Why do Americans celebrate Columbus Day?

Post » Fri Mar 25, 2016 11:58 am

Like I said, hate all you want, if it makes you feel better/superior. Judging the acts of anyone by the standards of today is rather pointless, don't you think? So what, I say again. 99.9% of ALL PEOPLE back then were cads by today's standards.

PS: Criticism is one thing. Your posts are hateful. Anyway, I don't celebrate the day. Just like I don't celebrate most holidays. But I will defend Columbus.

Exactly! Unless someone was there, the "truth" is whatever is popular at the time.

There's two groups. One trying to write actual history, the other trying to revise it to be compatible and cozy with modern agendas.

And you just can not win, I see the oddist bumperstickers at times some touting people that well if you overlook Half of what they actually did are still well to me really bad dudes when it comes down to it.

And yet such venom for a person that well from my best guess the day has been turned into a 10% off sale at the store, and no American Person even brings up (well to me I happen to be here)....... Plus I am having a bit of trouble with why this would be seen as a big U.S holiday (elsewhere) as we were not The U.S. Hell.... Washington and Lincoln have devolved into a linen day sale.

Mutter

Thing again I think were missing a few good holiday like june 25-26...... Thank you crazy horse and sitting bull. So what do I know

Because it's a longstanding tradition that we have celebrated for years?

Columbus may have committed atrocities, but it's still been a tradition and is still taught to little kids that 'Columbus sailed the ocean blew! And discovered America!'

You could simply not teach falsities like a solid half of the stuff they teach that, if lucky, is corrected during one's high school years.

Like the crap about how the lovely Pilgrims and "Indians" shared a feast on Thanksgiving. There are plenty of other truths that could do a better at teaching social lessons about sharing, kindness and working together than outright lying.

When you teach history it's best to actually teach history. Hell the schools could very easily incorporate sociological and anthropological topics into their elementary curriculum. Any country (USA especially) would benefit a hell of a lot more from sociological understanding than some idealizations of murderers.

If you can't teach the truth then you're not teaching anything. What is the major problem with that? Kids understand a lot if you lay it out for them, not really something to be prudish about imo. I mean are you going to hide all the National Geographics away because there are bare briasts in it?

Not to single you out, but this same point has been made several times in this thread and it's pretty ridiculous. Like its the 1400s so murder, genocide, torture, and raep were all misdemeanor atrocities back then. These acts were deplorable in any time.

"Cads." Like Hitler, Ceausesco, and Slobodan Milosevic were all just cads. Cads sounds positively romantic.

What are the "standards of today"? Morality isn't some new concept that was born in 1961. People that have evolved past their animal ancestry know right from wrong, and cultures have acknowledged that through laws and practices for thousands of years. Why does Columbus get a pass just because his life and career have been whitewashed by school textbooks for many years? And what is hateful about wanting people to know the actual truth and not a fairy tale?

The story will change many times. Each generation rewrites history in its own image. Our attitudes about history say more about us than they do about history.

I really wasn't joking, but killing Mormons can't possibly be considered an atrocity. I mean they come right to your door, you could always positively defend yourself saying it was a stand your ground law type deal. Same with Jehovah's Witnesses and Girl Scouts.

Now where's my Idi Amin bumber sticker dammit?? *looking that up on Etsy*

Not everyone back then were literal murderers and pillagers. Anyway, my posts haven't been hateful toward you in the slightest. Toward Columbus, of course. He deserves nothing but hate. It doesn't make me feel superior to hate him at all; assigning that motive to my mindset has been something you've insistently reiterated all throughout this thread, but there's no truth to that accusation in the slightest. It's simply the logical emotion to feel towards him after you've become aware of the undeniable atrocities he committed.

Simple.

Me: Christopher Columbus had this fascinating idea to simply go west to India rather than go around the continent of Africa. There was just ooooone tiny little problem. That was the problem. Now, keep in mind that this was before the age of Internet, iPhones and all that other stuff. No one had any idea that was there. For all they knew, it was like this. That's what the world looked like to them.

While he was an amazing explorer in a lot of ways, he was...well...a greedy jerk. He cared more about looking for gold than getting along with the Natives actually living there.

-----

See? That's just a bit of what I'd tell them about Columbus, recognizing both sides of Columbus. It's possible to teach kids the truth rather than showing them only one side.

Apparently Columbus day has more to do with the celebration of the Italian-American community than

the discovery of America. Christopher Columbus was Genovese.

Ah... Yes... The Pilgrims slaughtered the "Indians" and ate them, right? Is that the History you're speaking of?

And tell me, what is the "actual history?" Were you there? Do you actually "know?" Or is it more picking and choosing what "fits your agenda?"

Well, "owning" another human being is generally looked down upon today, but a mere 150 (or less) years ago, an accepted possession. Having six willy nilly was at one time a "bad thing" with societal consequences. Today? Celebrated and funded by the Government. At one time, family was the most important unit of human civilization. Today? The individual tops all. Religion used to play a huge part of society. Now, it is scoffed and scorned.

Morality is not a "new concept." The definitions have definitely changed, though. What Columbus did was commonplace and acceptable behavior back then. Today, look at the posts vilifying him :)

"Everyone" matters not. "Acceptable Behavior" is the key here.

How does it feel to Hate. Yes, young Jedi... Embrace that hate... Come to the dark side....

I know you're not hating on me. But I am not a person that condones hate towards anyone, with a few exceptions. Especially someone changing the rules after they depart.

It's true. Kittens died each time you failed to multi-quote. You committed multiple posting induced genocide. Or something.
