Why can't elitist and casuals get along!

Post » Wed Mar 26, 2014 8:47 am

Because elitists are skilled (or sometimes not) players who are jerks to anyone that isn't as good as them. That is what elitist means. They look down on people who aren't like them.

Now if you are talking about hardcoe players and casuals, that is a better question. Unfortunately most hardcoe players that stand out are the elitists, and so they give them all a bad name among casuals. And the most noticeable casuals are the ones who really svck, giving them a bad rep among hardcoes.

Kind of like how everyone complaining about a game gets heard, and gives the game a bad rep, while the much higher number of people who like it don't get heard so much. Probably because they are playing it instead of complaining.

Isn't as simple as the two groups don't see eye to eye on a playstyle and leave it at that?

I hope there is enough self moderation in game from both 'sides'

Elitist isn't so much a playstyle as an attitude.

I have no problems getting along with people that are 'hardcoe' about a game. Elitists are a completely different matter tho. Thankfully, not all hardcoe players are also elitist.

I'd say elitists tend to be more competitive and of course casuals generally aren't. Main difference is elitists think they're better than others whereas casuals couldn't care less.

I love playing with casual players in easy to moderate content because I feel like a boss around them and get satisfaction from the challenge of having to carry them through content.

In end-game hard content where little things make the difference between success and failure I will attempt hard stuff with crap.. er I mean 'casual' players for the challenge but I certainly won't beat my head against a wall trying to get them through it.

again, it doesnt matter because elitists dont group casuals, and elitists dont accept invites from casuals.

What about someone who's somewhere in the middle of casual and hardcoe or "elitist?" A gamer?

I would not consider myself elitist, but I fully agree with their point of view. Casuals should not have major influence on the game. It's like in racing, we can use the same track but amateurs have no influence on pro series until they are ready to enter pro series...

Saying that I'm not a basemant dwelling, I do spend lots of time playing games but also spend time on my sportsbikes (750cc and 1000cc) and keep myself in shape cycling 6 days a week 10 miles per day. Being fit keeps your mind fit too...

But what does the OP relate to really?

Who hurt you Darmonic?

Because human beings cant help but to discriminate and divide themselfs into "Class's" to make them feel better then others. I am a casual player and a long time MMO veteran. I have a wife 2 kids bills and a job so I play when i get some down time or when the wife and kids are asleep. I play how i want. The way I feel about is if you dont like how i play then dont play with me. In the end its just a game that is meant to have fun. Some people tend to get way more into then i do and want to find like minded people to play with. If you let a game effect your real life then you should not be playing the game. Games like these are my vacation from my job wife and kids lol.

They can, and do. It's the cases that don't get along that you see/hear about.

The extremist of both ends usually cause this. The same with any thread, post, topic - you only hear from the ppl that REALLY care one way or the other. The ppl in the middle don't bother to comment, so you always seemingly have extreme arguements going on.

i.e. "Implement duels!" and "Duels will ruin the game!"

Elitists look down on casuals because they don't understand how people can play a game simply to have fun.

Casuals look down on elitists because they don't understand how people can take a game so seriously that it affects their emotions and relationships in real life.

I am a casual.

Well, what's a "casual" and what's an "elitist"?

To mean, a "casual" is someone who is just looking to go through the motions to play a game, and progress accordingly.

An "elitist" is someone who simply thinks they are better than everyone else.

IMO, this do not accurately reflect many gamers. I consider myself to be a "limited playtime hardcoe" gamer. I am a hardcoe gamer through and through -- when I play a game, I jump in 100%. I want to learn everything about the game, in my spare time I am usually learning ways to get better; the only problem is I am 28 years old, have a wife, a career, and thus limited time to player.

Elitists cannot get along with casuals because elitists feel like the casuals are dragging them down and the casuals feel like the elitists are a buzz kill who cannot have fun.

both sides apparently take the game way too seriously. You should play to have fun. You should try to improve the experience for people around you. Happy players = good game. It's a matter of ethical hedonism really. Do what makes you happy, but don't ruin it for everyone else in the process.

Just a quick question...

What's the difference between an elitist and a "hardcoe" gamer ?

Communication is key. State what you are trying to achieve when forming a group. Then everyone can decide wether they want to pursue the endeavor in question under the laid out setting or not.

Group finders of any kind are no excuse of not communicating with each other. Let your pug know you are just a noob tank starting your first instance. Tell them you want to rush content, because you've beat it many times before.

People will find a reason to stick together or perfectly understand why it's better to split and search for others or a new group. Just talk! If nobody does, all are to blame.

Elitism is a bit juvenile. As others have pointed out, you can be hardcoe without being an insufferable jerk. OTOH you can be a casual without playing the game like you're wearing oven mitts.

Ignore the extremists. The great majority (who inhabit that large space between the extremes) unite!

I think some people here are confusing what casuals mean. I am casual and dont mind a hard game I just dont have alot of time to farm and have to split my time between real life and the game. When i get home i will run raids with my guild or a PuG doesnt matter to me as long as I have fun doing it. My dealings with Elitists have been, they would inspect my gear and check everything for instance if i was a NB they would look and see a stat that doesnt belong on a orange piece of gear for instance health, he would then try and correct me by calling me a noob and telling me to learn how to play. I dont mind a friend telling me advice but if i dont know you and your throwing insults thats when it crosses the line especially in a game i play to enjoy on my time off.

because an elitist as term implies is someone who considers themselves superior to everyone else aka the casuals

I like this question. It is kinda trolly in a way but it also brings up a very thought provoking subject. People assume Elitist means Creep who thinks they are better than everyone and casual means that they are baddies. In reality you can be a really good player who is super cool and helpful and you can be a casual player who plays when you have time but in is really super good, but can't commit to playing all the time due to real life time constraints. /breath What I am trying to say is the terms are misnomers. I think hardcoe and Casual may be a bit more accurate here because you can be a terrible player and have an elitist attitude and you can be a really skilled casual player.

Ultimately I think there is a place for both in an mmo. I also know they can successfully coexist. I have been in many guilds where casual members really enriched the guild environment and the hardcoe members helped the casuals become better players. It all boils down to the culture of a guild and even more so the gaming community as a whole. I like to think that we as a community welcome all play styles with open arms and stick to playing with people we enjoy playing with regardless of their play style.

In real life the jerks tend to hang out with other jerks so I don't expect to interact with them much in ESO either. ;)
