Who or what is Gary?

Post » Tue Sep 22, 2015 5:35 pm

I was wondering. Who or what is Gary?

I mean, I do remember going into a vault and be attacked by a bunch of these guys that all looked the same, but repeated their name and tried to kill you.

I'm guessing a bunch of mental unstable clones that have cabin fever; went mad and killed a lot of people perhaps?

I think it was a reference to a little known meme, nothing more.

Okay, I found it. He and the 54 of him were failed experiments.

Funny, these guys are every where. I never noticed a dead Gary laying around in the bunker when doing the Operation:Anchorage dlc. But they tried hacking his arm off for his pip boy. That is kind of funny....in a dark sort of way. :D

That dead Gary in the Outcast bunker (Gary 23) is needed to exploit what is probably the best known glitch in Fallout 3.

I seem to recall that it was a meme on the /tg/ board of [censored], this whole Gary army thing. Then again this is something I've heard in 2008 or 2009 and it's something my brother told me (I myself never lurked /tg/) so I could be wrong.

That's exactly right. If you read some of the notes left behind on the terminals, you'll find out that as the experiments to clone Garys kept progressing, they became more and more unstable until they turned violent on anyone in the vault who wasn't a Gary, eventually killing all the other residents.

The part I never understood about Gary and experiments and cloning is that wasn't this all going on in 2077? When the GW started and vaults sealed..... sooo, are the various Garys 200 years old or did these mental psychos continue cloning? And how would guys with the brains of Gary be able to operate this cloning equipment?

I do believe the cloning process was automatic in some way.

But they made 54 and then came this "revolt". If automatic why are there not thousands of Gary, and the power was going to end after 20 years, so, how does cloning equipment work with no power? Oh wait I know, it the classic plot hole.

Becuase the game runs like crap with thousands of NPCs, also, the vault's main power supply was designed to malfunction after 20 years, but it had a backup, and that backup, while unable to fufill all the vualt's needs, could obviously keep the cloning process going.

http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Vault_108

>The main power supply was also scheduled to malfunction after 240 months (20 years while the vault was planned to be sealed for 38), and the back-up power supply was intentionally insufficient to meet the vault's needs.

They would have circumvented that problem by simply naming the Garys 'Gary 155', 'Gary 703', etc. like the zombies in Torment's Sigil.

Congrats, you just made something that you have no idea if it was true, about the power. Where are all the previous Gary bodies? 200 years of clones. Zero evidence it was automated, or that the cloning chamber even had enough if the resources, whatever those may be, to make clones for 200 years. What it is, is poor writing.

The only other way to explain it, if Gary wasn't cloned just some years ago by someone who reinstalled the power which then broke down again or some other rather complicated explanation, is that the clones have very long lifespans.

The automatic clones idea isn't sound as the clones we encounter in the Vault are actually the ones described in the log.

What's interesting about Vault 108 is that the cloning was not part of it's experiment, but more like in Vault 22 simple scientific research.

That wouldn't be unheard of, the Lobotomites in OWB are old as hell, even the original is still around.

The lobotomites at least have technology inside their bodies which would explain it. Test Subject 1 sounds indeed like he's the first Lobotomite. Do we know since when they are created? Is test subject 1 from little yangtze?

Anyway, why would a clone live that long? I agree with the bastrd, it's a plot hole

They won't do that, but at least they could prevent themselves from creating plotholes in Fallout 4.

Maybe they could write their own Fallout bible to explain some things.

Is there more than 54 Gary's ?

I thought I heard something that they were also in New Vegas?

They should. Some of the plot holes in game are so bad, having to go and explain them would almost be an admittance of amateurism, which it is pretty rare for anyone to step up and say "whoops, kinda screwed up here" in any industry.

A FO Bible shouldn't be a fix. I would rather have something like VD Memoirs which gives info on canon events in the games than a Bible.

Remember, dungeons like this are done exclusively by one or two people at most who are level designers not writers. Then again the people who did the writing for the game weren't actually real writers either. - btw this is not some snippy joke about "herp derp [censored] writing" that is actually the truth

Anyhow, I don't think they should even bother with fixing Gary clones, as I've said it's a [censored] reference probably, the kind that ruined Fallout 2.

Agreed. I think that was just something that Bethesda probably planned to throw in at the time, but never intended on going in depth. I think its cool to have mystery's in games and movies, but its what helps formulates a type of reality in the game.

Not everyone knows what happens and I think Bethesda was trying to add that kind of mysterious fun in with the game. I think its best not to know sometimes and keep my own thoughts wondering on the subject. My guess is that they clone the Gary's, they were unstable, they got out of control and murdered everyone. I suppose that's enough for now. But I guess what does make me wonder is what they needed the Gary's for. A weapon? A clone army? DNA signature Power Armor that only Gary Clones can use?

Those are the questions I have. But I suppose only the dev's know.
