Contact all your finacial people and close your accounts. The rest is up to how much insurance you have, but your probably screwed for a lot of it. Do damage control and then buy a big dog so it doesnt happen again.

This, except replace big dog with laser defence system. You gotta upgrade these days man.

I've never been robbed, although several family members have. It's got to svck.

Also, I'm sure there is some sort of witty one liner I can make from the thread title, but I can't think of one right now...

By the way, I'm not an expert, but this sounds like identity theft if they have your birth certificate, social security etc. I'd do something very fast.

Google what to do if your identity has been stolen. If they have all that info, then, like FateOrFatality said, you need to do something very fast. The very first thing you should do is notify your bank.

Usually, when you are robbed, the person is someone you know. Maybe not directly, but they had a reason to rob YOUR place; IE they knew you had good stuff, and knew you would be out then.

Who have you had over lately? Anyone you don't know very well? Have a friend over, and that friend brought a "guest" who is totally cool, so no worries? It can often be these people. When someone robs a place, it's usually not random.

[] Put stops on your bank immediately. Notify your licencing agency, the hardest will be stopping accounts and cards that could be started with your SSN. Notify work just because, and you are likely to have a much busier schedule managing all this stuff.

First thing is contact your bank. Once you do this you should be covered, at least in Canada you are covered. Call all credit cards, and contact the goverment. Tell them your personal identification was stolen and they should tell you where to report to. I am shocked the police are doing nothing. They of all poeple should care about stolen identity. This speaks volumes of your police force, since they should be helping you or at least directing you where to go to report what is stolen. Also you need a case number to tell the insurance company if you need to claim anything.

Contact City Hall, I don't think they can help you, but, they should direct you where to go to report what to whom. Good luck.

If all else fails, contact Homeland Security if you in the US. They would want to know about stolen I.D. at least.

Indeed. We don't pay taxes so they can sit on their asses. no wonder they are laying off cops to save money...

On friday afternoon, in a very good hotel in Accra, I was not really robbed more stolen. But it was annoying. My phone was on charge, in my back while we were wrapping up the conclusion of a conference. Some guys from the hotel (who ???) unplugged the phone and stole it. It was a nice HTC HD2 and I did not install the GPS tracker ! I am angry because of the pictures which were inside, I lost most of them.

Some years ago, kids of 15-17 in the streets of Douala in Cameroun tried to steal me. I beat one of them and then ran away. Some security guards saw the trouble and pursued them. I kept my phone and all my goods.

Years ago, my car was stolen in France. We recovered it almost intact 3-4 days later.

The cops wont help you?! Where the heck do you live? In my town the cops are so bored doing paper work in the station all the time when something like this actually comes up they grab their rifles and go on a man hunt :P no, but when I lived at my grandparents my dad's car got broken into at night and he lost a bunch of assorted paper work that I dont know if it even had any value, I think they were just stupid kids.

As for what can actually help you, like others have said, call and close any accounts that have had paperwork stolen and put a sign on you door that reads "theres a grenade bouqet on the other side of this door" or something like that  if they ever played fallout I'm pretty sure they would high tail it out of there.

This post raises a variety of questions. Why have people tried to steal you twice, and how do you charge a phone from your back?

My car has been broken into a few times. Nothing of real value was stolen and nothing was damaged.

But I'd still like to meet that [censored] face to face and see what happens...

@op: That really svcks man. I hope you will be allright.

What do you mean the police can't help you??? They're supposed to open up a case.

When my parents house was robbed the police came over, identified the route of entry(which was obvious. a broken kitchen window) and did a half-assed job dusting for prints. They said that if they heard anything, they would contact my mom and step-dad.

Because I wasn't on very good terms with my parents at the time, they thought I had something to do with it. After giving my alibi to the police, I went on a little "investigation" of my own. It turns out I knew who had robbed my parents, they were supposedly a "friend" of mine(a lot of drama was going on at the time, I'm not going into details). Basically, because I knew the police would do nothing(they need a warrant to search a house, a warrant from a judge who's gone over the evidence with the investigators, and there was no evidence) I got my most trusted friends together, among other people, went to their house and took my parents stuff back(HDTV, jewelry, xbox 360, etc.) myself. Not to mention other, more punishing things done to the ones responsible....

Anyway, what I'm trying to get at is no one is going to pick a random house and say "that's the one right there. let's do this." and go and rob it. I would put money down that the person lives on your street or knows you in some way. They knew your routine and waited for you to leave and did the job before you could get back. Trust me, I know from experience. I wasn't the greatest kid when I was growing up....

So what you need to do is try and keep an eye and ear out for anyone suspicious, people watching you from windows, cars etc, ask neighbors if they saw anything, maybe even put up some signs about what's missing. How I found out who did it was by asking around about HDTV's for sale and Xbox 360's. one guy slipped his tongue, and before the day was done I had my parents stuff back. Just ask around the neighbourhood, give some teenagers like 10 bucks and tell them to ask their friends and if they find out more you'll reward them. look on classified websites, eBay, anything at all you can think of, pawn shops, used electronic stores, etc.

I hope you have some luck, oh, and don't count on the police to do anything....

edit: you may also want to invest in a security system. even just putting up a security companies sign like ADT in your frontyard will keep robbers away. lightning does strike twice in the same place.

Edit: Stolen Birth Certificate? Call the Social Security Administration Immediately. NOW. ALso contact the local drivers liscense or state ID department.
The cops here usually have a heavy robbery load, but it is no excuse not to refer you to the department which handles indentity theft. Identity theft is a federal offense. IT's [censored] they did nothing for you. Did you tell them your birth certificate was stolen?
Call your bank, credit card companies, people you have accounts or do business with, the Social Security Adminstration, Health and Homeowners insurance and alert them to your predicament. You would be suprised what channels theives can use to rob you of your identity.
File a report with the police, and get the badge numbers and names of the officers. Your homeowers or renters policy may cover material losses from theft, and some cover certain monetary amounts for identity theft.
I removed the mp3 player from the music service, and reoported it stolen.
Good luck, sorry to hear that happened to you.

My daughter left the car unlocked twice. First time, cb radio was stolen. Second time, an mp3, it's car charger, from the dash cubby, and from the cooler, a six pack of Jones Diet Black Cherry cola. We also had power tools stolen from the garage during a remodel, but it turned out to be an unsavory relative who had assisted. He came over, lifted them, and pawned them. He's currently incarcerated in a mental institiution for life, on unrelated charges.

FateorFatality, your pseudo answers your questions ! I was charging the phone just near me, when I say in my back, it means I was not facing it at this moment, discussing with a client. I never saw someone as bold as that for stealing phone. I was 1 m from my phone... I could have seen him.
The security situation in most african countries is not really up to european standard so being robbed is a kind of standard. Armed robbers are common. There is a small girl at home presently whose mother was attacked by armed robbers recently. Apart from what they did to the mum (no details), they took a gun and put it in the mouth of the girl to force the mum to give all the money. That sets a standard...

Never been robbed myself but a few weeks before we moved into my stepdad's house he was robbed. It was a half arsed job really, from what we could tell the guy got in through his bedroom window, stole everything of value from the bedside table (a watch, small silver necklace and a wallet) then just took the playstation from downstairs. We figured it was just an addict looking to get stuff to pawn for drugs as we live near a bad area of town. Never had any problems since we moved in though.

I got most of my stuff stolen a few years back. I lived in a small community, so the police already had a pretty good idea who did it. They did manage to find them because they were able to trace my laptops id signature. Turns out they had used it to make... well, advlt entertainment.

I got some insurance instead though and bought a better computer.
