So whos getting the Guide?

Post » Sat Sep 11, 2010 11:23 pm

I personally think that with a game this size, a guide is essential. There is just far too much to exlore, collect and kill that I won't be satisfied until I have done it all.
What are your reasons for getting the guide or not?

No, best I prefer to find things myself, not be told where they are. Even if I didn't, I'd use the wiki anyway - it's free, it's more in-depth, and it's more likely to actually be accurate.

Just to have it around in case I get stuck somewhere or would like to get a little more supplemental information about wherever or whatever I am doing as I play the game. Mostly just have it around collect dust lol

No. Great idea, but I want everything to be a surprise. I want to fire up NV in six months time and there still be things I haven't seen or places I haven't explored. That's the whole point of adventure games for me. If I get stuck... then I just work at it for weeks until I get unstuck.

Ehhhhhh. I'm debating. I may just use The Vault. But with crafting, cooking and the like in this game, those charts it may supply could prove invaluable.

Yes, and I won't open it up for as long as possible........2nd or 3rd play through. BUT I hope it has a good index so I can get to the exact info I need so I don't stumble onto something I don't wanna see yet (oblivion guide wasn't good with that though).....and I want the CE guide for NV.

I'm getting the guide for collectable purposes only. I'm buying both the hard cover and the soft cover.

No, I like to figure things out myself. Reading up on everything is good way to spoil the game for me personally. It's also much easier to go into the "optimize character" mode when you know everything beforehand, and I prefer on just creating a character and finding my way through the gameworld.

If there's something that I absolutely need to check up on, I'll just the Vault.

I typically don't buy guides I don't find them essential to the game and I like surprises.

I agree about finding things for myself. I normally playthrough, then go back over with the guide for the things that I have missed.
I think it depends on what console people play on. With FO3 I got it on console first and had the guide to hand then played it again on PC with mods etc and then used the wiki.

In my experience, especially wiht FO3, I've found that when I play a few months later I still discover something new, even when using the guide. Working at it for weeks is great, and at least the guide will be there when you really need it.

Ehhhhhh. I'm debating. I may just use The Vault. But with crafting, cooking and the like in this game, those charts it may supply could prove invaluable.

Couldnt agree more. With skills to learn Im going to want to make the best of my resources, making sure i can create the most powerful weapons etc.

No i dont think the book is worth its money.

Really? I seriously doubt you will be able to get the full experience out of the game without a guide. There is just too much to do.

I thought the index was pretty good in the FO3 guide. The Collectors Edition Guide looks awesome. Although I don't exactly know what extras are included in it lol. I hope its background information and things like concept drawings etc, as is normally the case with collectors editions.

Why get the guide when there is the wiki.

Because its more reliable, ready to hand and easier to use.

Heh what are you talking about? Everything is on the internet. And you know whats great about that? That it is updated every single minute. Not like a book, which does contain a lot of mistakes and does NOT cover everything there is to do and see.
Also, using search is so much faster than using a table of contents in a book. Just saying.

Conclusion: why pay for something that is worse?

When the wiki is corrected any time an error is found, and everything relevant is linked, the first and last certainly aren't true. "Game Guides" tend to contain a fair few errors.

I voted no cause I bought once one for Oblivion and hardly used it.
Not worth the money for me personally in that case.

For me, a guide would ruin this game. I like finding (almost) everything out on my own. Sometimes I will use the Fallout Wiki.

Fair point. But ill still get the guide, which in the past has shown me everything that I wanted to do and see. I don't really recall that many errors. Sure there were a few, but none that seriously impacted the game. Im sure I mentioned earlier as well, it depends on your setup. For me I would have to walk across the room to my computer, then back again to my 360, trying to remember the information if its not something simple like a town name for example. Having the guide to hand is far more easier in my opinion.

The guide is good for a quick reference about the game.
The wiki is about the more in depth anolysis of the Fallout Universe.

Both are a godsend, I give them that.

So I'll keep using them both, starting my second playtrough.

The first I just always want to screw about.

This poll has been done quite a number of times before.. As for my answer its no because they are an outdated source of information and are simply put out to milk a little extra money. There is always going to be somewhere on the internet which is a better source. For Fallout its the http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_Wiki
