Why are necromancers evil?

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 7:55 am

There's also Aesliip in Bloodmoon. You could talk to him, and he was rather forthcoming and trustworthy. Might not be as strong as Manni, but he was a lich capable of holding back a daedric horde on his own for many years.

Aesliip is a draugr, not a full blown lich. Of course, he coould simply be using a draugr skin as opposed to the lich skin.

He refers to himself as a Draugr, not a lich.

I don't think it matters whether he is a Draugr or a lich. The effect is functionally the same; he's just trying to prolong his own existence indefinitely so he can keep the atronachs from breaking out. I really don't see the difference from a moral standpoint.

Potayto, Potahto. He was a mage necromancer who performed the rituals necessary to make himself undead, where he could continue to use his magic to keep the daedra locked away.

Mer.

In the Elder Scrolls, we don't normally deal with things such as good and evil, they deal with threats. If something is potentially endangering something, it will be dealt with.

I'm tempted not to count Barilzar or the draugr because in both cases they were cursed with undeath as punishment for some transgression in life (creating the mazed band, consuming human flesh), but I'll concede the point about Aesliip since, as you mention, he did it deliberately for a good purpose. People like him are few and far between, however.

It all comes down to that whole "murdering people to get test materials" aspect.

Bad non-mages just become petty bandits. Bad mages become freakin' megalomaniacs drunk on power.

If you were running an illegal/heavily ostracized practice in a hidden location, and some joe just comes gatecrashing in, how would you react?

If some megalomaniac necromancer is kidnapping and murdering random people off the road in some anti-Arkay ritual, or just as practice cannon fodder by a band of nutso pyro/electro/cryomancers, or into a cave where necros trying to summon FREAKING POTEMA and you waltzed in and found out about it, how would you react?

They aren't. They practice magic that is not understood by most people and generally people dislike their ancestors being dishonored. I think it is more of a situation were evil magis happens to be necromancers because from what I gather there is a lot of power to find.

When a necromancer animates a dead body, he uses a fraction of his own soul to do so. This is why most Necromancers can't maintain more than one animate at a time.

It's considered "evil" simply because the dead are sacred... in other words, necromancy is taboo, not actually evil.

Honestly, the problem with necromancy is that its practitioners are less then ideal people that should be raising the dead in the first place. I do honestly believe that a good number of necromancers we deal with are more often then not deeply disturbed people who are two winks away from the Shivering Isles. I mean first your shunned if not flat out run out of society by your practice, you decide to hold yourself in a cave. With corpses. Lots of corpses. "I see no problem with this." The average person would start losing it after sufficient amount of time too, especially if their motivations aren't to further the study of raising the dead to do god knows what.
