Who think's they'll fix the mage's guild?

Post » Tue May 03, 2011 1:50 am

Let me start by saying i love the elder scrolls series. I played the the originals, i had to replace morrowind 4 times and i still own oblivion on 360, ps3 and pc. I'm only saying that becuase i dont want anyone to think i'm jaded by just the mages guild in oblivion. Dont get me wrong i liked playing through the guilds and all but i think they overlooked or maybe just dumbed it down too much. Mostly the basis of this complaint is that a character with all melee skill and heavy arm, with no magic skills or training AT ALL can complete the mages guild in its entirety with no problems what-so-ever. The only qeust that comes to mind right now that actually requires the use of magic, ( granted, there may be more i'm just not thinking of), gives the player scrolls forthe magic needed. Its not a major complaint, i understand its so a player can get the most out of any character but i think it'd be kewl if the mages guild would actually require a certain level of mastery in magic. Anyone agree or have any other suggestions or am i way off base here?

I agree as well. I thought that it was strange that my Redguard warrior with no magic skill whatsoever could become the head of a guild of spellcasters. It just seemed stange to me.

Well I think pretty much everyone agrees that we want skill requirements to join guilds and to advance in rank.

I'm pretty sure the mages guild will get a big overhaul, especially since the mages guild doesn't exist anymore lol, well it stopped existing after oblivion. Its now replaced with the college of whispers and the synod, but I don't know much about them

EDIT: hey Nihlys welcome the the forums have a http://images.uesp.net//c/c4/Fishystick.jpg

They would need to fix Mages first, and it looks like they're doing that, so I am hopeful.

Yeah, there are many things in OB that i wished were more like MW, but none of them were as Needed as the guild progression. My character on the 360 (while I was saving for a PC) was the head of every guild. The way I entered every combat was,Sneak attack with poisoned Umbra, Burning Fist (custom spell did about 120ish damage, combining all the elemental and damage spell effects), and then just alternate as possible with those two attacks..

Maybe (unlike MW) they should hide the actual requirements in a drop down or something so if you want the suspension of number crunching the person in the guild can say something generic like "you aren't skilled enough in your blade skills yet"

Edit: Welcome! Have a http://images.uesp.net//c/c4/Fishystick.jpg

I love the game, but ya it was kind of rediculous having an orc with a custom build to be melee'n monster with heavy armor be the arch mage with no magical power and somehow everyone in the arcane university was just ok with it,

I agree only for RP purposes, but disagree on the basis that from a gamers perspective, some people just dont care to play a mage type character but want to play all aspects of the game. Meaning, they want to see all the guild/quest content. Also, some people jsut dont care about technicalities like this. They just want to game.

I agree. I think guild progression should return to the Morrowind model where you had to level in certain areas in order to advance.

I have to disagree with you on your gamer's perspective point. To be able to play all aspects of a game requires someone to actually play the game, in this case it would mean focusing on building a magic capable character. What is the point of playing if you don't reach out to the game's experiences? I have never been a fan of games that present no challenge and provide only cheap thrills, fortunately The Elder Scrolls has never been one of those games. Any gamer who just wants to be handed everything should just stick to shooters.

I made a custom fortify magicka spell just to finish that quest, afterwards I found the scrolls... :sadvaultboy:

And yes, magic should be a major component of a magic factions quests. I could see the introduction quests not requiring magic, the mages guild had that order of knights for instance and may use people with no magical skill. But after a certian rank, they should assume you can use some magic...

To my knowledge the disentegration of the Mages Guild happened some time after the Oblivion crisis. It has been 200 years since then and is possible that the Mages Guild was reestablished. Correct me if I'm wrong but we have no subsequent information of the organizations founded from the Mages Guild so they may not even exist anymore.

Not to sound rude, but disagreeing with my post doesnt change the fact that some gamers dont care about technicalilies like having skill requirements to complete guild quests. I personally agree with the OP. :)

If you want to play the MAGES guild, wouldn't it make sense to BE a mage? I hope Skyrim ******slaps anyone that tries that farce in its guilds BUT keeping in line regarding FREEDOM and rp value still make it possible but just a very different experience as compared to using an actual mage character.

Yes we do :D Synod and the college of whispers (apparently a discredited school that was in Cyrodiil all of a sudden has a presense and is well known? when Voice Magic was rare...)

I like that TES haven't thrown rpg aspects out the window like games like fable and such. It was lessened in oblivion, but morrowind was hardcoe, you made a character like you wanted and played like it was created to play,. it was like education in the real world, a person who's trained as a chemist wouldnt know what the hell he's doing as a neurosurgeon.

I think you've made a legitimate point. To complete all of the Mage's Guild quests, you should have to become one hell of a mage. A barbarian for example, should have a REALLY hard time doing anything for the Mage's guild. I think in Oblivion, they were going for a more user-friendly system of quest-lines (with the compass arrows and whatnot), which is good in some ways because it interested a much larger audience, however it's also bad in that true fans prefer a more challenging and realistic experience. They seem to have improved this sort of thing in FO3, as well as in recent interviews about Skyrim.

On a slight side note, i think the splitting of the mages guild is a good idea. I realize its lore based but from a game stand point, in oblivion if you were a fighter type character you could do the dark brotherhood and the fighters guild. Thief characters could also do the dark brotherhood and the thieves guild but mage characters only had the mages guild. (and of course the arena but all character types could do the arena) The introduction of two mage type guilds should give more for a rounded mage to do or prehaps a more RP related choice towards their character (say if one was good and the other was bad though prehaps not quite black and white).

I understand what you're saying, and I think that in the future (i.e. Skyrim) those quests should be more magically-based. And I think that those same quests should actually help you level up in various magic skills, too (Mysticism, Conjuration, Restoration, ect.) What I was more offended about was the fact that I got to Arch-Mage status in Oblivion and all the boring, one-line jerk NPC characters who ignored me or were flippant to me when I was a humble Associate...are still ignoring me or being flippant to me. What are the benfits of being Arch-Mage in Imperial Society if you can't wield some influence and make people kiss your ***? lol :celebration: :shakehead:

I do agree with this it was a bit crazy that I beat the mages guild with an orc warrior whose only magic was basic restoration stuff.

I'd want magic progression but in exchange maybe it could be easier to level magic this time.

i definitely liked how they did it in morrowind where you of course needed to get certain skills to a high enough level before being promoted. hopefully they make it similar in skyrim.
