Who Else Used The Red Rocket as Their Base?

I'm slowly turning it into my own personal compound. I fenced off the perimeter with the pieces that have barbed wire on top and positioned turrets on the roof with a large prefab house. I might set up a small shack or something for a few settlers but I'm not sure if I want others to live with me yet.

they already have doors in them. You can close them by looking at the frame. They open and close like pocket doors.

It's an excellent idea. In fact, so excellent that one of the Minutemen NPCs whom you escort to Sanctuary actually makes a comment to that effect  Especially since it appears to be the ONLY prewar building my PC has discovered to date which

1. exterior/interior hasn't been damaged by the fallout blast 200 years ago. I'll never understand how this little diner can remain intact (save the windows) with zero damage to the roof or entry points

2. Is the most efficient settlement/home base to defend because of it's small size. Setup a dozen lazer and machine gun turrets around the perimeter and you're very secure from attacks.

3. ACTUALLY HAS WORKING SLIDING DOORS TO INCLUDE THE GARAGE SLIDING DOOR. B) Also like the Sanctuary garage, Beth decided to give you a hand in including light sources. And once again, these were completely unaffected by the nuke blast. The only thing left is to add a dog house for Dogmeat and build a generator. Because best of all

3. Has a Nuka cola fridge and ice box on the outside which means you'll have a handy place to store all of the Nuka and quantum colas you come across in the Wasteland. Will be interesting to see what the modders do with this little joint.

Anyhow, I've setup Sanctuary so that this will be a 100% the 18-20 NPC settlement. And allows my PC & Dogmeat to live in peace and quiet at the RR without any concerns about NPCs who like to borrow his PA. :D The RR is also an ideal place to setup an intermediate trade stop route. If you complete the Minuteman quest to help out another settlement, you'll get the ability to setup a trade route between the two. This allows you to set the RR as a trade stop along the way. B)

I'm using Red Rocket as my sole place for myself and Dogmeat. I can see this place being ours for the duration of the game. No settlement, just me and my dawg. Small, easily manageable and convenient.

My first character used the RR and was quite happy just using the garage without adding any other structures. I put a bed in near the workstation, and an airline seat that faced outward when the garage door was open for evening sittin'. I also added a water supply by the cooking station, so what else is really needed? It was great!

My second character has restored the original house in Sanctuary as roleplay thing... You know, put the old home back together in case the son turns up and is looking for his roots and so forth. I replaced the bed, but that cranky broad (not Mama Murphy) keeps stealing the bed. I swear, if I come home and find her crashed in my bed ONE more time, I'm gonna shoot her... Anyway, set up a generator and lights, so at night it almost looks like a regular home.

Oh, you poor soul. There is TONS of room. The key is to build UP.

No. Not a single stairway. I've got a shed on the back of the building, a stairway leading to it's roof, (which has a little nest with a turret in it), and then a second half stair to the roof. It is all very smooth and looks well-constructed. I'm like you, I don't like floating stuff that looks unsupported. It took 3 test builds to construct a roof access point that looked GOOD and functioned great for NPC companions like Dogmeat. But with access, I've been able to do incredible stuff on the roof of that building.

*Surprise Face* Well what do you know... goes to show how easily something can be missed in this game! Explains why the dog was giving me funny looks...

Thanks for the tip!

I'm crashed currently at the Red Rocket while I'm scouting more permanent lodgings. Two more levels, and I'll be able to create crafting stations which means the sky's the limit in terms of my character's "Forever Home". (He won't - can't - stay in Sanctuary.)

One of my characters is using it as his base. Just him and Dogmeat. He might construct a separate shake later, to make as his personal home while the station acts as, well, his workstation. It's just gonna be him and Dogmeat.

Couldn't get a stairway to go up far enough to give me access to the roof, so I assumed it was inaccessible. Other posts have indicated how to get up there, but to be honest, I'm not sure if I'll be able to pull it off. I'm not really good at building. Frankly, though, I'm kind of interested in building at the Starlight Drive-in, since it's got so much open area. Not sure I'm even going to do anything with it, but it's something to consider.

Ironically, it is my only "settlement" I am not taking care of. Granted, that is mainly because I wanted to build a full village, otherwise it would be a neat place.

My main base is Starlight Drive In, which is not so far away. I turned the main building into my own base (built several stores upon it), used the console to remove the skeletons, built fortifications around the building area and started adding settlement buildings on what used to be a parking place. I like how it even has a lake in the middle that allows one to have proper water supply. My only criticism is that the area is not flat enough so that makes my buildings float...

I did! Full on market under the overhang. Bunks above the station. It's been working well for since attackers only attack from the road. Super easy to defend.

Just one thing.

Ol Painless.

It's not from the Pitt DLC. It's from the base game. You find it at the Republic of Dave.

I'd think that someone that has put enough time into the game to get to Lvl 100+ mere days after the games release would have at least gotten something as trivial as that right. Unless you're bsing us...

You can assign beds the same way you assign jobs to settlers. No need to shoot the poor woman.

Yeah. Activate the settler in question, and then go to the bed you want them to sleep in and activate it. They'll use that bed from now on. The same thing applies to jobs. Some things only contribute to the settlement's stats if a person is assigned to it. Sometimes they'll take over things themselves, but it's probably better to assign them manually, just in case.

Currently using Red Rocket, although I may move eventually. Still, it is a nice place when you're not into living in the "settlements".

Re: settler assignments: I've tried to assign people to the guard posts and the like. They pull out guns and go over there once, then leave and walked around with guns still drawn, but never returned to the actual guardposts. Ever. And when I came back after being away a while, they didn't have guns drawn anymore either. I gave up on making settlers do anything. They just wander aimlessly and sleep and sit in chairs. :glare:

Wow, lots of good points! You're more into the settlement aspect than I am. I'm making my little fortress of solitude. I did send Dogmeat back there to be my guard dog and built him a doghouse.

just seemed to small a surface area for me.

i use sanctuary as my main base with supply lines going to a few places.

but that doesnt mean its always going to be that way.

when i find somewhere more central i might move my main base down there.

Just fyi, there's no need for a universal resource box. If you connect your settlements, all of the workshop contents from all workshops are accessible from any individual settlement workshop. The settlement connection is the universal resource box, to all intents and purposes.

Is it worth building up the castle since apparently it is possible for the enemies spawn inside your settlement/base area.
