Because people have diverging tastes and ideas of what constitutes a good game and a good Fallout game in particular.
For some who literally grew up with Fallout a lot of the design decisions made since Fallout 3 have been detrimental to the core ideas of Fallout.
Quite a few people also never played 1, 2 and Tactics and started the series with Fallout 3. They might have never appreciated the earlier games because of their "outdated" graphics, game design etc.
So... tastes and opinions differ. And that's okay. And it's okay to be an "old naysayer" and silently or vocally hope for a Fallout more similar to the early games.
What's not okay is ridiculing other peoples opinion just because you happen to disagree. Grow up and learn civilized discourse. Then again, this is part of the internet...
[Not that I mean OP is ridiculing anyone. Just a general opinion.]
People have different tastes. I personally don't think there are many people at all who genuinely believe they won't enjoy the game. We're all really excited for it. But the forums are for discussion, and we like to discuss what will make the best Fallout game possible. There's only so many "I'm so hyped!!!" threads you can have.
What I'm saying is: I wouldn't take the complaints on here to heart. There are certain things I complain about, but to be completely honest none of them bother me too much because they're outweighed by all the amazing things in the game.
I don't think there's anything wrong with being critical of a product you have an interest in. BGS is my favorite developer and Morrowind is my favorite game of all time. That doesn't mean I'll be a blind follower and over hype every game they release. I expect results and excellence. If there are features or parts of the game I'm skeptical of, I'm going to bring awareness and see what others think. Constructive criticism is what BGS wants, more bad than good so they can improve their games. Especially once we play Fallout 4, it will be crucial for them to have a sense of what they did well and where they can improve next time.
Hey I'm not pessimistic just cautiously optimistic.
This is no flame bait either, But I am just wondering, we have seen so little of the game yet and what we have seen could as well end up to be a different experience compared to the finished game - see Oblivion ... so I'm curious why are some of you being so quick to hype it ???
Having different views is fine, even strong dislikes.
All I would hope is that such views are articulately expressed,
focus on tangible discussion points,
and if they are simply generalised dislike that they are not repeated ad nauseam...
And it has already happened in this thread.
I'd rather see a forum with people that are skeptical and critical rather than one that is just showing blind praise for everything Bethesda does. Not saying there is anything wrong with being excited with the game, but those who are overly defensive or complain about complainers aren't a whole lot better than some of those who are overly pessimistic.
I myself look forward to playing the game, but still remain skeptical about it in some areas. And in order to sate my curiosity of such changes made, I await playing and experiencing it for myself before coming to a proper conclusion.
There's a few things that I don't like that are going to be in this game, voiced main character and town building. Now, does that mean it's going to be bad? No, it doesn't.
Are these things enough to keep me from playing the game? No, their not. The town building is COMPLETELY OPTIONAL, and not shoved in our faces that we have to do it, so we can either build a town or not(I've already decided that I have no intention of building a town). The voiced vault dweller is not something we can easily avoid, unless Bethesda includes an option to turn off the voice.
I'm willing to give this game the benefit of the doubt and give it a shot.
I actually find the proponents of the original Fallout ethos to provide some of the most articulate, perspicuous, and equanimous arguments on these forums.
The problem isn't that the old Fallout died, it's that its legacy and lineage may as well have.Fallout 4 is tenuously (at best) an ancestor to the original Fallouts, it's a series that has been forcefully amalgamated with the Elder Scrolls and retains a mere paucity of its sole and original ethos.
The indignation towards this conflation of Fallout and TES is an attempt to abate the complete mutation of the series.
This isn't the strident demands of a fervent and quixotic denomination, it's the supplication for compromise, a portmanteau between new and old Fallout and not just something that is transmuting into ostensibly The Elder Scrolls with every iteration
Pessimism can provide that wow factor later down the line, Whereas Optimism provides more chance of being let down.
I think its more important to be neutral or slightly optimistic when it comes to AAA game launches nowadays. Don't pre-order, buy day 1 if you want ofc. I don't want to get swept away in the hype, high expectations can ruin everything. It has happened with a few games for me, last game was TW3 this year. When it comes to Fallout in general, i think that Fallout 3 is a great sequel to the original Fallout while New Vegas is a great sequel for Fallout 2. Bethesda's take on Fallout is well done in my opinion, but i know i am in the minority on that. So i am optimistic for this game, and i will be buying it day one. I can't speak for anyone else though.
I'm pessimistic because of the lack of information and the hype that has built up in people's minds due to it. I just get the dark feeling that the final product either won't match the hype or there is a reason they aren't showing us uncut gameplay footage for the multitude of fans to pour over. However I am a worrier by nature so...
