Why are Orcs and Imperials so Unpopular?

Post » Wed Oct 19, 2011 10:23 pm

In my personal opinion though, as a Imperial lover I can understand why people find they boring, they do seem rather full of it and they seem like an establishment which needs to be brought down. The thing is, thats actually why I seem to like them, because they are just like me, as in arrogant, pompous, can conquer a continent by charm and diplomacy, genius basically.

Orcs, I can also understand why people don't like them, they must remind everyone of the bully of the schoolyard back in primary school, big and ugly, with the IQ of a peanut.

Imperials are average at everything, and the most standard human race. Which makes them rather boring. Besides I just came from Cyrodiil, I'm sick of Imperials. :P

stat-wise orcs and redguards are much alike, but redguards representing black people have a life long membership to the cool club (to quote Christopher Turk)

But with the removal of the class system, that won't be the case anymore, as Todd said, choosing your character will noe be down to how they look, which is good news for Imperial lovers like me. :celebration:

I wonder whether or not the poll outcomes would have been different if Skyrim was the first TES game and we only had the preset faces and short descriptions of the races. I think the Orcs were portrayed very poorly in Oblivion, making them ugly bright green pansies. People could be tired of Imperials since they're the dominant race in Oblivion. I suggest we'd make a race poll in about half a year from now, I think we'll be surprised by the results.

I've never really liked the way TES Orcs have been designed (even now in Skyrim).

As for Imperials, I hated the pre-set faces in Morrowind... and it seemed kind've boring playing as one in Oblivion (a game set in their home province). I'm actually leaning towards playing as an Imperial in Skyrim though.

I usually do an Imperial play through for roleplay purposes but personally I don't think there is anything distinctive about either race.

Because TES orcs are not really orcs, they are harmless Shreks. And Imperials are unpopular because they don't have any spectacular racial abilities. The moneymaking ability in Skyrim is so uninspired. Oh, and they are ugly.

I agree, I also had a thought along similar lines. Players of TES have probably had enough of Imperials since Oblivion was full of them, Orcs did look like pansies I must agree. Taking a race poll in a year or two's time would yield very surprising outcome I must also agree, I think Nords may find themselves down the pecking order after that time.

Imperials are rather boring and only good for a Merchant RP and Orsimer aren't my type because I prefer Archer-type characters.

These are my two favorite races to play with. I am torn between the two for Skyrim. I'm leaning toward and imperial.

This is the first time that Orcs look appealing to me. The screens I've seen make them seem aesthetically nailed on as descendent Elves.

In previous games too brutish but now there's more a Calibos in the original Clash of the Titans flick thing going on. They look awesome.

I'll be playing a female orc on first playthrough! Judging from the few preset pictures available, you can make a pretty, yet strong and rugged looking orc :tes:

Maybe if the Imperials got some decent racials bonuses people would use them more, though talking your way out of trouble and making more gold is enough of a racial bonus for me.

I've played through oblivion quite a few times and I don't think I've ever made a character that wasn't an Imperial. When I first started playing Morrowind years and years ago, my first few characters were Redguards. I think I went to Dunmer after that with a few imperials along the way. I like playing a Dunmer in Morrowind because of the irony. Native Dunmer hate outlander Dunmer more than any other race.

So it depends on the game, I've never felt a "reason" to play an Orc. I'll probably start off with an Imperial or Nord in Skyrim. After I learn the game, I might play something else.

... and Bosmers are badass.

OK, while this is a good question, I just can't let this comment go... Bosmers? Badass? After Fargoth and the Adoring Fan, my skin crawls every time I hear their squeaky little voices

One of my favorite quotes from Oblivion, Anvil: "The shipmaster, Heinrich Oaken-Hull, has a wood elf for a wife. I'd rather sleep with my horse."

Oblivion was my first TES game and my first character was an Imperial as well. I played other races on subsequent play-throughs, and I may have ended up putting more hours into an Altmer character, but I think I will choose an Imperial for my first playthrough with Skyrim as well (either that or a Nord).

I like to RP with a character I kind of envision as myself, as much as possible. The imperial race represents my own background most closely.

imperial and dunmer are my favorite races. in video games i like to portray myself and IMPERIAL is the most logical human comparison to me. plus they do have the roman feel to them, and they are an EMPIRE :D even in MMOs i play humans because i'm a human :P
if i do feel the need to not play as me, i'll be a dunmer :D
i also like kahjiits, but not as much as the other 2 :P

I'm still baffled how people are getting this aggregate data from. I think I've seen a "Why are ____ so unpopular" for every single race in the past couple months.

Cause that's all Imperials have. Money-making skills. Any their race is part of the Empire, whislt the natural human spirit seeks to rebel. Thus, the majority of players do not Prefer the Empire to the Stormcloaks.

I like the Orcs a lot more, now that they actually look how they're supposed to. However, since the game does not center around them as it does the Nords, nor do I use a furious berserk strategy with ANY of my characters, I will not be playing them.

Stealth is my game.

Thanks.

I'm just about certain I'll play with an Imperial. Its just that the Orcs looks so freaking good in Skyrim.

I feel like Imperials are the closest to "humans" and it makes it so that I am role-playing a man on an alien planet. At least to some degree. It gives me that Return of the King-type feeling about being the Dragonborn.
