Laser Pistols are not wussy if you mod them. Here is a fully modded laser pistol, which will do lots of damage with the gun perk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5fanPvEB-M

they are definitely not up to the military standards of the AEPs found in the wasteland.

but you can get them VERY early on and they make good semi-automatic ranged weapons if you dont like the muskett.

lol its funny because they are blu-ray.

OP ment the institute weapons. the ones that fire the blue beam.

They are the same or similar damage as any other laser rifle or pistol in the game, as far as I am aware. Fully modded they have good dps, but feel free to correct me if I have the wrong info.

Edit: In short, modding is crucial especially at survival difficulty. Pistols and rifles just won't be powerful enough otherwise.

Regular Laser pistols - high damage, low fire rate

Institute Laser Pistols - low damage, high fire rate

That's the big difference, however if you mod it with a focus mode and turn it into a rifle, it not only fires quickly, but is accurate as hell. So I would say it could balance out in terms of DPS.

That's actually a good point about their soldiers being disposable. If they can't be bothered to fix up their "shells" I guess though don't care if they are using lower powered weapons. I just hope that whenever I eventually do that story line they have some better weapons to use as a faction member.

So you compared a normal weapon to a unique one? I don't disagree that the Institute weapons are inferior in most respects to standard laser weapons, but at least compare apples to apples if you are doing testing.

I thought the same thing when I first picked them up this morning but when i started messing around with them in the modding menu the best I could get was "meh." I have standard laser weapons modded that mop the floor with the institute weapons. I don't find the fire rates particularly high even with mods, OR the damage, OR criticals.

the institute laser weapons are again made from plastic.. how good do you expect something cheaply made to be? the institute thrives on numbers over power of the individual.. they can mass produce synths and easily equipt them with cheap inferior tech but it doesnt matter because they are easily manufactured and disposable.

If you join the institute there is an option to have them focus on better weaponry.. but i chose to focus on synth production so i dont know if changing focus to weaponry has any impact.

The damage on Old Faithful is exactly the same as a standard laser rifle. It just happened to be the only one i had at the time since I dismantled the others. Obviously I considered that it was a legendary but its bonus is to critical damage not the base damage. Previously I had done the same thing comparing a modded Old Faithful to a modded standard laser.

What is your obsession with them being made from plastic? The best materials in the game are plastics. Top tier upgrades for armor are polymers and nano stuff not metal.

How do you go about obtaining that gun. I dying to RP as a James Bond character after seeing Spectre. Could you spoil it for me?

I've also used a standard laser pistol in the past, with pretty much the same result. The damage on a regular pistol is higher and they still use the same amount of AP. The fire rate advantage on Institute weapons is so minimal that it's pretty much non-existent.
