So who're you gonna make?

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 1:17 am

When playing a Bethesda game I always create my first 2 characters using a "Villian-and-Me" setup. The first character is always evil or extremely self-centered, harsh, much like the Fallout world (usually moreso) and the antagonist of my personal fan fic stories. They are also the leaders of any morally devoid factions, Kingpin of all wasteland vice, and the Biggest Bad to my self-insert character.

As previously mentioned my 2nd character is ME inside the game, and Im a good guy IRL (in real life)... im quiet most times but Ive been told Im charismatic among other positive things from a lot of people. I wouldnt say im a Hero and certainly couldnt be in a world like Fallout; but i draw some of my happiness from seeing others happy and helping to make them that way. So im an Anti-Hero, and like my favorite Marvel characters Spiderman/Deadpool, i like to make jokes of all lifes happenings as part of a Grand Destiny.

To answer:

My first character will be Hunter Holmes Hazard, an ex-US Army Colonel from a family of Veterans that have been involved in every war the US has been in since the Civil War. Hunter was noted for his strong Anti-Communist rhetoric before the War, and holds a searing hatred for anyone who expresses even a vaguely similar ideology. He has seen combat in numerous hotspots around the globe, and acquired PTSD as well as schizophrenia from harrowing war experiences. He sees these as weaknesses and actively attempts to hide them; though this results in horric outbursts that few live to tell about.

He is not in touch with reality, so his Perception is 1.
He is horribly unfortunate, with a Luck of 1.
He is also not very charismatic, and his Charisma is 1.

Despite these drawbacks Hunter will succeed in his new mission:

...whatever it is he decides that is..

Very useful links! Thank you! I never considered using MBTI for character creation (used it before for a few things), but I can see how it could really help someone nail things down when struggling with a character or even coming up with new ideas.

My first character will probably be something along the lines of:

Name: Not chosen yet

Gender: Male

Body Type: Depends on what the options look like. Probably some toned muscles but a bit on the thin side rather than larger and more muscular.

Personality: INFP but borderline INTP as well.

Background: Still developing (a bit hard to do with so many questions still left unanswered, but I’ll probably come up with a few and hope that at least one fits in well with how the game starts)

Strengths:
- He understands and empathizes with others quickly and easily allowing him greater skills at building relationships or manipulation, whichever he chooses.
- Simultaneously he is highly logical, allowing him to quickly anolyze complex systems / problems, come up with a variety of possible solutions with varying probable results, and choose the best one to achieve the most desired result.
- He’s also considerably physically self-aware, allowing greater than average fluidity of motion and interaction with the environment.

Weaknesses:
- Physically he’s fairly weak. In a brawl, he’d have a hell of a tough time knocking someone out while he’d go down after taking only a couple of soft punches.
- Not the best card player in town.

Playstyle:

He likes to explore, craft new things, meet new people, make new relationships while strengthening old ones, discover new stories, and make the world a better place when he can.

When it comes to conflict, he’d prefer to try diplomacy first but if that’s not possible… he’d prefer to stay out of sight and kill from a distance while strategically using the environment to his advantage.

Starting Special:
S 2

P 4

E 2

C 6

I 6

A 6

L 2

I plan to increase charisma fairly early, intelligence after that, and eventually agility as well. I may also increase strength to 4 for crafting and there's a slight chance of increasing perception for greater non-stealth combat effectiveness.

My perk choices will focus on dialogue, accessing locations/containers/computers, sneaking, crafting, pistols/rifles, and misc. agility perks in roughly that order depending on how things are going. In the event that underwater exploration is at least a decent part of the game (optional or not), I may change things around to raise my endurance up to 5.

I have yet to work out the staring SPECIAL, but my character is going to be a struggling entrepreneur. Manufacturing and attempting to sell his weapons under the moniker of Crown Industries. Extremely talented but not necessarily the best at selling, he's a lovable enough chap trying to make a living in the wasteland. Unfortunately, struggling to sell his weapons has given him some vices. Alcoholism, and a tendency to do less than morally good things to push his product. Essentially a mixture of Samuel Colt and Fargo's Lester Nygaard

As with all games where you create a character I will be creating my boy scout (very good, always helps people) super tank (max strength and endurance bruiser that likes to throw himself between people and danger) self insert. I hope to make him look similar to my Saints Row 4 character, as seen in my profile picture, which is also just a super buff version of myself.

