Who never use fast travel?

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 10:08 am

When I played Oblivion (my first ETS game, I really need to try Morrowind one of these days) I kept using fast travel and telling myself that I was surely missing a lot of wonderful stuff and scenery. This time around I created a dark elf ranger named Black Widow (a noun she earned because of her many use of poison) and I decided not to use any fast travel other than the carriage outside of cities as it is a roleplay mechanism to me (my dark elf does not like riding a horse, don't ask her why :P ). So when not using carriage from town to town I always walk the landscapes of Skyrim looking for unusual sights and wonders.

So just curious here who else never use fast traveling when playing ETS games?

I always fast travel so I can get to a quest, then fast travel back when i'm done. Or when I'm done going through a dungeon have a lot of stuff and want to get back to town to sell stuff

I don't, it's more fun imo that way. I have used the carriages but only sparingly. I am not fond of the horses (wish they had done 1st person horse view) so I walk.

It's tempting, but it just takes too much time, especially when I'm salivating over the thought of plunging into a new dungeon or seeking out a "source of power" at such-and-such location.

I was going to avoid using it, but for some reason I find not fast travelling less agreeable than I did in Oblivion; I'm still keeping it to a minimum, but I can't face not using it at all.

Barely. I'm 25 hours in and I've fast travelled 3 times, mostly for specific reasons.

Never. Didn't use it in FO3 either.

Wandering the land is a large part of the game imho. Why deny yourself that?

Ever since Oblivion, I've never fast-traveled. It can be a pain sometimes, but I've found a lot of really interesting stuff on foot, so it's worth it to me. It honestly never occurred to me to use it outside of towns to pretend to be a "carriage" system. I do miss in Morrowind having to plan out how I was going to make it to a town across the other side of the map. I remember plotting out taking the silt strider to this town, then taking it to another town from there, so I could take the boat to get to this town. Glad to see transportation back in Skyrim.

I dont use fast travel because for the first time it actually makes sense to use the roads now. Back in other TES games, you can cross from A to B without using the roads. So now I am taking advantage of this as you get to run across alot of cool random NPCs or events. For example, I saw Alduin again, robbed a noble, killed some thalmors, etc.

I've stopped using it, but I also used the console to upgrade my horse a bit - 25% faster run speed and essentially unlimited stamina, so I can gallop everywhere (starting to feel sorry for Lydia). It's fun, and feels fast without seeming unrealistic, though it is a little hard on things performance-wise - it forces the game to load and unload cells a lot quicker.

Sometimes if the distance is close enough in an area i know and other times if where i'm going is far away and i really wanna get something done but don't have a great deal of time in real life.

I considered it, but then I read about the way monster scaling works in Skyrim and grew unsure. If you walk everywhere, isn't there the issue that you lock all the regions to their lowest level? And when exactly is this determined? Say, if you pass by a fort, does this affect the mobs inside the building or only the ones outside?

There comes a point where you are fighting how the game was designed, which just leads to frustration and annoyance. I have the compass off, but that just means I have to open the map every 5 seconds because the game is built around you knowing where you're going, so it gives you no specific directions. So I am tempted to turn the compass back on all the time. On topic, I like to only fast travel to towns and between towns, which is basically how Morrowind worked because of the spells they gave you, but Skyrim is designed around fast travel and thus the quests don't care about sending you across the world and back again over and over again.

In short: it's usually better to play games as they were designed.

In Oblivion I never used it (though I had a dimensional Home to teleport to to drop things out of inventory and then teleport back to where I was ) made things more interesting to walk\run everywhere but since the CK is not released yet I've been using Fast travel to go to towns to sell\ drop off items but then usually fast travel back to the location I was at before continuing.

I use it, see no point in not using it, to see the same mountain for the 40th time while I have to travel across the entire country for one quest? Hell no.
Unnecessarily draggin out the game in my opinion.

I wish there was a real "Master" or hardcoe difficulty option in Skyrim which negates all Fast travel and adds item decay (repair) into the game. A "Master" level that does nothing but up hitpoints and damage modifier on npcs is just catering to console players, :whistling:

I used to always use it, and think nothing of it, but I recently stopped using it and the game became much more fun. The scenery really is amazing.

I hadn't used it once until a day ago, when I schlepped about 15 minutes from my breeze house to a cave to realize I left my shield at home. I was toying with spell shield hand axe normal place. I FTed back and ahve used it a few times since. I will start cutting back again. Takes away too much.
