He explains memory and when you create a bigger world, you use up more memory, when you have more
details, Graphics, dialogue and huge world = Memory
the higher graphics the More detail the more you need too add to the memory
A CD can only hold so much space, so maybe when we get stonger CDs we can make better TES games

Actually the draw distance and graphics are really good, even on the 360, doesn't matter anyway gameplay is the most important thing.

Beth release gameplay from consoles to show that the graphics are really good on a system that is not as good as the PC, so that the PC will look amazing and also so that gamers on 360/PS3 don't get their hopes to high on stunning graphics that they won't get.

Ya and the climix is when they show the Argonian killing a werewolf with a spear while riding a dragon screenshot.

More like that.

It was running a crappy draw distance because it was made on a console. Try it on a Good computer with atleast the minimum requirements and then put everything on the highest. You will find the difference without even looking for 5secs

DICE have shown only PC gameplay for BF3. Console gamers are going to be a little disappointed :P

This makes sense, and also take into account the PC version might not be perfect enough for them to show it off yet :)

For me it makes sens to make the game for the lowest common denominator. Not everything in graphics is textures. Polygon-count and animations are also very memory consuming. So they make all the animations, all objects and all the little extra stuff like the animals running around etc. If it works on the slowest hardware it will work on the fastest.
The other way around would be to create the craziest world for the fastest PC and then having to pick what to exclude from the console version making it totally inferior. Now that would piss off a lot of people on the consoles. The point is.. They are trying to create the same experience across all platforms. And i believe i have hears these very words from Todd in an interview somewhere.

We already have 50GB Blu Ray DVDs, but only the Playstation uses them. If BDVDs became the standard on PCs, then we'd be able to move ahead. But it's surprising how much you can fit on an ordinary DVD if you squash it in.

That's a pretty interesting video, actually, I'd like to see Bethesda do something with procedural generation again with modern graphics and game mechanics.

Why don't you imagine it the other way?

The show all the graphics and gameplay on a 20,000 USD dedicated gaming PC, it blows the minds of all xbox 360 players (or merely all the PC players who don't dedicate lots and money to a gaming PC and are using a 6 year old one themselves) and then come release day, they have a product which utterly fails to meet their expectations.

maybe they are secretly adding DX11 goodies and 4096x4096 textures

ROFL! I wish! No, 4096x4096 goodness is solely in the hands of the modding crowd. Fortunately there are some really talented, dedicated modders out there who will undoubtedly get it done.

Not really. They are simply not going to show Skyrim running on a $3000 PC that only 20% of their customers can afford, if not less. They would be misinforming most of their customers if they told them via those screens "hey, this is how the game will look like for everybody", which is not only lying, its a stupid decision, marketing wise.

Looks great for the XBOX 360, scale greatness to a 100% and use your imagination for the result.

In any case high res texture, uber graphics and DX11 are the last of my concerns, I'm all about a fluid, solid and fun gameplay experience.

Thank you, I think. I now know that common sense is lost on some people, even my favourites devs.

Hey it's 2011, let's design a game for 6 year old hardware, then port it to pc and crank up the sliders. That's how to make a sequel to a legacy!!

This >9000
They should of taken the Dice approach aka PC dx10.1/dx11 only you know the good stuff.

Instead modders will have to spend a year or 2 bringing the game up to spec.

Dem usage of high end hardware.

Ya and the climix is when they show the Argonian killing a werewolf while the Argonian in question is a vampire, also the compass is removed and replaced with a directional journal and the pc version is set on DX11 only screenshot.

Right, fixed it for you ;)

ultra fixed

I don't know about what's best and I don't care.

Y'know after all of these discussions about this topic, this pretty much sums up how I feel now

People seem to think that they know more about developing video games than the devs, it's getting really annoying now.

I know!! Haha, they're smart, them Bethesdas. Alright, so..

First of all, i was reading http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1201803-the-draw-distance-gets-far-too-little-credit/, and I couldn't help but think to myself, "Why would Beth show XBOX in the videos/previews, and XBOX in the screenshots (most of em anyways). Why would they show crappy draw distance? Wouldn't the proper thing to do would showcase your best work?"

I know why. Because Beth wants us to, most importantly, get our hopes down, or lowered, so when we get the game and discover that the carrots are weighted, that draw distance isn't as crappy as it looks, that weapons can actually hit targets, that everything isn't as bad as we thought, we'll be excited and go crazy.

I'm probably wrong, but I thought I'd mention it.

Bethesda : Yeah, why don't we just make everybody think our game is rubbish, so no body will buy it and see how good it actually is?
What a great marketing plan!

In answer to OP: Beth doesn't make a dumb-like-a-bag-of-hammers casual FPS like CoD, so they don't have to show 90% of the game before release to attract fans money. (which would be impossible btw :F)

I'm sure its been said before but...

It's because Beth learned long ago from the mistakes if other games that people will cry when their 250$ xbox can't keep up with a 3000$ PC. That's it really. It's not because they can't or don't want to, its because people think it will look amazing even though it was being played with top shelf, not 2005 components.

There no reason to spur this grief when it still looks amazing on the weakest system its on. But if you show more then they'll get, its just asking for teary eyes and a stocks rise for tissues.

In the run-up to Oblivion the graphics were displayed at their best and trumpeted to the entire gaming media. They released screenshots of forests that were more dense and realistic than what actually shipped with the game.

They're not going to show anything that's below-par visually, but they may be carefully lowering expectations, because as anyone can see, the game look marginally better than Oblivion, and already a bit old. Which is fine. Let the modders make new textures and let the devs focus on what matters.

Wrong thread. Whoops. I thought Beth said that all platforms would look pretty much the same, with a little more polish for the pc.