I'm going to find a lonely corner of the wasteland and hone my loner/survivalist persona. He's going to be a gaunt cheeked, sunken eyed, bearded fellow who knows all the finest ways to prepare gecko steak. He'll be a sharpshooter with homeade rifles of the traditional lead throwing variety, eschewing high-tech weaponry--technology, which right or wrong, he views as responsible for all the wrong of the world. After a while, much to his surprise, he'll end up founding a small settlement that will break his propensity for isolationism and he'll set out into the wider world looking to perhaps pick up where his old life left off.

A male character (because there's romance this time), build in a way to min/max it's roleplay possibilities until the level locked perk system force me to devellop my combat abilities.

Here's mine, putting it in spoiler tags since it's loooong. Undergoing construction still.

Spoiler
Dunno about the name yet. Naming things svck. I like names like Misha and Jonah and Siobhan but I'm pretty sure at least like two of those are male names and I don't know how popular they are either. She'd be tall for a woman at 1.77cm, lean and wiry cuz she's active (obviously) and forgets to eat. Short blonde hair bleached almost white by the sun [I'm only going with blonde if we can change the eyebrow color independently cuz I seriously can't stand super blonde eyebrows] with green/hazel eyes. Sharp, angular features. Attractive in like a pointy way if that makes sense. Her shoulders would be peeling and covered in freckles since she usually wears a tank top [she hordes sunscreen tho. Or makes her own. What's the expiration date on sunscreen? People would probably have used it all anyway], she's got quite a few scars but none of them appear serious enough to have been life threatening. She moves with a kind of calculated efficiency, like she knows exactly how much energy needs to be expended to get where she's going.

SPECIAL: 1117963, the high charisma is primarily due to 1) an impressive personal 'presence' 2) arresting looks 3) the knowledge of which inputs generally give the desired outputs.

BACKGROUND: Father was a mechanic and mother was a grade school teacher. She had an older brother by about 4 years. When she was 12 she and her mother were in car accident, she came out relatively unscathed but watched her mother die. It was one of those defining moments in a person's life. Her mother bled out and she couldn't do anything, she couldn't do anything because she lacked the knowledge to know that she could do something. Up until that point she'd wanted to become a gymnast, it now switched over to a nebulous desire to ~know~ things. Specifically thing that could help people, but the emphasis was on knowledge. The fear of helplessness and, specifically, helplessness because of not knowing enough remains a core feature for her. Her father was a kind and well meaning man but he really had no idea what to do with a girl who was just about to hit puberty.

Cuz of her scintillating intellect she graduated early at 16 and got a full scholarship to UMB and I actually googled that [censored] and I thought a doctorates in Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology sounded suitably impressive. Something vaguely to do with medicine before that. Though maybe more theory than practice. Anywhoo she met her husband-to-be at uni for the first time, he was loud, irreverent, large, charismatic in the traditional sense and she didn't pay him much thought at the time. After she scooped up her doctorates she skedaddled off to join the war effort (I have NO idea whether any of this coincides with the timeline) both because she liked the idea of saving lives but also because with the threat of nuclear war looming she figured it was the best place to get some of that knowledge/insight/understanding she craved. The government/military had taken an interest in her published works and aptitude scores and wanted to recruit her into the science division but because of a convenient (for me) clerical error they just missed her and she spent some time in the field. She'd meet her husband-to-be here again and they'd keep in contact this time. Eventually the military found her and she's shuffled off to the science division.

Kinda hazy how it goes from there. I mean she has to unjoin military at some point I assume. Though maybe not. Why do I think that? Anyway assuming she does it'll either have to be because she got pregnant with Shaun or she discovered something she didn't particularly like. Though neither of those really sound completely like her... maybe both, at the same time? Maybe something else? Hmmm.

She doesn't like her family in law very much, she got used to her husband's larger than life nature over time and even grew to love it, not so much his entire extended family. She grew apart from her father during her teenage years because teenagers but they've grown closer over the years. He's somewhat lonely since he's never remarried and he feels awkward around his son whose gay, he tries to supportive but he's generally discomfited with the idea. He's delighted when Shaun is born and wants to be more of an active presence in his life.

