Fear is basically an instinct that's there to protect us from harm. Many things frighten humans instinctively. The fear is natural, and does not need to be reinforced in order to terrify. Humans are afraid of the dark because predators/animals might hide in it. We are afraid of heights because, well, we might fall and die. We are afraid of dead things/skeletons because they mean that something deadly is near, or the corpse might carry disease. These are all instincts that remain from the days of living in the african savanna, eating berries and plants.
But then, I've started thinking about fear. Scary creatures in movies, stories, and pictures mostly have these things in common: Pale white, long faces, messed up/no hair, black empty eyes or none at all, long teeth, and claws. To help you know what I'm talking about, I'll post these 3 images (yes they are creepy, you don't have to click on them if you don't want to. Just remember that it's an ancient instinct pumping adrenaline through your body, and that they're photoshopped. :) )
Can't get the images to work. I'll fix'em later.
Same thing with ghosts. Why do they scare people? They're just transparent humanoids who float around and moan. What happened, deep in the hidden eras before history began, that could effect the entire human race so evenly as to give the entire species a deep, instinctual, and lasting fear of pale beings with dark, sunken eyes, razor sharp teeth, and elongated faces?

Well, remember the Danny Phantom "ghost scream/moan" from that nickelodeon game? That scream straight up killed people.

Those worked. Thanks. Not scared!

Considering I live on the old grounds of a nearly 300 year old http://www.fenwickhall.com/, let's just say I have encountered some very strange occurrences. The most "paranormal" of which are closed doors rattling in jambs. I didn't freak out as badly as the dog, but it did raise my hackles. I was unnerved but not frightened.

The experience is hard for me to articulate. I don't know, it was just... A brief glimpse at another reality for lack of a better word. No "ghost", just some unknown force effecting an inanimate object like that was enough of an aberration to put me off from actually witnessing the real deal.

I ain't scared of no haint.
Likely because I haint never seen one.

Miles, not really wanting to change the subject but it sounds like a great place to swing a metal detector....gotta be lots of goodies buried in the entire surrounding area....and protected by laws that prevent such activity.

I'm a serious sceptic when it comes to ghosts, demons, and all that. I'm open to being proven wrong, obviously there has to be something to all that.
My real question is this: If a ghost/demons can make a picture fall off of a wall, chairs rock, throw stuff across rooms, etc. Why don't they just kill people? I would think scaring people for eternity would get really boring, and if their reason is we're disturbing their home why not just kill us? That would get people out of that house quick and I doubt anyone would move back in anytime soon.

What's the fun in killing them? I think if ghosts are real then they must be really bored and they like to have their fun on us foolish living.

What happened, deep in the hidden eras before history began, that could effect the entire human race so evenly as to give the entire species a deep, instinctual, and lasting fear of pale beings with dark, sunken eyes, razor sharp teeth, and elongated faces?

Well the first 3 could probably be related to the plague, any plague really as long as many humans were killed and so we're afraid of pale things with dark, sunken eyes. As for the other two, I don't know, but think about it, it is creepy and unnatural, maybe we're just sickened by the thought of a cross-species creature?

I'm not the kind of person that denies paranormal experiences, but I'm not jumping to conclusion as to what it is. Ghost stories and the like are just ways to try to grasp what a phenomenon might have been. Until we can find an explanation, and we always find one no matter how long it takes, we will never know what is paranormal. The brain has funny ways to reinterprete event too obscur for its sensors to something familiar. Take http://www.islandnet.com/~see/weather/elements/stelmo.htm, for instance. For centuries it was believed to be a sign of protection because bad things were about to happen at sea. Now we know better.

In the past, there were stories of floating balls of fire "roaming" around creepy cemeteries. Imagine the chat about that. Now, we know that those fireballs were actually burning gas of decomposing corpses. With todays coffins, it doesn't happen much anymore. (Sorry, no reference here).

The point is what might elude us for now doesn't mean it's beyond scientific comprehension. Paranormal is just that, it's beyond the normal we know -- as of now. But technically... it's normal, since it happens from time to time.

What we don't know is scary, but luckily, there are a few humans out there that are curious enough to dig deep into those things and find answers for us.

When you see a video game playing itself, let me know. Surely ghosts are Elder Scrolls fans, no? :P

Honestly, that's pretty cool... and too creepy for my timid mind. :cold:

Meh. If I actually saw a legit ghost I'd be freaked, but all the Ghost Hunters BS and superstitious crap can take a hike.

Also, there is no such thin as a supernatural event. If something happens, then it's possible for it to happen, making it more or less natural. Only what can happen happens, and if it does, then it isn't supernatural, or paranormal, or any of those terms, but possible.

"Oh hai, I'm dead, would you like some tea?"

Not exactly a situation that I'd be entirely comfortable with TBQH.

I'm very open to the possibility of ghosts and whatnot, I just don't believe a word that comes out of other people on the subject. It's funny how they have a tendency to be writing a book or making a show about it.

If I were to have an experience, though, I'd probably be more fascinated/shocked by it than scared.

I'm always terrified of ghosts. They always take aways your lives and get in the way in you're trying to eat all of those delicious mints. Not to mention ruin your high score. Inky, Blinky, Pinky, and Clyde have caused terror to me for years.
