Why are there no vehicles in Fallout?

Post » Fri Jun 22, 2012 11:47 pm

It seems strange that there would be no form of transport in the world, is there any reason for there not being any? I think a jet pack would be good in F4, the technology is not beyond anything we see in the previous games....................

-In Fallout 2 you can travel in a car powered by Microfusion cells.

-In Fallout Tatics you can drive vhicles.

Technology is not an issue, but the setting doesn't lend itself well for excessive vehicular gameplay.

I would. This is an idea I posted in one of those topics.
Drivable Vehicles:
I would like to be able to drive around the Wasteland in some sort of vehicle. To me a good vehicle would be something like http://i00.i.aliimg.com/photo/v0/10870168/4_Seat_Invader_Dune_buggy.jpg and http://jacque.frusetta.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/4-seat-street-legal-dune-buggy-for-sale-641.jpg Just like the car in Fallout 2. It can be powered by Microfusion cells and be used for storage.

You would be the person driving it, but your companions would be able to fire their weapons from it. Most 2 handed weapons they would be able to use. If your companion is a Super Mutant they would have to hang onto the back of the vehicle. Which would cause it to flip very easily. You can find a trailer to hook up to the vehicle to pull them around in.

If I'm out of the vehicle and I fast travel to a town. The vehicle would be somewhere around the town. You can find it by looking at your mini map which would be marked by your compass.

While not inherently a bad thing, I'm sort of iffy about vehicles. Considering the engine that Bethesda's using, they will be difficult to get working properly. Plus, our character should not start out with one. Realistically, vehicles would be an expensive and limited commodity. I'm not sure I want them to even bother putting resources towards it. And I'd have to say no to the jetpack, because IMO, they're sort of silly and would be equally difficult to implement, if not more so.

A jetpack would lead to all manner of getting stuck in or on terrain as well. It'd be a nightmare.

But wouldn't it be fun riding a motorcycle/dirt bike around in the wasteland screwing with people, on a area bigger then Skyrim since Fallout 4 is going to be on next gen consoles.

There would be no point in having fast travel. You need to choose, one is just better for RPing. Plus it just isn't very friendly for the terrain, there's too much rubble. Plus remember the Highwayman from FNV. It was pretty messed up.

One aspect of the Fallout series that I like is that it brings the world back to primitive times (almost). Sure there's high tech things, but you still feel like society has lost a lot. Do you get my point?? Therefore why make life easier on your character by putting in transportation?? If they do that then they might as well put in a McDonalds as well.

From a lore stand point; it'd make sense. However, for it to be a viable mode of transport the map would have to be several hundred times bigger than it is in FO3 and FNV, one of the disadvantages to not having a node-map system in place.

Two hundred years after the war and with some scientific prowess, I am sure people can rebuild vehicles.

However, if Fallout 4's game mechanics are more akin to those in Fallout 3/NV (open world/no nodes) I don't think the gameplay would be favourabe towards the inclusion of a vehicle. Unless, it's a huge world that makes a vehicle a viable transport.

Theres the train that the NCR controls in FNV. As well as Vertibirds in FNV and FO3 that are tied to the story, as well as in 1 and 2 if I remember correctly.

I would sort of like vehicles, but at the same time I think it would be stupid.. Maybe if it had some kind of use like in Rage. But the map really isnt big enough for you to actually need it. Only thing I can think it would be slightly useful for is if you wanted to haul a bunch of scavenged items back, but even then you would have to wipe a building the size of a vault clean of everything for it to even be a big issue.

What I would really like to see is fast travel removed, and trains replaced as the method of travel in every major city. Boats too. That way if you had to get from one corner of the map to the other quickly, or world quickly, you could pay a small fee (Or perhaps pay a large fee to get a sort of membership lifetime card thing?). That way it would promote you walking more, and as well as implement a nice vehicle system. Or maybe buses and the like, and every now and then raiders or other gangs would come by and attack it, and you would have to fend them off.

Its not that there isnt any vehicles, its just that its very limited. And how would they get the know how to actually make the vehicles? They would either have to start from scratch or find blueprints of automobiles from the old world, and even then.. /shrug.

But yeah, first things first: The map would have to get bigger. Three times at least for vehicles to actually have a use. But I like a train/bus system better.

The bike is cool. But I'm going with the buggy because:
-A.T.V.
-4 people.
-4 wheel drive.
-You can use it for storage.

You can do the same thing with the Fallout 2 car. But it's not a A.T.V. and it doesn't have 4 wheel drive.

I like the idea of vehicles but I think in fallout (as a first-person perspective rpg) they could only really work as a replacement to fast travel (ala those floating bug things in Morrowind). I'd be concerned that implementing them as drivable vehicles from a gameplay point of view would turn a portion of the game into either some sort of post-apocalyptic racer (like rage) or the pc would quickly end up just driving round running npcs over (like dead island).

I think, currently, the biggest limitation is the games structure. Many areas are separated from the game world, and still maintain open sky access. This would mean flying over it could land you in areas your not suppose to be at. If they did a jetpack at all (I don't particularly care if they added one) it would have to have a very limited flight level. No more than probably around 15 feet. Other than that, it would still mess with a lot of the quest mechanics that require you to walk through a trigger.

I hope the next-gen consoles will allow them to fully merge all cities into the main game world.
It would allow for the staging of true wars, raids, etc. by allowing the defending side to stand on the walls to attack.
Plus, no loading time entering the city.

I don't want to see vehicles in Fallout. A vehicle like the Highwayman had a place in a game with node maps, but in the current games, I can't see any good coming of it.

I'm sorry but a jet pack is just a joke... Unless it's powered by Jet?
And I don't think vehicles should just be threw in for the sake of it they should only be implemented if the fast travel system gets redone, maybe removed all together or use vehicle to fast travel.

There are mods for F3 and FNV that use vehicles as means of fast travel. Some even have a mode where normal fast travel is disabled and the only way to fast travel is with said vehicle.
