Who is going to buy the Strategy guide?

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 9:24 pm

I always tried to buy the strategy guides for all TES games. I never did for Fallout 3 because the first time I saw it, I thought it was horrible. Well now I saw the collectores edtion of Fallout 3, and it looked amazing. I never got it since I played to much F3 so didnt need it. I am thinking of getting it if it's the same quality as the F3 GotY edtion strategy guide.

Yes I know we have the internet and the Bethesda forums to talk if we are stuck. We also have the Falloutwiki, The Vault as well, so would make the Strategy guide moot. But instead of buying the Collectores edtion, which I know my son will just loose, I think I will get the Strat guide. It will also help him when he is in his room playing and he dosn't have an internet connection and he will not bug me to go on the internet all the time, and go to youtube to see all the help he needs. (Smart little monkey he is. I never even thought of using youtube for help, but since there is lots of big words he can't read yet, he uses youtube. LOL)

I also like to have a book in my hands as well. I just don't have as much enjoyment reading PDF's on the computer so always prefer DTF. (Dead Tree Format)

So what are you guys and gals going to do and why.

I love the strategy guides, though I don't often use them to actually play the game as that would be too easy. But once I've cleared everything out a few times, I find the maps are great for finding areas I've missed repeatedly or picking up the obscure quest that I missed. When they include wall maps I think those are cool and hang them up at least as long as I play.

If nothing else it supports the franchise, and I consider that a good thing.

100% yes... I've always regretted not buying the FO3 guide when it was still available in stores...

I doubt it. Strategy guides are pretty much outdated when we have the internet and YouTube with users such as Orcidea. Not to mention, the Fallout Wiki.

I find the Wikia has enough user input, that a physical stradegy guide wouldn't really be anymore help. Plus I never buy strategy guides anyway.

You're not missing anything. A lot of the info is wrong, and the wiki is more accurate.

Anyway, I won't be buying the guide. The wiki and here are fine.

That might be the only reason I won't apply for a job at Gamestop, I wouldn't want to have to talk every other [censored] that comes in the door they should buy a strat guide for their game, when all the info in said strat guide will be on the internet within days.

Why? We have the wiki. Unless you don't have the internet. Besides, I don't want to look at any guide. I want to discover stuff on my own...

I like to hold the pages in mah hands though.... You can get addendums from most of the publishers (like Prima) too, since like you pointed out, the info can be out of date when published... I'm still with Spectre though.. It just feels good, in an unexplainable way (not elitist) to have the guide... i'm more likely to buy the guide than the Collectors edition of the game.

The only reason I would want to buy it is so that I could show off that I have everything for New Vegas.

im glad someone understands.

i would like to see them have a little bit of bonus content (maybe an armor or gun) with the guide.

ya know give people more incentive to get it.

even if i do get it i will probbably still use the vault.

For you, go for it. Get your kid out of your hair for a minutes and you like to read books, also its nice to have pics of the game aswell and be on top of the info before its even posted later on.

For me no, it ruins the game for me.

Strategy guide, made by the makers of the game.

I don't think that's true. I'm pretty sure it's made by a 3rd-party that has a consultant contact with the developer. Every strategy guide I've ever seen has been full of mistakes.

Fallout wiki, edited by anyone.

Given the obsession with canon and facts that permeates the Fallout community I'd trust that "anyone" more than I'd trust some disinterested junior editor charged with managing the compilation of the strategy guide. Just sayin'.

Anyway, I don't do strategy guides. I don't even look things up on the web unless I'm really stuck or until I'm done exploring on my own. I don't want to know too much ahead of time.

I'll get the guide when i get the game since i think you get a discount on the guide when you buy it with the game and since i don't and never will trust the wiki or anything else that allows any moron to post wrong info after just signing in or logging on, that and the wiring in my house is garbage so having my PS3, air con, and computer on at the same time would most likely cause the power to go out.

I always buy the guides for big open world games.. I just don't like missing anything. I want to see and do everything on first play through. I don't read the quests but the maps are invaluable. Obviously the guide helps with locating treasures I wouldn't want to miss out on. I have a lot of trouble with open world games without a guide because I tend to wander around and lose track of where I am in the game without them.

BTW in defense of the Fallout 3 guide book, it's the best book I've ever seen. There was only one mistake out of the whole thing, and it's very minor. :fallout:

Edit: Best STRATEGY book I've seen