MORALITY/MINDSET: Quiet. Deeply curious. Single-minded verging on obsessive on whatever she interested in atm. Cautious EXCEPT if her curiosity is aroused, for instance if she has reason to believe there is something interesting at the bottom of a cave she'd go in without much forethought but if she got wind of someone wanting to kill her she'd circle around them before going in for the kill. If that makes sense. She'd want to know about them, who they are, what they're capable of, why they want to kill her and have an exit strategy planned beforehand.

She was never a super nice person but in the pre-war world her desire to know (to avoid helplessness) was extended to those closest to her. If she knew things she could protect them better too. The death of all of that has atrophied that 'closest to' element, she know desires to know primarily to protect herself. Always somewhat aloof she know has thick emotional walls between her and everyone else, she might laugh with you and play Caravan with you and drink with you and probably even screw you but if you die tomorrow she'll bury you and move on.

Desire to know has also been supplemented by the discovery that she simply enjoys exploration, finding things, adventure. Freedom. Danger too but not just for the adrenaline rush, primarily it's the sense of control, competence and dominance she gets from surviving. To a degree this is true of violence and killing too but she isn't really willing to admit that.

She helps people if it doesn't cost her too much ('too much' varies though) or she's properly compensated ('properly' varies too). She has lots of casual six cuz that's the only time her brain shuts up completely. She avoids thinking about the concept of family if she can, if she can't and she's reminded of her family specifically... have you ever seen someone's neck tense up so bad their head shakes? It's like that. With her, cuz she's thin, you can actually see the neck muscles tense up. I also like to imagine the thought comes with like a brief burst of static or white noise or something. Like yah know when you hear something awful or shocking and your brain just kinda derps out for a second? Like that.

Ruthless when necessary. Necessary tends to be if you tried to kill her, might pose a threat in future or your continued well-being is detrimental to her. She only takes charge/responsibility of others if she considers everyone else up for the position to be incompetent. She prefers going around obstacles if she can't she dismantles them bit by bit before coming in like a wrecking ball. She is dismissive of old world nostalgia at best and derisive of it at worst, she would not support something like the NCR for instance.

ASSORTED PECCADILLOES: She chews her nails, sometimes to the quick. She avoids her ring finger but she isn't consciously aware of the fact so it's noticeably longer than the other nails. She doesn't have her wedding ring anymore though. Dunno if I'm going to have drop it or sell it. Assuming you can ofc. She sometimes counts the letters in a sentence, if they add up to an equal number they're good if they add up to an unequal number they're bad. She generally only sleeps about 3 hours at a time. She talks to herself when she's lost in thought. She completely ignores children, as in she doesn't even acknowledge their existence unless they speak to her directly/she really needs to for whatever reason. She enjoys swimming and gardening, 'specially planting things that don't generally inhabit the same place in the wild. She also hordes books. And her favorite colour is yellow.

I've got two characters in mind, but I currently have no idea about their SPECIAL or perks, since we don't really know anything about that yet.

Either I'll be an older, balding or graying, Bruce Willis type charmer/ass-whooper (or Ron Pearlman maybe), who will charm his way through the wasteland unless some serious ass-whooping is required. I'll be taking advantage of every snappy comeback offered in the dialogue options and sleeping with every chick I can. He won't be a settler, but definitely more of a lone wanderer when doing business, and then blowing it all on booze when he finds a settlement to relax at. He'll be a tinkerer too, for survival and in order to make money to cover his alcohol budget.

My other character is a Michael Wincott - Alien Resurrection, kinda [censored] who shoots first and asks questions later. Preferably backstabbing style. He will probably look into the whole settlement thing if there are quick caps to be made. Otherwise he'll sell his aging mother for a pack of cigarettes, cause he smokes like 3 packs a day, or just steal whatever he needs. He will be entirely unfriendly and making every decision based on the best outcome for himself and ho won't think twice about capping some unsuspecting svcker for a nice new jacket.

Finally I may try a female character who will be a sniper/stealth/brain type relying on a strong sidekick to avoid getting her ass kicked. Haven't really though much about this one yet, though.

