Why do all the cities have a gold color to it?

Post » Sat Mar 12, 2011 7:58 pm

I noticed a few days ago that Frostcrag Spire looked http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w139/tatts4life_photos/Oblivion%20Glitches/ScreenShot133.jpg when leaving the IC Market District. Well today when I walked out of Frostcrag Spire I noticed that Bruma had a http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w139/tatts4life_photos/Oblivion%20Glitches/ScreenShot132.jpg to it. Then when the IC is in part of the screen it too has that http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w139/tatts4life_photos/Oblivion%20Glitches/ScreenShot138.jpg to it. And http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w139/tatts4life_photos/Oblivion%20Glitches/ScreenShot136.jpg looks gold too.

Now I didn't have any kind of problem like this before. The problem started after I used TES4LODgen to fix a problem with the white gold tower not showing up in the Talos Plaza District.

Can anybody help me out and give my an idea of how to fix this?

That's a fairly common problem with VWD objects. It happens because the meshes aren't optimized as well as they should be, and the problem becomes worse as you add more VWD objects to the game. That's what happened when you used TES4LODGen, you created VWD objects that didn't exist before and now it's having an impact on the game engine because of the crappy meshes. One thing you can do is download Arthmoor's RAEVWD mod and use his meshes. He's cleaned everything up, including the default meshes, so there won't be as many problems with them. You don't need to install his whole mod if you don't want to, you can just use his versions of the default meshes.

Kind of drastic IMO though. Aren't you cutting out alot of visual effects by doing that, like some shadows and specular lighting?

This is only on LOD though. The fixes don't touch anything else. I don't see shadows on LOD, just odd lighting. I'm using RAEVWD already and still have this problem, although not as dramatic as illustrated in the link.

While that fix may work, it's a bit harsh, and frankly a bit rash and unnecessary. As was already suggested, the core meshes from RAEVWD will solve that problem. There may be other mods with VWD meshes that aren't compliant, but as awareness of the REAL cause of the problem spreads, folks are updating their mods to correct it. It looks like the Frostcrag Reborn folks haven't got the memo yet :)

All it takes is one bad mesh to spoil the whole scene.

Hmmm. I'm not running Frostcrag Reborn... Alright I'll take a closer look and see specifically which meshes are having the problem. I thought everything was supplied by RAEVWD, but I do have a number of quest mods, so one of them may have put some new meshes in there...

One of the primary suspects is the Aqueduct from Let the People Drink. Qazzaq will be updating that at some point after running PyFFI to correct the _far.nifs. The usual cause of the yellow VWD issue are leftover specular data branches in the mesh.

If all of your files from mods are stored loose, you can make PyFFI do all the work for you with this batch file:
c:\python26\python.exe c:\python26\scripts\niftoaster.py --jobs=4 --noninteractive --only=_far modify_makefarnif --exclude=NiSourceTexture C:\Oblivion\Fars > C:\Oblivion\Fars\log_far.txt

Adjust the paths to fit where your stuff is stored of course, and make sure the jobs=4 setting matches how many cores your CPU has, or you'll cripple the system while it runs.

I don't know WTF is going on. The INI tweak worked for a little bit but now Bruma is turning yellow again. If I want to take as little hit as possible to my system what files should I use with RAEVWD?

99.99% certain your issue isn't coming from anything provided by RAEVWD. You really should be looking into other sources of the yellow VWD. That batch file I posted up there will root out and correct ANY bad ones so long as you've got them stored loose.

To answer the question though, minimum impact from RAEVWD is to install only the Core package. All other stuff is additions which will reduce performance to some degree, ranging from slight (the Ayleid ruins) to very noticeable (architecture).

I think you read my post wrong. I haven't started using RAEVWD yet. I tried the INI tweak somebody suggested and things worked fine for a few days. But today I logged in and things went back to being yellow. So now I'm gonna go and use your mod.

And thanks for the answer. I'm not too worried about seeing everything on a clear day just the cities and them not being yellow. Also I don't know how to use PyFFI. I've never used it before.

OH one more question. I'm using Frostcrag reborn and also have the Snowdale UL with the patch. and that is showing yellow too. How do I go about fixing that?

You'd have to use that PyFFI script on the files from Frostcrag Reborn. They're probably dirty nifs. Without even looking, I'd lay bets that they have specular data attached to them, which is usually what causes yellowing.

Thanks. I'll go read the PyFFI thread to learn how to use that.

Just wanted to chime in here a sec...

You seem to have an older version of the UL Snowdale patch. I've (semi) recently updated it to include a better LOD Land quad, so you might want to consider picking it up. :)

Are you saying that if I only use the meshes from that mod it want cause the performance hit it would if used the whole mod? I have an old system capable of running at medium settings, and I also get this issue but they show up black for me.

Should be the same result. The RAEVWD Core meshes are just cleaned up optimized versions of the vanilla _far.nifs.
