It's just game mechanics, honestly.
While realistically, I'm almost completely certain you are right, the very fact that we can come up with consistent and meaningful interpretations, some of which make the story even better than before, means that sometimes we should throw that to the breeze.
Let me give an example from a non-TES thing: In Star Wars Episodes II and III, Anakin Skywalker has an awkward, woodily-acted relationship with an awkward, woodily-acted political idealist. Realistically, it's because the acting was substandard. However if you wanted to see it as Anakin being a cloistered warrior-monk and Padme being a sheltered little princess, doesn't that make their dialog at least a little bit better?
