Strictly speaking a crossbow is a useless offensive weapon. They were designed to be used by unskilled defenders from a fortified position. They are incredibly slow to reload. Sure, they are a trope of the fantasy genre but I personally don't mind that they left them out.

Because the developers decided not to put them in. No mater what they do, people will always ask "why didn't you do X". They can't do everything. It's not like they left out all bows.

This.

1, Shoot bolt
2. Wait 30 seconds for a very long reloading animation
3. die

they would be next to useless in combat.

Okay the real answer is that they are part of the ever growing stream line (stuff that shall not be spoken of again on punishment of 'cool story bro' comments), list.

Sad but true. :cookie:

crossbows are stronger than bows, and there are perks i the game they could have added instead of 30% faster on bows, they could have done it for bows and crossbows

But bows are already strong as hell. Why would you need something stronger?

Bows are better. You don't have to stand still to reload.

i know i use a bow myself but i would like a different kind of weapon for archery even if it is slow and a crossbow would be a good weapon for getting the first hit whilst sneaking into dungeons

That's actually not a bad point. I just hate to think about anything after that first shot.

Something interesting though, Bolts are in game and can be accessed through the console. The Spheres use them for their crossbows hand things.

A modder might be able to turn the spheres crossbow into one that players can use.

Crossbows doesn't have much purpose in a game with as simple a combat system as Skyrim's.
Crossbows have two primary advantages over the bow.
1: They don't require much training, compared to the bow. You could stick any random peasant a crossbow, and they'd be able to use it fairly well. Couldn't do that with a bow.
2: They are far more effective versus armour. A well made armour would make you almost invulnerable to arrow fire, where a crossbow could penetrate much better. Several Popes banned the use of crossbows against Christian foes because of that. A lowly peasant could suddenly become a major threat to the noble knights in shiny armor.

Both points are pretty hard to simulate within the current combat system, unfortunately.

Crossbows were designed to be used as an 'on mass' weapon, generally used by untrained peasants, militia's or mercenary forces in garrison roles.

A bow however in the right hands can loose 4+ times the amount of shots at increased accuracy, and distance, the pros to a crossbow on the other hand are ease of use and stopping power (much much more force behind a quarrel than an arrow,) ie good against close range armoured foes. The increased speed, distance and accuracy means that a single person can have better use of a bow than a crossbow.

I understand why Beth dropped crossbows (most people dont want to sit looking at their shoe for 15-20 secs while reloading) however i still wish they were in the game, would make for some sweet ranged diversity.

Edit: Ninja'd :ninja: should know not to make a coffee whilest writting a post

According to the wiki you can use the console to give yourself the sphere crossbow. Haven't seen a video of it though.
