So.... why are we fighting?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 3:10 am

If I remember correctly... we never really have a purpose for doing what we do. We're told to do this/that by some old guy and we just do it. No rescuing a damsel in distress. No vengance mission for your murdered girlfriend. No slaughtered family type of deal.

Will we see anything like that in this one? Or are we doing or deed just for the hell of it?

Just like before, we're doing it because Bethesda says so. :P

...This is a roleplaying game that is all about making your character be who you want to be. Why are we fighting? I have absolutely no idea why YOU'RE fighting, but I have a perfect idea of why my characters do what they do. The whole point of playing is to figure that out for yourself. Use your imagination.

In Oblivion, you're saving the world from certain destruction at the hands of a Daedric Prince. Self-preservation can be reason enough.

There is always motivation... If a man asks you to help him gather a rare staff in a dungeon, so he may sell it to buy money for his sick wife, we help him out of empathy. Or if we are synicle little pricks, we kill him and feed him to his dying wife slowly after turning him into a stew.

I have yet to come across a quest where a guy says, "Oh hey, can you go kill this Goblin king over in that cave. I just heard he exists, so you should go kill him. Just Cause. (2)" They always have a reason, I don't get where you see a spot there isn't.

That's the point of the game. Your character does it for their own reasons. Usually it's not to be killed but you can decide your own reasons as you RP. That is the glory that is TES.

Or would he? Hmmmm... You might want to ponder just where you are sitting right now :)

I'm sure there is no dragon trying to devour the world that only they can stop so I don't see how it is really relevant.

Isnt that the wonderful thing about TES is that you don't have to do the main quest?

And when or if you decide to do the main quest you can invent your own reasons?

I mean my characters were never forced to do them.

Indeed. I relish the thought of doing nothing relevant to the main quest when I start my Skyrim character. It is a becoming a tradition for me to do the main quest last in Elder Scrolls games. Let the sitting on my proverbial butt commence!

Yes, the core of role playing. But I'm sure we will be told we are the last of our kind, the world needs us, we are unique and must fulfill the prophesy!!! OMG! I am already working on a main quest delay mod...

Hmm i dont think you understand "for the greater good"
And to save the world obviously, rescuing a damsel? Weak and a small little stupid thing no big "this matters" vengance mission? dosent matter at all.If nothing will really happen if you fail that effects everything it isnt going to that good of a story, So far every TES and fallout has had the "for the greater good" or "if i fail the world is destroyed". So i dont think any TES or fallout or any other Bethesday game will have one of your ideas of "why to do it".

Because all TES heroes are brutal sociopaths that have no qualms about murdering hundreds if not thousands of bandits, marauders, wizards, and wildlife.

well considering the world is going to be DEVOURED by a GOD... yeah, we're just doing it for absolutely no reason at all.

lets go slay beasts who are threatening all of mankind... just so we're not bored to death while we're being devoured!
