Whom Gods Annoy

I’ve received the Daedric Staff from Rosentia to take to the Darkfathom Cave where the staff originally came from. I’m at the alter but I do not get any dialog that will allow me to drop the staff on the alter. How do I get the required dialog? Could this be because I had visited the cave earlier out of order? And now I can’t get rid of the staff? Thanks for your help.

Not sure I can help, but let me give it a shot and ask that you bear with me. There is no known bug associated with that portion of the quest. That suggests one of two possibilities.

1. You have overlooked something. Based on your post, it sounds like you have everything covered, but bear with me for a review. You are stuck with the staff. You are at the altar at the bottom of Darkfathom Cave. When you approached the altar you did not get a message like you are supposed to, saying you can drop the staff. When you try to drop the staff, you cannot. Again, based on your post, it sounds like all this is the case.

2. You are on PC and running mods that somehow conflict. Usually this is the problem with an unknown/undiscovered bug.

If that info is of no help, then let us know what your last quest log entry says and let us know if you are playing on PC or not. Good luck. :)

Going to the cave before the quest is no problem. I really don′t see why you′re not able to drop the staff if it′s not a mod conflict as Acadian suggested. Have you tried to walk around the altar a bit? Sometimes if you stand in the wrong place you don′t get the message. I helped someone else with another quest a while back, he said he couldn′t progress but it was only because he wasn′t where he was supposed to be :)

Acadian, you have summarized the problem correctly. I have been all around and on top of the alter and no dialog for dropping the staff.

Mirocu, My last entry is: "I've arrived at the Shrine to Sheogorath. I should find the alter and place the staff neat it."

To the best of my knowledge I don't have any mods installed. But then again, the older I get, the better my forgetter gets. Maybe I should download a mod? If so which one(s) and where are they?

It's beginning to look like I might have to replay this quest.

I do appreciate the help and consideration from you both. Thank you.

No need for that. Are you on PC? If so it′s possible to enter a code via the console to make the stuff so it′s not a quest item thus dropable. You can also force the quest update via console which you enable by pressing the key just below Esc. Usually anyway.

*To unquest the staff, enter 'setquestobject 0004F790 0'. That should enable you to drop the staff at the altar.

*To force quest update, enter 'setstage MS43 70'. That should give you the appropriate update. There is a command to finish the quest altogether right away, but I don′t wanna spoil too much fun :)

Hope this works. Otherwise I′m stumped :sadvaultboy:

Did you drop the staff near the shrine?

Open the inventory and drop. On the PC it's a shift click in the inventory.

BTW, it just so happens I'm planning on doing this quest in a few hours anyway. If I see any other details I could post.

But not I recommend just going to where the shrine is and drop the staff.

EDIT:

I just did that quest now. After you get the quest update you say you have:

All you need to do is drop the staff. There is no further update until you drop the staff. Also you don't activate anything, you just need to drop it out of inventory. Like I say for the PC that is shift-left click on the inventory item.

I'm guessing that your looking for something to activate or some other quest update to drop, but there isn't any - you just drop the staff. There is a non-quest pop up that say you no longer feel compelled to keep the staff, but that is not a journal update.

Well, not at all what I expected. I think this is a first for me with this game. I was expecting some kind of dialog to take place before I dropped the staff. And you were right, all I had to do was drop the staff. All's well that ends well. Next time I'll try to follow the updates more closely and pay better attention to what is being said. I feel like a real goof! But not to goofy to let you know I really appreciate your help. Thank you.

In order to be able to drop the staff, you'll have to get the log for Quest Stage #60.

(#60)
"I've arrived at the shrine to Sheogorath. I should find the altar and place the staff near it."

In order to get the log, try running this console command:

setstage MS43 60

If it doesn't help I'll try to look deeper into it.

-SniperShooter

(And by the way, I didn't look at the posts above. Sorry. Nice to hear that you found out.)

There is actually. As you get close to the altar, the game is supposed to tell you that you no longer feel compelled to hang on to the staff. For some reason that didn't trigger for you, unless you missed it somehow.