Physically, an amalgam of myself and other bros in my fam. Character-wise I'll be going for a Charismatic Engineer/Tech Savvy Diplomat. Not so much into the energy weapons and really "egghead-y" type of science, but more of a MacGyver/Tony Stark In A Cave type.

I never plan my first character, I always just go with the flow. Once I've seen the kinds of things the game allows, then I come up with a well defined character for my second playthrough.

I usually play as the good natured scoundrel, the Han Solo type.

For example when first playing Fallout 3, I stumbled across an interesting looking town. Said hello to the guard out front but he had an attitude. One thing led to another and let's just the conversation got old really fast and the shooting started. Next thing I know I'm shooting it out with his buddies. I push into the town looking for cover and the gun battle gets bigger and bigger. I start to think maybe I screwed up and am going to go down as a wastland mass murderer. The smoke clears and I had killed everyone. I look over and notice the cages with people in them. I had just shot up Paradise Falls and freed all the slaves, becoming a hero....

But only because I got into an argument with the guy out front. That's my character.

Ooh, I'll try that!

1. What is your full name?
Carl Archmark Sparkstart Tarharp Barscar Starkcard Smarmcharmbard Sharpbarnshark Darkartparkmarch Darnhardarmgard
2. Where and when were you born?
Ar... arch... The Arch?
3. Who are/were your parents?
Father: Clark Archmark Sparkstart Tarharp Barscar Smarmcharmbard Sharpbarnshark Darkartparkmarch Darnhardarmgard
Mother: Mary Archmark Sparkstart Tarharp Barscar Smarmcharmbard Sharpbarnshark Darkartparkmarch Darnhardarmgard (maiden name Sue)
4. Do you have any siblings? What are/were they like?
Older brother: Arn Archmark Sparkstart Tarharp Barscar Smarmcharmbard Sharpbarnshark Darkartparkmarch Darnhardarmgard Ardharm
Younger brother: Marv Archmark Sparkstart Tarharp Barscar Smarmcharmbard Sharpbarnshark Darkartparkmarch Darnhardarmgard Hartfart*
Sister (family's black sheep): Sard Archmark Sparkstart Tarharp Barscar Starkcard Smarmcharmbard Sharpbarnshark Darkartparkmarch Darnhardarmgard Smarttart
*Pretty much comic relief sidekick.
5. Where do you live now, and with whom? Describe the place and the person/people.
Ar... ar... Ark?
6. What is your occupation?
Ar... arch... architect?
12. What words and/or phrases do you use very frequently?
...ar.
14. Do you have any quirks, strange mannerisms, annoying habits, or other defining characteristics?
...ar.
And there's probably a good point to stop.
My SPECIAL: I noticed 28 is 1+2+3+4+5+6+7, so I decided to apply them like that.
S: 2 (Previously, Strength has always been my number one attribute, so this is a big change)
P: 6 (Mainly for extra dialogue options and Sniper-perk)
E: 3 (Life Giver would be nice for survivability)
C: 7 (Architect. Settlements. Yeah.)
I: 5 (This was originally one of my dump stats, but I guess an architect should have points in Intelligence. "Carl, you fool! That's the load-bearing wall, you can't remove that!")
A: 4 (Top attribute to be increased later. I like VATS.)
L: 1 (My character is an architect in a post-apocalyptic society. That's not very lucky. *Imagine a Wastelander holding a sign saying "Will design your shack for food."*)
So yeah, my character's going to be a Pre-War architect who'll have to train up his combat skills attributes to survive in the new world.

A true natured good person, high on intelligence and an arms expert, wants to save the world and in the end becomes a Messiah of the entire land ......hmmm, I might have to use some cheats and glitches to get there.....
I love the satisfaction of playing the nice guy on the first run .. Although it was hard to do in FNV , but I walked as the Savior of the land in FO3 and enjoyed every moment of it :-)

I'll probably default to my standard playstyle in Bethesda Games. Not to gimmicky, but focus on Sneaking, getting those tasty sneak crits. Looking to get my hands on a decent rifle early.

Inteligence to get crafting options and stronger medical skills, and some Agility.
