Who would survive longest in the Lone Wanderer's shoes?

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 6:54 pm

I was hurting for ideas for a new DiD playthrough when, suddenly, I had a brilliant idea. What about a playthrough using the stats of another character from the series? (now I know that idea isn't original or brilliant, but it gets better, don't worry) Then I couldn't decide which character's stats to use. I thought of all the toughest, most survivable characters from the series - Tycho, Joshua Graham, Frank Horrigan, et cetera - when I thought, why not try all of them? (well, not Horrigan cause his primary stats are all 10)

So that's where this challenge comes in. I provided a list below of some candidates for characters from the series and their main statistics. Anyone who wants to take on this challenge should pick one character from the list that they want to role-play and post that you want to take that character in this thread. First post, first serve. If someone takes Joshua Graham before you do, too bad. Pick someone else. The purpose of this is to see how well certain characters would fare if they found themselves in the Lone Wanderer's shoes (exiled from Vault 101 and searching for their father). So basically, you take a certain character's stats and build a character from them, then you play the game and make decisions in a way that you think that character would make them. Then we see who lasts the longest before they die.

http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1354988-who-would-survive-longest-in-the-couriers-shoes-2/

The Rules:
  • This is Dead is Dead, so when you die, post it here and abandon that character.
  • Everyone must play the game on Hard difficulty.
  • Try, to the best of your abilities, to make decisions like the character you are playing as would make. If you are playing as Caesar you probably shouldn't wear Power Armor and wield a Gatling Laser.
  • The main challenge in this is that you don't get to pick your own custom stats, you have to work with the stats and character you pick here and figure out how to make it work for as long as possible without dying. So do that. If you have Joshua Graham and his tag skills are Barter, Guns, and Repair; don't tag them at the beginning and then put all your skill points into energy weapons and sneak after that, stick with the character's strengths.
  • If you have any suggestions for other characters that you want me to add to the list, let me know, and if I can find their stats I'll add them. But you can only have one character at a time, so choose wisely.
  • This is first come, first serve. If someone picks a certain character before you do, you will have to pick a different character. Each character can only have one person playing as them, so if I pick Tycho then no one else can pick Tycho.
  • Not every character has the same amount of stats given, for example, one character's Crit. Chance may be given while another's is not - the more stats given means the less stats you get to control/customize, and thus the more challenging that build will be.
  • Some characters will have more SPECIAL points than are available at the beginning of the game, if that is the case then figure out how to make it work with bobble heads later. If that still doesn't work than make it as close as possible to that character's actual SPECIAL.
Awards:

If you complete the game's main quest your play-through will be considered "completed" and a trophy will be placed next to your character's name. Inside the spoiler tag, I will put whatever level your character was at when he/she completed the main quest. I will also write any DLCs that you complete next to your character's name in fancy gold letters, so post whenever you complete any DLCs. Other than emoticon trophies and gold letters, you also receive bragging rights and the envy of all the envious people who might be participating in the challenge.

The Characters:

Ill take 3 dog since I allready made him. It was very tedious dialing in his facial. And in the end I had to just sorta guess some stuff from what the GECK tells you.
I have an end of the Vault save point to start him over from there seeing how I made him 3 dogs evil twin.

The Geck shows these are his starting skills , with Lockpick being a tag instead of repair. And can I adjust his specials from his base with my own choices to equal 40?

This sounds interesting, but FONV would never run on my 360, well, it would run for five minutes before crashing, so technically..... So I wouldn't know how someone acted.

I thought this was his Idea extended from the FONV thread to include it on FO3 , hence he posted it here.

Was I wrong? cuz I dont have FONV

Yep, there was a poll on the New Vegas thread to see if he should make a version for the other games.

You don't need New Vegas for this challenge, I just posted the link to the New Vegas thread as a means of advertising, but I didn't really consider that it is kind of misleading. Sorry 'bout that. But if you don't know what a character from New Vegas, say Joshua Graham, would do because you haven't seen him before, then you can just pick a character that you're familiar with, like Desmond or Mr. Crowley. Also, if you have a suggestion for a character that I can add to the list that you want to RP then let me know. Even if their stats aren't available, we can come up with stats that make sense for that character and make it work.

Yeah, I posted this topic here because 10+ people in the New Vegas thread said they would do a Fallout 3 version of the challenge, so no you don't need New Vegas to do this challenge, again, it was more or less advertising when I posted the link to the New Vegas thread at the top. I'm going to move it now so that the thread is less misleading.

