Who's Going To Have A Server?

Post » Tue Sep 28, 2010 4:52 am

The title says it all!

I'm hoping to be able to afford renting a server from a provider (mostly cause I'm not tech savvy enough to just run my own), so that I can start a new community group.

Is anyone else planning on getting a server?

If you're looking for a good Server Provider, then I'd recommend either Nuclear Fallout (http://www.nfoservers.com/) Or GameServers (http://www.gameservers.com/). NFO is the better choice, but they are more expensive. Cash is really tight for me and my family right now, so I cannot afford to donate or pay for a server, as much as I'd like to. However if you do start a community and are based in the West Coast of the US, I'd like to be an admin for your server. I'm fairly experienced in administration.

If I was on the west coast, I'd love to have you! Unfortunately I'm midwest based. :sadvaultboy:

Oh, Midwest is fine for me. I live in the West Coast so my only major issue is latency. Since Brink is supposed to have amazing netcode, I could probably play comfortably if you pick a good server location. I get around 40 ping on average in Washington, 70 ping in California, and 80 - 100 ping in Chicago. All of those acceptable for me, I just don't want to play on an East Coast server with 120+ ping. That would really svck. :/

yeah, I'm hoping for a Chicago based server. Though it also depends on the price of the servers. I've never actually owned my own server before, just admin'd for some. I know servers for TF2 can get pretty pricey. But if I can get a pretty good group of people going and playing, it would be worth it for sure.

Just a word of warning. I've attempted to start my own communities before. It's impossible to do successfully if you don't have a large group of people to support you. I'd recommend trying to offer a server to a group that already exists, such as that Steam Group for Brink. Also, http://www.gameservers.com/game_servers/brink_servers.php

I also just looked at NFO, apparently they don't offer servers for Brink (Yet, maybe) so it looks like GameServers is your only choice unless you can find a better Server Provider. GameServers and NFO are the only ones I trust but there may be some other good ones as well. GameServers is very inexpensive though in my experience and the quality is decent enough.

It probably matters that the server files haven't been released yet, so they may not put up a price/option for them until they do.

That's a pretty good idea about the community thing. So far I just have a friend of mine that will be playing the game religiously with me and maybe a couple other friends. If I end up with a server, and you have friends who want to play, feel free to invite em in! lol

Since the servers are only going to be 16 people, I imagine there are going to be A LOT of servers going.

I think you can get more than one client running per server, if that matters.

Exactly. It's also a good choice to start a community for Brink now, rather than later. This is because people will be looking for servers to regulate. By starting a community now, you have a better chance of attracting players and thus a better chance of being successful in the long run.

And GameServers offers a server pre-order for Brink at $1.29 a month per Public Slot ($20.75 a month for all 16 Players). Oh and by the way, add me on Steam if you'd like to talk more. I see no reason to continue this discussion on the forums as most forum goers here don't seem to care right now. My Steam username is BlackZebra7 (I realize it's very stupid sounding, I made it a long time ago :P)

That's a pretty insane deal. I'll check that out.

I know for a fact plenty of clans from Bad Company 2, Killing Floor, CoD 4 and Black Ops are going to have servers. PC is going to be fine. Damn fine.

Note: no GSP's offer Brink servers yet, I'm pretty sure SD will tell us when the files are out. I'd be careful with preorders, the prices are likely to change.

Side Note: I'm planning on getting one USWest server going for http://steamcommunity.com/groups/brinkforumspcgamers, and I think other members are planning on getting em for other regions. Look us up whenever servers are ready :foodndrink:

Perhaps Husemann would be willing to offer his Saint Louis server for that group? That would certainly help us with the issue of not having enough players to keep the server filled. I think it's a fair deal since communities always do better when they offer multiple servers to play on, especially if those servers are in multiple locations.
