Why do all the other playstyles trash talk the mage style?

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 11:56 pm

I can't figure this out. I understand that Magic took an arrow to the knee (for comedies sake) this game around, but why the hate? Why do I see people thrashing other players styles and what they do in their own game? Back to the matter at hand, I've specifically noticed that players who follow the warrior playstyle (I won't use the word class or build because some people go freaking nuts saying how Skyrim did away with those words ...) very blatantly oppose anything else, especially magic use. They're always like "Har har my sword can do like 200 damage with smithing and enchanting and is epicly awesome" or "Mages svck as soon as they run out of mana, so don't play them." What the hell is up with this? Why are people trying to make this into a competiton? Its a SINGLE PLAYER game for god sakes ... anyway my rant is over. Anyone agree/disagree with my ideas or have others they like to add? Always like to hear others opinions and such. Besides, everyone knows that if Beth made it so "Warriors" couldn't Shield Bash or Power Attack with only 1 stamina, and required them to have a precised number, they would take an arrow to the knee and Q.Q haha. :P Thanks all!

I don't trash talk other people's play styles. I working on an archetype seen in the Guide - the Spell Sword - which combines both the mage and the warrior.

It's not about one play style bashing the other, it's just mage took so many arrows to the knee that a lot people who played Mage back in Oblivion or before find it useless now.
Now people find that when comparing to other play styles, Mage is just too weak.

I haven't seen too much bashing of magic by other playstyles. It's mostly by people who actually play mages and are dissatisfied with destruction because of its sub par qualities.

Mage, IMHO, is the only play-style that doesn't get boring for me, the rest are just too repetitive

I think sometimes, some people just like to compete vicariously through stuff.
Players sometimes define themselves through how their character stacks up to other players' characters, and then use that as a means to browbeat other players into submission. :sadvaultboy:

Not saying every person who plays an archetype bashes, but I just see it a lot and it makes me sad. I agree with you Jelf22, people are probably still way pissed that their favorite playstyle is less viable.

Mage is FAR from useless, land an UBER FIREBALL Spell near a sneak-thief that explodes, you find him. Repeat for profit. Or electrocute him with a powerful lighting bolt...or freeze him and strafe from side to side while you freeze him. See how far that sneak-thief gets. That is if you are paranoid enough to land an exploding fireball to every dark corner.

Spellsword is insane. Especially since your destruction perks benefit enchanted items, so I have a sword doing 320 damage with +80% damage enchants on my gear and my 1-hand perks, and an extra 134 magic damage due to fire and frost enchants on it (the enchant counts as both a fire and a frost spell when you have both, so it receives a 100% bonus). Then factor in double dremora lord and -100% destruction cost, and spellsword just rips stuff up.

The hate is on being a pure wizard. The problem is that there is no weapon equivalent - you can enchant your gear, but you can't get any more damage than ~200 from dual casting your expert level spells (I guess a little bit more than that since a target on fire takes more damage, but still). If there was some gear that increased damage dealt by magic, then magic would probably be much more desirable.

"Playstyles" aren't trashtalking magic. People who don't know how to use it are.

I believe that before the crafting skills become involved, Magic and Combat are fairly balanced. Include weapon improvements to the mix, however, and mages immediately fall behind and never catch up, directly because there are no destruction damage improvement enchantments.

Also, from what I can tell, firestorm does about 340 damage when all perks are maxed. If you use a flame cloak beforehand, all nearby enemies will take about 50% more damage, pushing you up to around 600 damage per shot. Unfortunately it has a very slow charge time.

Face it. Mages in Skyrim are like hunters in WOW... even the NPCs trash talk them.

It's very simple, Destruction isn't OP to the point of breaking the game so therefor mages are bad

Single player it is alright, but that's no excuse for it to have unbalances among the different playstyles. Who would want to play as a poorly implemented warrior or mage? It's almost like having the devs say and do something like "oh hey this game will have 2 different classes: the warrior and the mage, but the mage will totally svck and be weak as hell forever, whereas the warrior will always be awesome. So basically, you should play as a warrior despite us putting in the mage class".

^^This. My pure mage never gets hit, and kills everything without doing any direct damage. So mage=god.

Agreed. It can be quite fun exploiting magic reduction via enchantments. Not to mention poisoning enemies and drinking potions to fortify your schools damage and the enemy's weakness to an element to deal ridiculous damage. The master spells can be a lot of fun, but I will always miss spell making.

I find that the best damage dealers for mages are...well...not Destruction. The spell line that does nothing but damage is the inferior source of damage. Summon Dremora Lord, or a well-chosen Dead Thrall just blows Destruction out of the water. A well-placed Mayhen (or even a just barely passable Mayhem) blows Destruction out of the water. A Bound Bow blows Destruction out of the water.

That's the problem. It's like if warriors suddenly discovered that they could do more damage, easier, by shield bashing instead of swinging their swords.

I don't mind the mage playstyle; I just object to the lifestyle. Any man that runs around in a bathrobe in public all the time is not to be trusted.
