Why are people so against V.A.T.S.?

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 9:14 pm

A number of us do not like VATS due to the insane DR (~90, IIRC) you get while in it, which makes it usable as an 'I Win' button.

Indeed. With the FWE mod you can change that value, and for my sneaky sniper character i set it on 10, it effectively prevents using VATS for anything else than aimed sneak attacks. Of course, since i like cheating, i have it on 50% for other characters ^_^

I don't despise VATS but it isn't ideal for me, as BoSS said, it can be pleasant to have a cinematic blood bath occasionally.

One thing I like VATS for is point blank shooting someone in the head with a sniper rifle.
Now that's just super hot seeing the head 'asplode into tiny bits and pieces and see it's red mist fluff out of the severed neck.

Just mostly old f01-2 fans who think its a gimmeck but thats cool everyone has a opinion.

Not really. It seems to be more of a mixture of people that think it's overpowered (I fall into that category) and people that prefer to play the game like a shooter and keep the combat as fast-paced and player-skill-based as possible (not sure why these people play stat-based RPGs to begin with). I really don't think it has anything to do with fans of the old games...not even a little.

I think VATS is really cool, but I also think it needs to be toned down and made significantly less powerful...mostly the DR that comes with it.

I don't like it because it's letting numbers decide something I should be deciding. Whether or not I succeed in combat should be based on my own skill, thank you very much.

Actually since it's an RPG game it should be based on your characters proficiency.

I love VATS its fun to use with the slow mo scenes and gore. But with iron sights in New Vegas I'll probably use aiming a lot more. The main reason I used VATS all the time was because of crappy aiming system outside of it.

Agree 100%. If you want combat to be decided 100% by player skill then you should be playing a pure shooter rather than a stat-based RPG.

I have been reading posts and it seems lots of people do not like V.A.T.S. How people do not like it? I like it because it adds a "turn based" game feel to it, whick I love. I am not much of a first shooter person anyways, so having V.A.T.S. adds more roll playability for me because my character should be good at shooting is good then, not svcking becuase me as a player can't aim properly. :)

So how come you do not like V.A.T.S.? Also if you do like V.A.T.S., I would like to know why as well.

I like V.A.T.S., but I don't wholly depend on it. I like using it when I'm a fair distance away from the target for the travelling bullet scenes... hit or miss. It makes it feel like a movie. I also use it sometimes on a tough enemy to rack up as much damage as possible before going into iron sight.

in an rpg, the skill is mostly tactical, not reflexive. therefore, i concur.

i like VATS and most people use if often, the enemies in FO3 were extremely fast and quick, even raiders and enclave, also most of the weapons were not really designed for first person exclusively and also the combat mechanics in FO3 was kinda clunky so VATS is away of making the game more fun and orchestrating moves etc and i like it a lot. not only that in FO3 the enemis take a lot of firepower to kill usually so to play without VATS entirely is actually a big disadvantage when compared to first or third person shooter games such as GOW, mass effect, MW2 etc. so to play it only in FPS mode isn't the same as play a pure shooter game, its muych harder to kill most of the enemies in FO3 than in mass effect or gears of war etc.so i use VATS when its advantageous for me to use it, now they do need to make the damage you take while in VATS higher i think.

... I don't get it, how does it make it turn-based when only you get a free turn?

Oddly enough I found I died more often in a game where I used VATS as opposed to the one game I tried going completely without it. Since I tried that game I've done a mixture where much of the combat is done without VATS save for some moments when I need something to die or when I just want to make a really cool shot that isn't possible in normal mode. I think my favorite part of VATS was that I could make these super shots that are a lot harder to do with the system in place in normal mode, which fits better if you're supposed to be playing a character who is extremely good with firearms.

Don't get it. When I kick a ball it's not like I'm playing soccer.
I just kicked a ball.
So I have no idea how it can "feel" turn-based when it clearly isn't but whatever.

 100%

One has to ask, "why bother building a PC and giving it a name; why have skills at all"? The answer is that it is a stat-based RPG, and the PC's stats & skills should trump all and be the definitive decider of what can occur.

Exactly. Which is why i always use the automatic tries FWE adds for lockpicking and hacking rather than complete the minigames. The same with Oblivion's lockpicking.

However, Fallout 3 and NV are RPG/FPS hybrids, and i don't think most people would like the return of Morrowind's combat system :D (For those not in the know, first person combat, but hitting was decided purely by character skill and enemy skills, therefore you could stab an enemy in the face at point blank range and miss 10 times in a row.)
