Why Bretons?

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 12:45 pm

I noticed in one of the polls that breton was the 3rd most popular race amongst us Skyrim fans. I'm sure Nord was the most popular because of Skyrim's theme, and I'm not sure why everyone likes Dunmer, but thats not what this is about.
I have played Morrowind and Oblivion multiple times, and I never used any race other than Breton. Their attributes just make my typical strategy a lot more simple. Their magic resistance is very helpful, I hate having to develop my character's magic stats, so their magic boosting stats make things easier for me, and their skill in armor and weaponry is low, so that allows me to gain more levels using my typical primary skills.
That being said, I was wondering why some of you like using Breton over the other races?

They are OP. You could make the super tank easier with their 50% magic resistance.

I've never cared for Breton. I think people use it because of the magicka bonuses. Or just because they simply prefer Breton.

I like the Magicka resistance they have, and I like how they are a mix of elf and human...I think. If so, I hope they look accordingly in Skyrim.

I always pick a Breton for the 50% magic resistance and fortify magicka. In the end, skills mean nothing because every character can max any skill out.

Their abilities are nice, but it's just the fact they have a british connection, french also, they are a mix of both. And i'm british.
Nords, could also have a slight britishness to them, though mainly scandanavian, but the british have links with them too.
I would have played a nord more if they weren't so tall...I like to roleplay myself in that world, but i ain't 6 foot +. :)
Hopefully the body customisation will allow a little give and take in this area. Like a range: Nord for example 5,8-6,8 etc.

Voted other.

Bretons do make a good paladin class, once strength and endurance is built up.The classic tank: Weapon,shield,healing/holy magic, defensive magic, bretons are great for this class in my eyes.

I said Other because it's All Of The Above. Magic is my favorite thing and the benefit of being Breton can't be beat. It didn't have negatives...remains to be seen if it's that way in Skyrim. :) I've never tried the other races either.

The 50% resist magicka and magicka boosts are the reason I always use them for my mage characters.

First of all, Dunmer are liked because they were the primary race in Morrowind, the game where most people joined TES (And the favourite game of many.)

Secondly, you HAVE to add another option to the poll. Many players don't choose a race because of the stats, but because of the 'feel' or lore of a race. I know I'd vote on that if it was part of the poll. Please add an option for this.

Like Kicenna, all the above. I have played a Breton in Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind and Oblivion. In most of those games, my characters tended to be healers, and priests, etc. It is the magic.

And, as they are manmer descendants, they are the only legitimate mixed breed of which I am aware.

Bretons make the best battle mages IMO. The biggest reason people use them I think is that High elves and Dark Elves are the only other races that are descent at magic form the start. High elves weakness to magic makes them die instantly when someone uses flare, and Dark elves don't have nearly as much magic benefits as Bretons, so basically Brentons are just plain the best battle mages in terms of stats. The one thing about race popularity that I don't get is that the polls say that most people hate Redguards. I don't understand that. Stat wise they are the best warriors in the game at the start. Maybe it's just anti-black racism?

I've never played a Breton in any TES game. I always play a Nord for my Warrior-esque type character, Bosmer for my Assassin-esque type character, and a Altmer for my Mage-esque character.

50% magic resistance, a bonus to magicka and bonus to intelligence and willpower is what I chose. In fact, i like bretons because they are the perfect fit for a battlemage character :goodjob:

Because both Bretons and Dunmers are well-rounded characters, from my experience.

In Morrowind I felt like Bretons and Imperials were the same. In Oblivion I felt like Bretons were more flamboyant versions of imperials.

They just keep going downhill.

  • Nords fit the Skyrim setting and tone of the game.
  • Dunmer are excellent Spell Swords, the best class in the Elder Scrolls games -FACT-
  • Bretons are great pure mages - what's the alternative haughty High Elves?

I like using magic and looking human.

Bretons are the less elf and lizard looking of the races who use magic alot.

I don't think it's racism at all my friend, and not from my view anyway. Like i said,i like to roleplay me in that world, and i'm white,so i don't chose redguard thats all. If i decided to roleplay "blade" ( from the movie ) i would pick a redguard. We like what we like....I like nords ,but didn't pick them because they were too tall, thats just me. I like to make my character as close to me as possible, and i ain't as tall as a nord would be. It's just my way. I hope the body customisation allow more give and take there. Though there is lore,we should be able to adjust the races to our fitting. Like a black guy/woman,may want the stats of a breton ,but have darker skin...it's not racist, especially when basing the character on yourself. I may like the stats of a redguard ,but want white skin, because thats what i have. People have their own ways for picking and choosing classes and races, but that doesn't mean they are racist. We should have more customisation with al races, maybe a little work around the lore. Though it's stated that mixed races take on the stats and appearence of the mother,in most cases, but i believe we should have a bit more of an option here. How we look/or like our characters to look is important to probably 90-95% of us.

Sorry to have babbled on :)
