Why Bretons?

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 5:02 am

Aside from Bretons having a nice boost to magic resistance and magic boost, they look sixy =)

I am a mage class lover, so .....they are a really good race for a mage based class.

I like using magic and looking human.

Bretons are the less elf and lizard looking of the races who use magic alot.

This pretty much. I'll add that I hate elves on top of my liking magic and playing human looking races.

Well, they're Bretons. And I'm British, at least in descent. That is all.

Actually, it's because I choose race based on an individual's personality or physical traits I've panned out beforehand. For example, my randomly generated rogue character who was ported from paper to TES is a Nord, not because of any benefits the race itself might have given me, but simply because she was 180 cm (about 5' 11") tall. My pansy mage-but-doesn't-know-it character is a Breton, since that is the closest approximation that the default races come to his unique physical talents.

And I guess if I want to put my Munchkineering degree to use, I can work with that magic resist. But it's more about building a character outside of statistics.

I play mages, so I normally pick Breton. I picked High Elf once, simply because a High Elf born under the Mage is better than a Breton born under the Apprentice.

The 50% magic resistance is the reason I don't use Bretons. While it was a reasonable perk in Morrowind, an innate 50% resistance to all magic in Oblivion is ridiculously overpowered. Just take a single mundane ring to be immune to every caster.

screw that [censored], if I want a caster I'll play an Altmer.

Well as unbalanced as the races have been I always was a dark elf since they were the only race that seemed interesting besides the beast races

They should appear drastically different. Things like facial features consisting of blue veins of magic energy. They should possess elf and human features. I've always pictured them looking sleepy all of the time too. This or they all look like Jaufree, and I'd be happy.

I noticed in one of the polls that breton was the 3rd most popular race amongst us Skyrim fans. I'm sure Nord was the most popular because of Skyrim's theme, and I'm not sure why everyone likes Dunmer, but thats not what this is about.
I have played Morrowind and Oblivion multiple times, and I never used any race other than Breton. Their attributes just make my typical strategy a lot more simple. Their magic resistance is very helpful, I hate having to develop my character's magic stats, so their magic boosting stats make things easier for me, and their skill in armor and weaponry is low, so that allows me to gain more levels using my typical primary skills.
That being said, I was wondering why some of you like using Breton over the other races?

I used a Breton in Oblivion because of the magic bonuses.

I chose a Dark Elf the first time I played Morrowind, just because I thought they were cool. I had no idea that Morrowind was the home of the Dark Elves. It worked out really well and I'll never forget that.

I personally never enjoyed bretons. My favorite are the dunmer followed closely by nord! I might go replay Oblivion as a vampire magical breton!

They really need to make them distinct this time or they will continue to be the most unrecognizable race in the elder scrolls series.

I like Breton cause they're one of the better looking races. Dunmer was my primary fav in MW but they ruined them in OB maybe they'll make a comeback?
Nords seem like they would be really fun to play this time around cause its their homeland, I might give it a go.

But yeah, Bretons have good magic resist + atronoche sign and you're practically immune ^.~

Maybe there will be a High Rock game some day. :)

 Daggerfall...

On topic I don't use Bretons that often but they are great for reaching high levels sicne combat which is where I mostly level they start low as such I can reach slightly higher levels. And yeah their extra magicka and magicka resistance is very helpful :D

I'm not surprised that Nords and Dark Elves are 1 and 2.

Breton is easily my favorite race. I like all aspects of the race in Oblivion. The +50 Magicka, 50 INT, 50 Wil, etc. The Pale Skin is ok although I hope they aren't changed too much appearance wise for Skyrim. Lore Wise they look ugly, unique but still ugly.

I've never played a Breton, although I found in Morrowind they were one of the races with the 'prettiest' faces, that and one of the female Redguard faces. However since I didn't play mage characters I never found them too enticing.
I would speak for Oblivion's Bretons but quite honestly I never noticed that there was any distinction between them and Imperials. I'm sure If I looked harder there would be but...
And I'm definitely playing a Dunmer for Skyrim. I would usually prefer Bosmer (since my characters are stealth based) but Morrowind was my first TES game and since Morrowind has virtually been annihilated in recent lore, i definitely want to represent them.

Ah thanks...and you too, Broken-Scale. :) I began with Oblivion and never played Daggerfall but I thought it just took place in Hammerfell. See? That's why I'm playing Morrowind now...so I can learn more of the lore. Expect occasional posts by me like the one above...people will help me learn, I'm sure. :) And I'm a Breton in Morrowind too.

Ok, look at it this way. I prefer the Dunmer for a couple reasons:

-Their look. Aesthetics are huge for me as in TES you can quite literally make any character anything.
-Wanna be an archer? Swordsman? Mage? Well, with the Dunmer you can be any of those with the bonuses.
-To me it seems like fire is used a lot in oblivion and the dunmer can resist it very well.

But the Breton is my second favorite race as I love mages but I quite often play the hybrid Mage/Stealth and the dunmer put that role off very well aesthetically speaking. But in TES, its all about what race attracts you, more often than not its by the 2 L's for me. (Looks 'n Lore) But the Breton by far has the greatest (IMO) racial bonuses followed by Dunmer. (Again, IMO)

Well i like magic, and i like bretons because its easy to make a character look like me. Also thats only in ob, in morrowind i can't take that whiny ass voice, its like there screaming "I'm A Target, can't you hear my sissy screams!!!"

Also bretons are my favorite race, i think they make the best battlemages

I usually play a breton. I've played Morrowind and Oblivion with mostly bretons. I think I usually go with them because they have good magic stats and they are human. Imperials' stats svck, wood elves are weird little creatures, the beast races just look funny to me (playing as a creature kills immersion for me), and Nords and Redguards are mostly only good at melee (plus i'm not a black guy so it doesn't feel like I'm playing as myself). Really breton seems to be the closest thing for me to play as myself.

They're magic and they're not Altmer.

They are also half Elven and half human, whichis justa cool idea, and have a coolconcept art design.

But the most important thing is that they are not Altmer.

Other.

In both morrowind and oblivion I wanted to be a mage. The high elf was the 'best' choice but the weakness to magika made it a dangerous choice. So I went with the safer but less rewarding race. Both had magic skill boosts so that wasn't the reason.

It was extremely overpowered in oblivion thought. With mundane ring + sunfire or some other +magika resist I could laugh at any mage.

I always play Breton's. 50% magic resistance is so OP! Plus in Oblivion their voices sounded the best, the rest just annoyed me in combat.
