Why are people so cruel to Lydia?

I personally think Lydia is cool and she tries to do her best to protect you and even die for you. Why do people like to make fun of her?

Because she is most people's introduction to the always clunky, often funny, mostly frustrating companion AI.

Yes, oh great and mighty Thane? Is there something you need? Can I carry your weapon? Shine your boots? Backrub, perhaps?

I used to have Lydia for a while, now I got Aranea and she's awesome! (she's less annoying, but more creepy in a way...)

I tried talking to Mjoll the Lioness and she won't tell me to get her sword! So I can't have her as a companion..
how did you get her? Just get the sword and bring it to her?

So you have to marry her first to get her to be your companion? That's weird.. and I'm using a female character so.. I don't really wanna marry her. LOL Thanks though!

This. Not the Fus-Ro-Dah part--it hasn't quite come to that. Yet. I really want a command of, "Kindly move your sizable Nord butt out of my way". And the "I'm sworn to carry your burdens..." comment when all I'm trying to do is take stuff *off* of her or give her some nice armor and/or a weapon to use. And I'd really, really, seriously appreciate it if "Wait here" actually worked. Ask her to wait so you can be all stealthy and bring the numbers more in your favor, line up the perfect bow shot and watch Lydia charge in to take on a bunch of enemies. Sigh.

I told Lydia to wait here and she didn't. It was Black Friday so she probably went shopping. Haven't seen her since. She was carrying some pretty good bling too.

I've grown quite attached to her in previous playthroughs, but I still think she's hilarious and thick as a brick most of the time. Moaning whenever you want to so much as give her a healing potion, running out and attacking while I'm doing my cautious sneak archery thing, blocking hallways with her giant mass and just staring at me while I head-but her chest trying to get her to move, always lagging behind when we go out etc. Most of the times I completely lose her for ages when we're out on foot, then I think I can hear a horse trundling up behind me and nope, it's big ol' Lydia, back from wherever she wandered off to.

I have a love hate relationship with Lydia on one end, I like her. She's always been helpful in battle with me alongside my Dremora Lord. But on another hand:

-I purposely avoid floor traps, but who do you know bumbles behind me? Lydia and she activates the traps all the time. I made a nice enough path for her to go around the trap, instead she steps on it. Either killing us in the process or waking something dead from ahead of us

-I'm sworn to carry your burdens *shudders* That one line. I am giving you Ebony Mail alongside an enchanted sword that I spent time on. As much as you're helpful in battle, why do you sound so sarcastic and the attitude is not needed. Especially after doing half of my journey with Lydia around.

-She's nearly killed me about four times. She always sorta blocks entrances and exits. And one time we were getting mob so bad. I was trying to back away and got caught between Lydia and a Draugr Overlord. She is so lucky I was able to escape. Or in another essence I have killed her because she runs into my "Rune Traps" when trying to aggro enemies. I learned now how to beat her to it and not kill her. It requires slow time and run as fast as you can.

I save her butt, charge in when she's stupidly ignored my polite request to wait and take out banditry/bears/dragons/whatever-stupid-thing-she's-decided-to-hurl-herself-at-*THIS*-time and that's as close to respect as that impatient, sweet-roll stealing, ruiner of my sneaking, whiny-toned wench is going to get. And trust me, very shortly Lydia can either sit in the unemployment office or sit around my house stuffing her whiny yap with sweet-rolls.

ETA: what ForlornProphet said. I really like the time I was on the edge of a sheer cliff face looking down and Lydia decided to "accidentally" bump into me sending me into the abyss. Shortly thereafter, she tripped a pressure plate trap in a dungeon and got herself slammed with a mammoth skull on a rope. I laughed. A lot.

The only good thing about Lydia is the line "I am sworn to carry your burden" said with a slight undertone of sarcasm.

The issue with that line is I'm not trying to give her my burdens. I'm trying to give her good armor and a good sword, to make her awesome and so that way she doesn't die. I always giver her health potions and make sure her sword is charged.
