So, who's disappointed with how Bethesda will handle DLC?

Post » Mon May 16, 2011 1:10 am

Okay, so I'm really upset with Bethesda's choice to make Smaller Fallout 3 style DLCs. They didn't feel like really good Addons to add to the game(Save for Broken steel), kinda like Quest lines with mediocre new areas. The items were cool though.

Personally I want the return of real expansions. I want to be introduced to new and interesting new lands, a new main quest and side quests, and a plethora of new items. Not Something a Modder can do in a week that I can download for free. I really hope that they change their mind about this.

Anyone else agree?

I don't hate the F3/NV DLC, but another Shivering Isles would be better than ten F3 DLC's. Oh well, at least it's better than horse armor.

The Fallout DLC's really fail to capture the "scope" and openness of the game

I'll wait until I play the first DLC and see how it turns out. I'm sure it will be great whatever route they go.

I'm not happy about this decision but BGS is still the best Video Game Developer out there so they'll come up with something. Hopefully someone will get some common sense and change their mind but I doubt it money talks unfortunately. :shakehead: :shakehead: :shakehead:

I never actually played the FO3 dlc, so I can't say much qualitatively about how they compare to something like Bloodmoon, Tribunal, or SI. Their quantitative numbers are a lot lower, though. The expansions have more mapped locations, more quests, more NPCs, usually more items, more new creatures, etc. And they certainly have a more meaningful and important central storyline. So I'd prefer expansions, even though I can understand how smaller DLC works in their system. I hope they can release a few good chunks of DLC and then maybe surprise us with something bigger.

Isn't a bit early to already be disappointed? Fallout is Fallout is Fallout, Skyrim is an Elder Scrolls game, there is a difference.

Skyrim is going to be huge, and you're complaining about the DLC?
How many other games out there get as much and as long DLC as Beth games do?
Just because they aren't going to be 50+ hours doesn't mean they won't be as good.

Chances are people will put hundreds of hours into the core game. Most of us won't even notice the lack of crazy huge expansions.

I would, Shivering Isles added 40 more hours easily onto my file.

Maybe we'll get some smaller things for DLC in Skyrim like in Fallout, but I still bet they'll make at least one massive add-on. From what I gathered the "Fallout" style DLC will be replacing smaller things like horse armor and the like.

A bit disapointed, but no surprised.

Like Pete said, making a full expansion takes too much time and you're better off releasing DLCs while the game is still played by a maximum of people. Also, a steady flow of DLC releases make gamers keep their game instead of trading it, which means less people will be able to buy a pre-owned copy.

It's a bit sad but I don't think we'll be seeing full expansions again

Nobody is disappointed with the size of the main game. But expansions do very much add to the experience; they become intricately attached to the original game. I outright cannot picture starting playing Morrowind without experiencing dark brotherhood assassins constantly and without hearing about solstheim, without journeying to Mournhold to finish off the subplot of the Tribunal and to sail to Solstheim to explore the new frontier. Those expansions are just as much Morrowind to me as Morrowind itself.

The same can be said of SI and Oblivion. Oblivion simply is not Oblivion without Sheogorath's realm.

Now, it's true that if we get no expansions for Skyrim, we won't know specifically what we're missing, and we'll have nothing to attach to the game, but at the end of the day, that's still a vacancy, something that we'll all be yearning for.

I'm very disappointed how they are going to be handling it.
I'm one for big expansions, not small DLC's that I have to keep downloading and buying. I want to play Skyrim, not Halo where I constantly download map packs. That's annoying and overly costly.

So. Does anybody know with any certainty how they're going to handle it? Or is this a judge without the facts kind of deal?

Several times they've stated that there will indeed be no big expansions. only DLCs ranging in size from Fallout 3's to Knights of the Nine.

I know what you mean...

Fallout 3 isn't the same without the help signal from the outcasts, the better ending, the ship to Maryland, and the alien signal...

...wait a second...

This isnt Fallout is Fallout.......

This is Bethesda using descisions made in their romp with Fallout to go over in TES, and even before FO3, Oblivion was showing signs of slowing down with regards to this. what kind of explanation is, It took to long? who gives a crap, when did with Time comes Quality stop being true? we waited 5 years for Skyrim and more or less everyone is expecting to deck the halls whats more wait for something assuringly awesome? the DLC a month or 3 months showed how the quality was sagging when they tried that with FO3, bugs, inconsistencies and incompatabilities with mods abound.

Whats the problem taking a little time to create something earth shattering? they didn't Rush Skyrim so why would they DLC's? scrap this DLC stupidity and roll out some quality Expansion packs already.

Have they explicitly stated, "We're not doing expansions, only DLC," or are they merely commenting on the cost- and resource-effectiveness of DLC, insinuating that they'll probably be doing mostly DLC?
If the former, links?
If the latter, though we can expect just DLC, there's always the hope of something bigger.

Listen to the podcast yourself, you will hear Pete hines in regards to expansion packs, and how they aren't doing those, and are shining more to DLC's ala FO3

In an old interview that I don't feel like finding, and the recent OXM interview, which is on the first page and don't feel like lining.

they have a point, I bet they make more money doing dlcs over an expansion. IN the time it takes to make one expansion they might make 3 dlc packs or more.

Now yes i would love to have a shivering ilses expansion as a send off, but two or three point lookouts might make up for it

Because while working on Skyrim, they were focused on Skyrim. When Skyrim is done, they will focus on something new (probably Fallout 4) instead of Skyrim expansions.

they made FO3.....Shiv Ilse Kotn..., Fo3's DLC's....etc etc....while Skyrim was around...of course not in full throttle development mode...but the point is clear.

I think there absolutely needs to be at least one expansion. I'd personally like to take a boat to Solsthiem again in Skyrim as an expansion and see some Vvardenfell refugees. DLC as a whole, I think Oblivion got it almost right. Just needed to focus a bit less on special housing.

Nobody is disappointed with the size of the main game. But expansions do very much add to the experience; they become intricately attached to the original game. I outright cannot picture starting playing Morrowind without experiencing dark brotherhood assassins constantly and without hearing about solstheim, without journeying to Mournhold to finish off the subplot of the Tribunal and to sail to Solsthiem to explore the new frontier. Those expansions are just as much Morrowind to me as Morrowind itself.

The same can be said of SI and Oblivion. Oblivion simply is not Oblivion without Sheogorath's realm.

I'm going to agree completely except for the SI bit. For me it didn't attach itself well enough, not enough reason is given to go there for a sane-minded person. Solsthiem? It was actually attached completely into the exterior game world. Mournhold, like SI, was also only accessible through a special transportation, but tracking down an attempt on your life is about as good of a reason as it gets for somebody to dive face-first into a new place. Plus killing Almalexia and Sotha Sil as a bonus thing for the Neraverine to do makes alot more sense to me then becoming a supposed Daedric Prince of Madness after saving Tamriel from Mehrunes Dagon does.
