Who the hell is Rune?

Post » Tue Jul 17, 2012 9:32 pm

I recently started a new thief character and upon coming across Rune's dialogue again I realized that I never found any answers in my previous playthroughs. A trip to the Library and search of the UESP didn't turn up anything, either, and the mystery is starting to itch. Does anyone know something that I don't on this matter? Any hidden files in the creation kit or implications that might have been lost on me?

The PC doesn't need to unravel every mystery.

This is true. But the Elder Scroll community has muscled its way through CHIM, the Dwemer and a schizophrenic dragon god. Is the identity of a thief going to be what finally stumps us?

Yes. It's the natural result of having a mystery that doesn't have an answer to begin with.

Yes.

The identity of a random thief is a mystery for its own sake (I'll eat crow when the time comes), as opposed to a deliberate riddle posed to the reader, expounded upon by communicative texts. Chim was always meant to be understood, although I suspect not all of Bethesda was on board with a correct answer to the Dwemer.

You don't believe that there is an answer? You believe the document implying that his parents tried to conceal their identity isn't interesting enough to pursue? You refuse to wonder?

It would be interesting enough to pursue if gamesas had left a trail to follow, but they didn't, and pursuit is impossible.

Forget Rune, what about the origin of Sapphire's name?

Bingo.

Someone listen to this guy, please.

It was an abandoned quest idea. There is no answer to this mystery.

The runes he came with weren't runes at all, but the seeming gibberscript of Cryptese, the secret argot hushed around barrelfires by vamps and brigands in conspiracy in the deep reaches of Eye Lid City, far 'neath the glory of Sunder-Seat, Cyrod.

I was aiming for some kind of lich being involved, because the old Nord wizards used them for enchantments and such. I think.

I like your idea more.

That's why people are so interested though, because it was abandoned and it clearly shows in the game. Heck, ALL the thieves in the cistern that aren't Bryn or Mercer have cut content that shows. It bothers me every time I go through the cistern and that one guys says "I was hoping we could talk, if you had a moment." or something like that.

I guess people just don't like being teased.
