Why Is Battlespire So Silly?

Post » Mon Jun 17, 2013 6:04 pm

In comparison to the rather serious nature of most of the games, why is Battlespire come off so corny in the dialogue and voice acting department? Daedra making bad puns and sounding like Jack Nicholson and the like.... Battlespire is great game but wish they would remake it with less silliness to fit in more with the rest of the serious series.

The elder scrolls series has never really been really serious. There are lots of instances of it makeing fun of itself. I find the dialogue to really flesh out the condescending nature of the daedra that they are above us and see themself so superior that they have time to make fun of their prey. I love that in battlespire you can be sarcastic while behind enemy lines surrounded by the biggest bad of dagon's army, the hero of the battlespire is a real badass.

No, Elder Scrolls has always been serious. People tend to think that making the occasional joke makes it non-serious. This is silly.

Oblivion is a very silly place. The Deadlands only seemed all grim and serious in TES:IV because the Dremora were all being ironic and no-one got it. Comedy is not a universal language shared with all daedra, it would seem.

On second thought, let's not go to the Battlespire. It is a silly place.

I liked its stuff. I honestly think that it was the start of TES' metaphysics, and the old Nymic magicks are interesting in terms of all the Thu'umic magicks floating about nowadays.

No sir, I really liked it too so I'm with you. What I don't like was the silly dialogue and voice overs but everything else was fine, accept maybe the graphics.

No..Battlespire was a spinoff game released in the late nineties. The Battlespire itself was a training academy for the battlemages, located in a pocket realm of Oblivion. It was invaded by Daedra led by Mehrunes Dagon late in the Third Era.

This is the definition of Umbriel...

The battlespires are a http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1434209-battlespires-nature%E2%80%A6/#entry22015408...

But the game itself is fun, it's one of my favourite TES games, but it's too hard...

Daggerfall isn't really serious too...

Because there is no better hero than a snarky, condescending newbie battlemage who wrecks Mehrunes Dagon and his forces with the power of Mehrunes Dagon in sword form.

Much more personality than the other heroes so far, at least.

TES is missing a golden opportunity for snark. There's a little opportunity in there, but nowhere near as fleshed out as some of the epic snarker responses from other series like Fallout or KOTOR.

There is an incredible amount of snark in Battlespire. http://www.imperial-library.info/content/elder-scrolls-legend-battlespire-storyline, where the author intentionally picked all dialog options that were snark and/or funny, unless there's dialog that leads to more dialog

I have never played Battlespire, but I have played Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim, and have watched the Arena and Daggerfall introductions on YouTube. I can point to poor voice acting in almost all of those examples (Arena, of course, has no voice acting at all in its intro), so I'm not sure why Battlespire is being pointed out as particularly poor in this respect. Was it really, really that horrible?

Wow, that's....that's one hell of a read.

Somebody ought to make a Battlespire play/reenactment on Youtube or something.

Best dialog of the entire series. Best dialog system. More dialog options than all other games. The jokes aren't that bad and some are in fact a bit basic, like those comments on unusual Daedra body parts (like shaving their tails and stuff like that), but it is ok for an rpg and gives you a chance to enjoy their reactions. It's also one of the few gamesas rpgs where your speech skill maters and you can convince, trick or intimidate most Daedra commanders to stand aside without a fight or even help you in your quest.

Having read through that excellent walkthrough, I have to say that I really, really wish I had the patience to play this game. I don't see it happening (especially if it's that much harder than the other TES games I've played, and it definitely sounds like it is), but if somehow I manage to get a dose of real Willpower one of these days, maybe I'll look into it.

At least now I have as much background knowledge as I'll ever have when I reread On Boethiah's Summoning Day...

Well, it was just some of it was downright silly. If I recall, there's one Daedra who does a rather bad Jack Nicholson impersonation and then there's sixual innuendo regarding appearances and whatnot. It just seems out of place in the TES series. However, Battlespire itself is pretty cool. I wish they would release it on GOG.com.

I've read it several times. If you'll examine my previous post, I acknowledged the Battlemage's snark and personality and lamented that the other heroes are bland compared to him/her.

TES has never been completely serious but it sure is a hell of a lot more serious than say Fable.
