Who would have won without the Dragonborn's influence involv

I think the Empire would have won this slugging match. They simply have resources that the Stormcloaks can't match.

Is it because they're such snappy dressers?

Well at the start of the game it seems like the Empire has the upper hand in the war until you come along (if you side with the stormies that is), so I reckon they would eventually win. But... in the end only Alduin would win.

The Thalmor wins without the dragonborn's assistance due to without the dragonborn the war could have gone for a few years thus draining resources away from Empire making it easier for the Dominion to defeat the Empire in the upcoming war. Though I do think the Empire would eventually win over the Stormcloaks, but the Empire would take heavy losses in doing so.

Ranking order from most powerful to least powerful (with regards to Skyrim):

1. Thalmor

2. Empire

3. Stormcloaks

Theres a 10v10 on youtube imperials v stormcloak standard guards, stormcloak win with 5 men left so gamewise there stronger.

In my game i could probally solo the entire thalmor and empire combined especially if i just stood in a doorwar (THIS IS WHERE WE HOLD EM!!) and all that.

lore wise not a clue although i would be inclined to vote whoever the dragon born sided with since he's a beast.

Well, if the Dhovakiin only kills Alduin, and not involves himself in the civil war... The Thalmor win.
This requires a spoiler, but anyone who believes that anyone but the Aldmeri Dominion wins...
Spoiler
The war has been staged by the Thalmor. Without the Dhovakiin's influence, it would be a stalemate that drags on for years. The capture of Ulfric Stormcloak was a Once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and Alduin blew it for the Empire.

Also, any time any force starts to get the upper hand, the Thalmor interfere and revert it to stalemate. They weren't at the execution to oversee Ulfric's execution. they were there to stop it.

The thalmor are tough, but have you seen those warriors from Hammerfell? They've got curved swords. Curved! Swords!

The Thalmor benifit from a war that drags on, that is what they would like.

Ultimatly I think the Empire was in the dominant position. They had Ulfric on the chopping block once, unless the Dragonborn sides with the Stormcloaks it would only be a matter of time till he was there again (or unless the Thalmor was able to interfere).

Your comparing 10 stormcloaks armed to teeth with greatswords versus 10 imperials with wussy longswords and no shields?

He didn't say what would happen if the dragonborn didn't exist he said what would happen if the dragonborn took the neutral stance during the civil war. You can still do the main quest without doing the civil war questline.

Agree. If only the Empire didn't wimp out too early and become badasses like the Redguards of Hammerfell, they could have routed the Thalmor long ago. But now, the Thalmor have the Empire at their throat.

Well if the Empire is heavily influenced (if loosely based) on the Roman Empire, Id say the game takes place near the collapse of the western Empire, the sack of Rome, and the beginning of the "dark ages".

Thats when the Legions started losing control of the provinces and getting their asses kicked by people like the "Nords".

I have the feeling that without some "divine intervention" their days are numbered.

Happens to the best of us.

Lets face it though if your dragon born is a nord, he's not gonna let the people he knows/ loves etc go to the dogs, he's gonna give the enemy some balls to the wall hell and he's got the big ones to go with his bark.