The SPECIAL stats are all good, and yes, it's always fine if you need to add a few things to get the stats up to 40, in fact I did that for several of the characters listed in the OP already. And thanks for letting me know about Lockpick being a tag skill, I don't have Fallout 3 for PC so I just made up tag skills that I thought were likely, but I'm glad I know the real ones now. Good Luck!

There are characters from Fallout 3 and the originals in the New Vegas thread. You choose any character you want.

Well considering the OP's stat post , then I guess there is no reason some one couldnt make a char from NV ... except making them look correct. And they never met them if they dont have NV.

Albiet a slight problem if enough people that have NV play and choose chars from NV

Also the fact, all former New Vegas chars, would have to be 19...... FOREVER!!!
But hmpf, I can understand certain FO3 chars in NV, such as Desmond, Jezza (jericho) Gob, Charon, maybe someone from the BOS or Outcast y'know, but NV chars, going East coast, WHY? what would make them go there?

Well...none of the back stories really make any sense. I mean why would Lucius have taken a job as a Courier? Or why would Caesar? How would Tycho have been in the Courier's shoes? He would be dead by the time of New Vegas. So my point is that back stories don't really matter in this challenge, it's more about seeing how a certain character's stats and decisions would play out when put in the Lone Wanderer's situation.

I'm just about ready to throwdown and pick a character. Couple of questions:

I've been playing FO3 for a while. I know that with the right perk picks, I can be indestructible by about level 12. Am I making this character be uber?
Normally I play with http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1176044-fallout-3-hardcoe/ in place. These rules make for the ultimate play, as far as I'm concerned, never OP... forever scrounging and scrimping. What are the rules regarding perk picks and point distribution?

Ok, I'm going to take a break on my Desmond run in the Fallout: NV thread. (If that's alright, and I'm gonna update on the thread later whats been going on.) And I would like to play Owyn Lyons but I'm not to sure if he has tag skills or not, so I'm thinking for his tag skills to focus on would be Energy Weapons, Small Guns (Since he used to be a paladin but is obviously too old for heavy weapons), and I'm debating for the last one for either Science or Repair.

Double Spoiler alert: Everybody dies because because if you kill Flak, then Shrapnel will take to the wastes armed with a fatman, eventually crossing paths with you and killing one of the approximately 400 random enemies in your vicinity with it, thus killing you as well.

That's what makes Fallout 3 Dead is Dead challenging (and somewhat frustrating): it's unpredictability. Everything else is relatively easy, especially with stims instantly restoring health.

I would say Energy Weapons, Small Guns, and Science for his Tag Skills. If someone who has the PC version would confirm it that would be good though. I'll add him to the OP.

I'll give it a go as Sarah Lyons.

Can someone verify the stats on the wiki for me, I want to make sure that I have the right SPECIAL.

Her stats are as follows:

Sarah Lyons
Spoiler

SPECIAL: 5 ST, 7 PE, 6 EN, 4 CH, 3 IN, 6 AG, 4 LK
Tag Skills: Big Guns, Energy Weapons, Small Guns

I'm taking Vulpes this time!
- Though now I'm at a cross roads...Ignore my recent char and start again or wait out Vulpes' run....

I'll start Vulpes

Sounds good, I'll mark you down for Vulpes.

Well, the idea for perks and point distribution is to stick to the character's strengths and Tag Skills, but your rules look fine (and extremely challenging). Just add Dead is Dead to that list and you're good. So no, uber character isn't necessarily the goal, unless the character you pick happens to lead you to the uber powerful perks, which is unlikely in most cases.

Ok, sounds good, I actually DO play DiD with those rules, my current character at level 29 is the farthest I've ever gotten with the aforementioned rules that I use.
I've been ripping up the wasteland with my ^^ slaver queen, so how bout I turn it 'round and choose Lucas Simms?

Can ya put me down for Lucas?

Yee-essss

Dear lord Melee/Unarmed weapons in this are terrible, I was a swings length away from a raider and it just wouldn't hit and then the power attacks would miss because the enemy would step back during the swing :brokencomputer:
- I'm sticking with Sm.Guns until I find something worth using in CQC, hopefully the lead Pipe is good in this one as it is in NV

Eh, thanks for reminding me that Melee in Fallout 3 kind of svcked. When I pick a character I think I'm going to choose a stealth based small guns user, but I haven't decided yet.
