Why are people so against V.A.T.S.?

I disagree, and here's why...

Was joking.

However, Fallout 3 and NV are RPG/FPS hybrids, and i don't think most people would like the return of Morrowind's combat system :D (For those not in the know, first person combat, but hitting was decided purely by character skill and enemy skills, therefore you could stab an enemy in the face at point blank range and miss 10 times in a row.)
I didn't mind it at all, but I didn't play in first person. That is the kind of combat that the entire Fallout series had (even the Spin-off Tactics had it).

Well, some people don't like the idea of a game playing itself for the player, it defeats the point of the game.

But I just like watching people die in slow motion, and the reason why I used it in FO3 was because there was no iron sights system, and now that there's both slow motion kills and iron sights put together. Sooo.... I won't be using it as much. ^_^

This is true, but not true of Fallout.

You die pretty quick in it, if you play that way. Random clicking of targets and poor character development will not let the game offer much in the way of fun. The idea is to build an accomplished PC and play to their strengths.

From an RPGers perspective (like me), you folks who like to play the game like a FPS have to understand that crunching the math and designing an effective character by picking an effective combinations of perks, skills, and SPECIAL stats IS "playing the game" for us.

Yep...building an effective character of a certain type is a big part of an RPG for me, and if my character's stats don't actually do anything in the game that's all pretty pointless.

When people play chess they don't complain that they don't actually get to stab the enemy bishop with their pawn's pike. The strategy is the game.

I love VATS so freaking much that ever since I discovered it I am simply incapable of playing Oblivion anymore.

Yes, but they were traditional third-person RPGs. If the game has a first person viewpoint, i would expect where i'm aiming to have a little effect where the character hits. I point and click, the character shoots and hitting and/or damage is calculated by the skill of the character. I've no complaints about the way Fallout 3 did that. Well, maybe a little about the auto-aim on long distances :D

As for VATS, apart from the god mode, no complaints about that either. Though killing a squad of Enclave troopers with Grim Reaper's Sprint was pretty fun :D

A number of us do not like VATS due to the insane DR (~90, IIRC) you get while in it, which makes it usable as an 'I Win' button. Couple that with Grim Reaper's Sprint and AP boosts and fights become trivial. Alternatively, fight by sneak-sniping and you can clear entire rooms before the opposition gets a chance to respond since your AP refill after each kill thanks to GRS.

Why are you bringing GRS into this? Surely people that don't like VATS (being overpowered) won't get that perk.
People that don't like VATS complaining about GRS are complaining about how other people like to play the game, which makes absolutely no sense.

VATS is the "I win" button due to making the PC invincible. Besides, I can aim pretty well, so I don't need it.

Whereas I can't, so I tend to use VATS in spots where I can't hit the targets very well. (Mostly either hyperactive dodging-all-around-you-at-melee-range situations, or sniping at that raider who has a spastic walking pattern.) :)

I like it because it adds a "turn based" game feel to it, whick I love.

It's not.

I'm not sure how you can argue what "feel" another person gets from a game feature. It's sort of an emotion/opinion thing. /shrug

VATS was clearly designed to give a kind of nostalgic wink/nod back to the Aimed Shot feature of FO1 & FO2. So I'd imagine that some number of people who'd played those games got a bit of "hey, this is like the old turn-based games" feel from it.

I dont know what VATS ya'll are using, but I know it didnt protect me veyr well. when I went to the place where some talon company were in between the buildings with a sentry bot they killed me very bad with that sniper and launcher even with Vats. I like vats because I svck at shooting (I have bad reflexes) and so it helps me not die as much.

I use it sometimes for the cool slomo cam. I prefer to aim manually though.

I love VATS and use it a lot. I'm not a good shot but I'm trying to get better. I'd like to get where I use it 50% of the time but I think it'll take a lot of practice. I use VATS a lot for recon too.

VATS seems like a "God Mode" button.... Until you empty all your APs into a wall, rock, tree, bench, ally or whatever a few times. Better yet the fun glitch kicks in where your first attack goes through and the follow up attacks do nothing but use ammo and APs. VATS is a wonderful tool, but it can "malfunction" at the worst possible times.

I found VATS to be useful only on very rare occasions when I wanted to snipe someone at long-range in a specific body part (like a DeathClaw control mask), and also used it for the great death scenes when I'm in the mood for cool cinematics. But for the other 99.5% of the time I don't use it, I much prefer the 1st person view and to act and play as though I'm really there.

I have nothing against VATS and I think its very well done as a feature, but not for everyday killing.

You know the best thing about VATS? It's not manditory! So, if you're complaining about it, I'm wondering why?? I think it is nice to use every now and then just for change of pace.. and it looks cool, but I don't use it all the time.

I agree/do the same.

I want to use VATS but it's too powerful and turns the game into a lol-fest.

I quite enjoy VATS myself. Glad its there for use when I actually want to use it. Glad its optional when I feel like blowing limbs and heads off more manually. Good times.

From my perspective...: Fallout 3 on the PC.. Vats is almost useless.. You can aim faster and more accurately with the mouse. Fallout 3 on the 360.. Vats is necessary.. You just can't aim as fast or as accurately using the xbox controller. I have the x/y speed controls set to the max on the xbox and on pc they are just a little past the middle. PC just has faster tracking.
I've found most shooting games I've played to be immensely easier on the pc thanks to mouse and WSAD.

Vats is obviously going to feel badly implemented to those playing the game as a Shooter. People who take guns as a main skill. I like playing non-combat characters. Characters who basically act like I would in a given situation. I'm not going to run into an area guns blazing. I'm going to sneak around an area and if someone starts shooting i'm running towards the nearest cover/remaining at a distance and sniping.. or trying to hide. .. It's much more of a challenge getting through areas when you don't focus on combat and Vats is a life saver in those situations where you need it.

Nothing against vats but I do feel it was a little of a "cheat" sometimes

I dont know if this is just me but My fallout 3 for xbox 360, if you used VATS with a fatman, no matter how close you are, you didnt die.

also if you havent noticed while in VATs all the actions of the enemy your aiming at are slower. i saw this once when three mutants attacked me, I used VATs on only one of them and he was moving like it was the matrix and the other two moved at normal pace

Nobody should really be against it. It's a single player game so it it's not like it gives anyone an advantage over someone else, and if they don't like it, just delete the key bind so you don't use it :)
