Why Are You Reusing Phrases?

Post » Tue Dec 13, 2011 1:58 pm

I was watching http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=vncIBREXCwU, and after witnessing all the different voices they used (Also w/ shopkeepers) I can't help but feeling pissed off that Bethesda didn't bother to have the VA's say different things? Wtf? This was a perfect opportunity to add diversity, but instead they wasted the vast VA's they used.....I don't get it. Not one bit!

I agree
I just can't think of a reason why you would have several voice actors read the same sentence when you can just as well come up with another one.
It wouldn't add much diversity because it's still only 3/4 voice actors for every guard in the game apparently, but this doesn't make sense

I know right. It's the same with certain vendors and blacksmiths etc even though they use a totally different VA they say the EXACT same lines which I can't understand in the slightest.

OK if they were only using a very small handful of VAs like Oblivion it would still be annoying but kind of understandable that they were trying to save disk space but why record the same line twice (or three or four times) using different VAs?

Mhm.

I also thought most voice actors would also be able to do multiple characters/accents uniquely and still sound convincing. But that Farkas guy keeps popping up and he sounds like he's reading a script damnit.
And they should've just added "Hello", "Good day", "Yes?" and all those simple sentances to use besides the unique greetings most NPCs have. Those unique greetings make me want to do horrible unspeakable acts to my own ears.

Maybe it's not laziness. Maybe they have a quirky sense of humor. You have to admit, it is an immediately identifiable phrase that is being used frequently here on the forums. Skyrim meme in the making.

Yeah i was wondering the same thing. They finally get more than 10 VA's, and now they make them say the same things. wtf

Disappointed with the VA variety to be honest.

There is still work to be done and of course there will always be room for improvement but sincerly, they made a huge improvement with the voice acting from Oblivion to Skyrim.

I can understand why they reuse the same voices but the same lines with different voices is a little lazy.

Did they really ask 6+ different people to say the same line?

I love it actually! Without repeated phrases we'd never have classic Skyrim memes like:
What's wrong someone took your Sweetroll?
Some call these junk, me I call them treasures.
and of course let's not forget the greatest line in Elder Scrolls history right next to "Stop right there criminal scum!":
"I used to be an adventurer like you, till I took an arrow in the knee."

I vaguely recall them saying there were like over 70+ Voice Actors for Skyrim in an article but I could be wrong, does anyone remember Bethesda mentioning it?
Every Dark Elf guard in Morrowind sounded the same and all had the same phrases, yet it was never a problem, probably because they didn't talk much.

Because in Morrowind and Oblivion you were greeted as you would be in real life, with a simply hi or hello.

I don't walk up to strangers on the street and tell them about my life story selling vedgetables with my mother until I took an arrow in the knee.

I'm pretty sure I've heard probably less than 20 over my whole time of playing.

They did get 70+ voice actors, but they were dumb enough to only use about 10 of them for all the general voices, think it was 1 or 2 per race and the same for imperials and bretons with some other deviations

The thing is that they totally missed the point when people complained about the lack of voice actors in Oblivion.

I used to make threads regarding Bethesda's lazyness... then I took a ban hammer in the face.

I could see this being intentional to be turned into some kind of meme, but it could have also been a matter of not knowing whose voice they were going to use for certain NPCs and they ended up just using all of the recorded dialogue in the end.

Actor 1 might be used for guard A, but actor 2 might be a good fit as well. You have them both do the same lines and end up using both sets of dialogue when you realize one actor for all of the guards is repetitive as [censored]. Two or three people saying some of the same lines is only noticeable if the player runs into a lot of that NPC type, so I suppose it would take a little longer for the player to catch on.

Yup, the "70 actors" statement was official. For instance:

http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/06/08/e3-2011-the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-has-70-voice-actors-players-free-to-explore-from-start/

Having different actors read the exact same lines is laziness or apathy. No doubt about it. Anyone who thinks its an intentional meme is 12 and never had an office job.

In specific characters in the world, i.e. daedric princes, Alduin, etc.

Oh my god, that was just a joke. Honestly it seems like half of the forum has no sense of humor whatsoever. You may have an office job but you definitely need to get out more :P

Yeah, at the very least for major stuff like becoming Thane - give the jarls some personality.
