Who is going to buy the Strategy guide?

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 5:16 pm

Strategy guide, made by the makers of the game.

Like Gizmo stated: the devs do NOT make the strat guide... BUT: professional game guide writers who work WITH the developers do write the guides. These guys write dozens of guides (iirc Bethblog linked an interview with the longhair who wrote the FO3 guide before it released, and he had written 30+ guides) and for the few inaccuracies they end up putting in (many are using a beta build to write from) you can download PDF printable inserts for your guide to keep it up to date.

Everyone that's saying :INTERNET is right, it's certainly a good way to get the info... but I like a book when I am actively playing the game.... Something about having the weight of it in your lap, mabye little sticky tabs to organize it... call me old fashioned, but I'd rather go through a game guide than try to find the correct youtube walkthrough (1 of 65)...

Nope, I dont usually read them, but anything I need is a Alt-Tab away when in game.

But Fallout 3 crashes with Alt-Tab... :P

But with Steam, in-game browser is a Shift-Tab away.

1. That was me. :cryvaultboy:

2. I've never looked at the Fallout 3 guide...sounds nice. Still, though, I don't like guides. They make the experience feel less organic to me...I'd rather go it alone even if that means I miss things. That's what second playthroughs are for, right? :P

The Vault is about 50X better than any strategy guide. Plus it's free.

You guys are right. There is something about holding it in your hands that can't be explained. Also when you are on the crapper, it's good reading material. Yes there is a few times I spoiled something for myself, but there is no one to blame but myself.

Somet times, I find more spoilers on the forums than I do in the strategy guide. Too many people leave spoilers in the general too many times, some on purpose some by accident. At least with the Strat guide, me and only me is to blame if I read a spoiler. But there is so much to it than just reading how to do quests.

Also it's great to read when you are on the crapper. :fallout:

I liked the map the FO3 one had, and FO3 crashes on alt-tab, so I need it when I want to look up something quickly. (Assuming NV will crash on alt-tab like FO3)

I doubt it. Strategy guides are pretty much outdated when we have the internet and YouTube with users such as Orcidea. Not to mention, the Fallout Wiki.

I felt the same way at first. Then I played Fallout 3 and after 1 year plus the DLC's, I still didn't find everything in the game. Going back and forth the computer and printing out tips wasn't easy, so when they brought out the "Game of the Year" Fallout 3 Guide Book, I bought it and still find it a big help and awesome collector's item. It features all the characters, pictures of all the armor, weapons, descriptions, hidden areas, tips and more. There's stuff in there I wouldn't have even thought of had I only checked online.

I'll definitely buy the Game of the Year "Fallout New Vegas" edition.

Even if it does you could always use the in-game Steam overlay.

I preordered the ce guide because I found the fallot 3 guide very helpful. I just don't like having to leave my game and reloading to find something stupid.

While I would never buy a stagey guide for game tips (as the dead horse attests its all online) I can understand wanting a souvenir book about Fallout and if it comes with cool maps and info about the game cool too, I would like lots of stories/back-story and art in the book, rather than spoilers which I can find online after I beat the game, again I understand wanting a book to read about the game but thats what the collector’s edition with the comic and art stuff is for and why I’m buying the collectors edition and not the strategy guide.

Never bothered with the book for FO3. I've looked up some things on the wiki, but after 6+ playthroughs I still don't know where half the bobbles and unique weapons are. :D

(It's more fun to stumble across stuff like that, you know?)

So I won't be getting the FO:NV book, either.

(It's an interesting contrast to how I play normally-much-linear console JRPGs.... one play without hints to get the best story impact, then one play with the book to get 100% completion.)

Oops, sorry Nerd.

It's your avatar that through me off.... I miss your gangster looking dude.... The one you have now looks like one Gizmo used for awhile....
It's worse that I looked at your post a half a dozen times thinking: Duh... Gizmo seems kinda dull today... Before I finally realized it was you.

No no.... I'm not saying YOU'RE dull... just that, that wouldn't have been a really with-it response if that actually had been Gizmo.... :foodndrink:

Just some mask I found in a train station restroom next to a hole in the wall. Weird.

Nope. On my first playthrough, I want to play completely using my own mind, and after that, I can find everything else using the Wiki.
