why are vampires allied with wolves?

It's more of a rival apex predator thing then an actual hatred. Both are pretty equal in power, both are equally able to kill. It's more of a fight over territory and food then anything else. At least that's how I see the " hate " between the two, I myself out of instinct will rid my territory of any other apex predators so as to lessen the competition for food. Twas Underworld that spawned the popular idea that vampires and werewolves hate each other, but in reality the hate is no different then what's between a bear and a wolf in the wild. Both will avoid one another but will as well defend their territory from each other as well.

The crap that Harkon gets on with is more of his personal view of himself compared to others, not so much vampire compared to werewolf. Harkon is an egotistical psychopath that views himself better then everyone else.

Dracula serves as the inspiration for a number of TES vampire powers and attributes -- for example, the mist appears in Dawnguard as a power Vampire Lords can gain; hypnotism has been present since Oblivion in the form of the Vampire's Seduction power.

I'm betting that the old Morrowind and Oblivion vampires' resistance to normal weapons comes from the scene in the novel where the ship's mate stabs Dracula with a knife, and it passes through him. The boost to acrobatics may have been based on the part where Harker witnesses Dracula crawling down the walls of his castle like a spider.

I know that there's someone on the dev team who's read the book -- some cut vampire content appears to include a vampire hunter named Vlkoslak, a word used within Dracula as one of the words Harker hears the peasants repeating about the Count, which he notes means either "werewolf" or "vampire."

Not to mention Valerica's hairstyle, ripped right from the Coppola Dracula.

***

Harkon considers werewolves inferior to vampires, but really, his disdain is partly to explain why he won't let you keep your beast powers if he turns you.

Yeah man. Back when Dracula was created by Bram Stoker, there was little distinction between the different 'classes' ( ) of monsters.

Dracula was meant as a general embodiment of evil - the werewolf was simply another representation of said evil.

The whole Vampire vs Werewolf bulls**t is pretty modern, and I don't want to mention the all-too-obvious example that most are probably thinking of.

To a certain extent, it's like saying "Ghosts hate Zombies, right?"

Mmm Dracula was such a good novel.

If you want to experience some decent characters concerning vampirism, read Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles.

She creates some very convincing characters albeit a lot of the characters are extremely sad creatures but I think if I was a vampire in real life I too would be conflicted with such moral dilemmas. The whole series is extremely beautiful and complex when it comes to plot and character growth. She just recently published a novel on werewolves too but I have yet to read it .

It would probably be good not to confuse werewolves and vampires with television and movie renderings of them (i.e. Twilight). These are NOT authoritative renditions of valid lore. They are Hollywood variants, and they do not remain consistent with each other, let alone the original lore. Since these creatures are fanciful creations of legend, Beth is just as free as any Hollywood producer to alter them as they see fit. And yes, in ancient times, vampires were thought to be able to transform into wolves.
