Who is looking forward to perks?

Post » Fri Jul 01, 2011 7:04 am

The perks in Skyrim are not like perks of Fallout. They are more like Talent trees.

This. When I saw the blocking tree, I thought "Oh, cool, looks like a talent tree system". Like WoW or similar.

Edit: Proof read it and still had a typo :P

I was hoping for perks before the first GI article came out about SR, I was very happy to see them in the game.

I am looking forward, but I hope they are not ALL skill related though.
+5 to a weapon damage is not that cool. I want something that I can see and feel. I want some "fun" perks like the ones in FO3 too.

Amen, I like when you feel that reward kick in. It seems like that's what they're going for, +5 style perks, as well as new skills and actions. I wouldn't want it to the extent of FO3, but I think they already said its not THAT crazy.

I'm looking forward to them. It was hard to choose because there were so many good ones in the Fallout games but that helps a lot with replayability. Depending on the build, different perks can be taken and it adds more to the game.

Well lets have a look at the one tree we have seen in nearly it's entirety.

Block Perk Tree

After looking at that do think it will be all "+%" for all of the skills?

Yes I do realize not all are like that (that's why I said more abilities etc) but I would have preferred if perks just added abilities and left attributes to do what they did also instead of using perks for both. I think it would create even more varied and deeper characters.

Not a big fan of perks personally... but i'll wait and see how they're implemented. If they're gimmicky, I won't like them. Right now though I can't really say whether i'm happy about them or not.
Same here. So far its not looking good with the Bleeding perk for axes, and the loss of stats in favor of perk talents.

im not judging you but I really dont understand how someone couldnt like the perks... there a reward for your hard work and make life easier.. just saying...
I play RPG's to observe the PC's life in their situation. My 'hard work' is never rewarded in TES or FO3, nor is that an objective for me; and the games are easy enough to begin with ~perks that make them easier (like... Grim Reaper Sprint for example), are just annoying and have nothing to do with the character IMO.

I know, and that is part of why I like it. If there are 5 ranks of +5% damage, you can get +25% damage,

.. and then folks will complain the game is too easy-nerfed-consolized :)

Personally, I don't like perks in a game like this.

Yes I think perks can have their place in TES and could be useful in their own right for creating a fun game I'm just not so sure the best way to use them is as a replacement for attributes.

They remind me of D&D's feats. And yeah, I am.

I just would hope (or would like) that they not appear as (essentially) merit badges; where one PC can inflict axe wounds that bleed, while another cannot, and its simply for having the 'token', rather than an appreciable amount of commitment put into improving the PC's skill with an axe.

They remind me of D&D's feats. And yeah, I am.
They do (and none of the synonyms for 'Feats' are cool sounding ~and most don't apply to this use.)

It is telling though... A feat is a personal accomplishment, while a Perk is basically a free gift.

Yeah, I'm definitely a fan of the perks. I'm looking forward to learning more about what perks are available, but I can wait until I play the game if no information is released.

Definitely looking forward to trying something new, but I'd have hoped for more than 280 honestly. If we can pick up 50 per play through I'd like to be able to pick around 10% of the totals, I'd like 500 perks :hehe:

Two things that make perks great for skyrim:

1. Even characters with the same skill level can have varying perks so two characters could have say 100 block skill but one was perked out for defence while the other offence. The great thing about this as well is you could create two characters and use the exact same skills but have them turn out completely different from each other in how they use those skills.

2. You now cannot be the 'master' at everything, unlike oblivion and morrowind where if you tried you could become master of every skill. Now even if you hit 100 with every skill you cannot truely master them as you do not have enough perk points to finish all the skill trees.

So yeah, I'm liking the idea of perks so far :D

It is a mixed bag for me. I like the idea of perks, but the ones shown on the shield tree felt well lame. Disarming bash seems cool, you learned a new trick. But improving how much damage you block is what improving the skill should be doing. It is not terribad, but I am not a fan of perks that mimic skill advancement. I can justify it by saying dude X is learning tricks with his block skill, dude Y is focusing on the fundamentals, but it still seems lame.

Someone with full points into that shield tree is gonna end up very different than someone without it.

I liked the examples so far.

...and did you notice the complexity of some of those other trees? 4, 5 and 6 branches.

So far, I have very little to complain about with this game, and perks aren't one of them. They add an extra element to leveling up, and I think they're a nice way to balance the reduced number of skills.

Stylistically, they're obviously reminiscent of the crystarium in FFXIII, which is the only thing about that game that I enjoyed.

It sure looks like that.

BTW, after looking at that diagram, I have lost some of the optimism that I had previously for the game.

Oh no, perks actually do something and they're shaped in trees....

I don't get it what is so depressing in this?

If that is what it says then:
ri·poste
–noun
1. a quick, sharp return in speech or action; counterstroke: a brilliant riposte to an insult.
2. Fencing . a quick thrust given after parrying a lunge.
–verb (used without object)
3. to make a riposte.
4. to reply or retaliate.

It must be a counter attack.
