiends would massacre those softies!

I have a serious problem with the leadership of the NCR but because they're the only ones with the resources to fend off Caesar's Legion, I have to go with them. The soldiers care about what they are doing and want to protect and help people. Like I said, it's the leadership that should be changed. There's a new Fallout story there..... :)

The Followers and the Kings are the only "good" factions. I'm tempted to say Boomers, too, but they have expressed a marked desire to bomb the wasteland to ashes with their new plane.
